NeSmith and Maxwell are long-time residents of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and they have known each other for almost 50 years. In 2021. Maxwell called NeSmith to let him know that because of health problems, he would be closing his weekly newspaper, The Oglethorpe Echo. NeSmith decided to prevent the nearly 150-year-old local newspaper from being forgotten.
NeSmith remembered waking up at 6 a. m. after that phone call. He jumped into his truck and drove to The Echo offices. Upon arriving, he suggested that his friend think of a new solution.
“Well, what are we going to do ” Maxwell asked him. “Are you going to buy the newspaper ” NeSmith looked up, searching for an answer. Then, a sudden idea hit him.
He would create an organization and Maxwell would donate The Echo to it. After leaving the office, NeSmith called Charles Davis, director of the University of Georgia's Grady College.
“I’ve got an idea,” NeSmith told him. “I want to turn The Echo into a real-life experience for students at Grady College who want to be reporters.” Davis loved the idea, and he and NeSmith developed a course with The Echo as its foundation. Students could experience a working newsroom which would act as a stepping stone into their careers.
Of course, they needed someone to run the newspaper. Then Andy Johnston, who had been teaching at Grady for a month, appeared. “I believe in the project. We’ve heard about other newspapers closing, especially in rural counties,” Johnston said. “When that happens, it means their only source of news and the only thing that holds people together is closing.”
Johnston teamed up with Amanda Bright, who taught the course. Bright, a community reporter, helped create new digital platforms for The Echo, including an email newsletter (简讯) and a website.
The Echo also ran on a team of 12 volunteers that worked at the main office. The reason why The Echo was able to continue is that everyone worked together—the students, Grady College, NeSmith, Maxwell, and the residents of Oglethorpe County.

In 1973, when Melissa Greene was in 6th grade, her parents bought the first flat on Hutchinson Island. The first time she ran down to the wild shore, she was shocked by the contrast to their earlier beach trips to Daytona, a people-packed spectacle of cars. On Hutchinson, the spectacle was the seashells (海贝). Today, on the same stretch of beach, she rarely finds large whole shells.
Among the most amazing natural objects, seashells represent both the surprise and wonder still promised by a trip to the beach—and the major changes underway on our coasts.
Many of the largest and best-known marine mollusks (海洋软体动物)—the animal architects that build seashells—have declined under fishing pressure. They are also harmed by rising ocean temperatures, and by pollution and runoff from the land. And they can be displaced by the severe erosion (侵蚀) caused by inlets—a growing problem on Hutchinson Island—as well as efforts to repair eroded beaches by recovering lost sand.
Twenty-five. years ago, Sanibel Island became the first city in the U. S. to ban “live shelling”, the practice of collecting and killing mollusks for their shells. The move to protect the individual lives of soft-bodied mollusks seems almost strange given ocean warming and other “tough realities of the changing world,” acknowledges Jose H. Leal, science director at Sanibel’s Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum.
But helping beach goers appreciate the animals inside the shell as much as the shiny exterior turns out to be a crucial step toward helping them understand what's happening in the sea, Leal says. “If people understand the complexity of these animals and their importance, they will also realize the need to protect marine environments.”
Delaware Seashore State Park is taking so-called low-impact beach combing (赶海) a step further: asking visitors to leave empty shells alone, too. At the park, signs advise visitