Cultural Note
“e-sports” or “electronic sports” are a form of competition using video games.Video games are popular across the world, with many professional players taking part in large and often international multiplayer competitions as individuals or as teams.
Their popularity has led to them being considered for the Olympics; they may be included as a demonstration sport at the 2024 Games in Paris.
However, many video games are too violent, and the International Olympic Committee has said these will never be included because they are not compatible with the values of the Olympics.
Perhaps, as their popularity continues to grow, video game versions of already popular Olympic sports, such as football or athletics, could be included in the future. Indeed, e-sports will appear at other sports events, such as the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
