Bridges have developed from simple wooden structures to artistic and engineering wonders. These four bridges reflect how engineering combines with art, illustrating bridges’ unchanging roles as both functional structures and cultural symbols.
Brooklyn Bridge, USA
Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. Despite dangerous construction conditions causing workers injured and sick, the bridge is now a much-known and much-loved feature of New York and can be seen in many television shows and movies, especially those sets in and around New York.
Undulating Bridge, China
This Mobius strip-inspired bridge stretches over Mei Xi Lake, featuring multi-level pathways that offer diverse routes for walkers to take as they cross the river. Amsterdam-based NEXT architect said, “It also refers to a Chinese knot that comes from an ancient decorative Chinese folk art.”
Charles Bridge, Czech Republic
The first stone of Charles Bridge, originally called the Stone Bridge, was laid by King Charles IV. A recent restoration saw the original statues being replaced with modern ones and the originals carefully removed to a museum for protection. Whenever you are in Prague, be sure to wander over the Charles Bridge and stare into the water of the Vltava River as you delight in the history of this historically significant bridge.
Gateshead Millennium Bridge, UK
This pedestrian and cyclist tilt (倾斜) bridge is an award-winning structure. It is the world’s first and only tilting bridge, which extends across the River Tyne, connecting Gateshead and Newcastle. Known as the “Blinking Eye Bridge” for its unique shape and its tilting method, it serves pedestrians and cyclists while allowing river traffic to pass.

It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years: by watching the Perseid meteor (流星) shower. But this year was different. At 23, I was away from my family for the first time, farther from where I grew up. I was starting my graduate degree in pharmacy (药学), and was driven to become a pharmacist like my best friend’s dad, one of the few professional role models available. I completed my bachelor’s degree at a university just down the road from my parents’ house and started at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
But now, watching the meteors across the black sky, I began to question that path. Could my lifelong love for astronomy be more than a pastime
Accidentally, another event helped me make a decision: a solar eclipse (日食), whose path of totality included the Blue Ridge Mountains where I grew up. I skipped class and made the trip along the winding mountain roads. Finally, the world around me became dark. The water was still, the birds were chaotic, and the sunset surrounded me. I knew what I had to do. I dropped out of pharmacy school to pursue previously unimagined options.
The next 4 years were some of the most challenging of my life. I worked various jobs: driving for Uber, hosting at restaurants, folding clothes at stores. I became a post-baccalaureate (学士后) student and spared an hour to attend classes every day. I got a job as a teaching assistant and conducted research. I eventually graduated with a second bachelor’s degree, in physics, and began a Ph.D. program in astronomy.
Now, about to start my final year of my Ph.D., I realize that my exposure to the night sky growing up gave me a great gift. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame, or self-doubt to stand in the way of going after new dreams.
4. Why did the author watch the meteor shower to celebrate her birthday
A. She missed her hometown. B. She aimed to be a role model.
C. She was crazy about astronomy. D. She followed her best friend’s dad
5. What was the author’s decision after watching the solar eclipse
A. She switched her major to physics. B. She chose a new pharmacy school.
C. She drove back to where she grew up. D. She settled down in the mountains.
6. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Warm-hearted and generous. B. Organized and modest.
C. Determined and hard-working. D. Humorous and talented.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. The impact of birthday celebrations.
B. The tough journey of self-discovery.
C. The devotion to astronomical research.
D. The intention of overcoming challenges.
C
While diving in the Mediterranean Sea, scientists noticed something curious: Every field season, groups of local fish called seabream would follow them around, stealing food intended as rewards for other fish in their experiments.
The seabream seemed to recognize the divers and even appeared to know which individual humans were most likely to be carrying food. So, a team, led by Maelan Tomasek, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, designed a study published in the journal Biology Letters.
In the first stage of the experiment, Katinka Soller spent 12 days training seabream to follow her around. At first, she wore bright red and fed the fish as she swam. But in repeated trials, she gradually shifted to wearing plainer. “Once I entered the water, it was a matter of seconds before I would see them swimming towards me, seemingly coming out of nowhere,” Soller says. But in the second stage, Tomasek joined Soller, wearing differently colored outfit. On the first day, the fish followed both Tomasek and Soller equally. But the fish slowly realized that Tomasek never fed them, and more of them started to follow Soller.
“This is a cool result, because it shows that fish were not simply following Soller out of habit or because other fish were there,” says Tomasek. “They were aware of both divers, learning that Soller produced the reward at the end of the swim.”
When the divers wore identical outfit, however, the fish were seemingly unable to tell them apart. The researchers say this is evidence that the fish were using visual signs, like the color of wetsuits, to differentiate between the scientists. Senior author Alex Jordan, a researcher of the team, says that humans underestimate the abilities of fish. “It really shows that we have strong misconceptions of fish capacity.”
Tomasek hopes the study could make humans reconsider the way they treat fish. “It’s very human to not want to care about them, but they can care about us; maybe it’s time that we can care about them, too,” he says to the Guardian.
8. Why did Maelan Tomasek conduct the study
A. To demonstrate seabream can steal food from divers.
B. To test the visual ability of seabream to obtain food.
C. To train seabream to follow divers around in the sea.
D. To prove whether seabream can recognize individuals.
9. How did the researchers get the result about the seabream’s behavior
A. By following and analyzing the swimming patterns.
B. By observing and recording the fish’s responses.
C. By carrying out a laboratory experiment.
D. By conducting different training courses.
10. What can we learn from Alex Jordan about fish
A. Their intelligence is inaccurately assumed.
B. Their visions depend on the changing colors.
C. They rely on visual signs to protect themselves.
D. They are incapable of learning from interactions.
11. Why does the author mention Tomasek’s words in the last paragraph
A. To summarize the findings.
B. To call for proper treatment of fish.
C. To describe the connection between fish and humans.
D. To provide scientific evidence about fish intelligence.

In a significant step forward for wearable health technology, researchers led by a team from the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBD) have developed an innovative electronic skin (E-Skin) capable of repairing itself within seconds after experiencing damage. This new technology has the potential to transform personal health monitoring systems across various fields.
The study, published in Science Advances, reveals that this novel E-Skin can recover over 80% of its functionality within just 10 seconds of being damaged — a remarkable improvement over existing technologies that typically require minutes or even hours to heal (愈合).
“This self-healing technology represents a primary shift in wearable electronics,” Yangzhi Zhu, an assistant professor at TIBI, said in a news statement. “By achieving healing time of just seconds rather than minutes or hours, we’ve overcome one of the major barriers to practical, everyday use of electronic skin devices.”
The advancements in the E-Skin include ultra-rapid self-healing capabilities, reliable performance under extreme conditions, integration with advanced artificial intelligence and highly accurate health monitoring systems. These features enable real-time monitoring of tiredness and muscle strength assessment with exceptional precision, making it highly attractive for a broad range of applications.
“What makes this breakthrough particularly exciting is its immediate practical implications,” added Ali Khademhosseini, the CEO of TIBI. “We’ve created a technology that not only survives daily wear and tear but continues to provide accurate health monitoring even in challenging conditions like underwater environments. This durability (耐用性) opens up entirely new possibilities for personal health monitoring.” This self-healing capability addresses a common limitation in current wearable technologies, which often fail when damaged and significantly hinder their practical application.
The research team envisions numerous applications for their technology, ranging from monitoring athletic performance to aiding in medical recovery and general health tracking, promising to make significant contributions to both sports and health care industries.

When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother painstakingly practiced my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head.
Finally my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a part of a narrator (叙述者) to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still upsetting, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with spots of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the dandelions. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it ” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”
Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and gave me a comforting smile.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. “The narrator’s part is every bit as important as the part of a princess.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role.

After the play, I rushed home and found my mother waiting for me by the dandelions.

【答案】Dear James,
How is everything going with you
I’m writing to share with you an activity I had in our Folk Museum last Saturday. We were taught to make traditional Chinese paper-cuttings in the activity. I created a beautiful red paper-cut of a dragon, which symbolizes good luck and strength in Chinese culture. The process was intricate but incredibly rewarding.
Not only did this experience deepen my appreciation for traditional crafts, but also it allowed me to connect with cultural heritage in a hands-on way. I felt a great sense of accomplishment upon completing my artwork.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. My mother helped me practice my narration with the same care she had once used for the princess lines. She reminded me that the narrator guides the whole story and helps everyone understand the play better. At first, I still felt disappointed, but as I rehearsed more, I began to enjoy the rhythm of the words and the way my voice could bring the story to life. My teacher was impressed with my improvement and even praised my clear and emotional delivery. On the day of the play, I stood behind the curtain, heart pounding, but not with fear — this time, I was excited. When the lights came on and my voice filled the hall, I knew I had found my place in the story.
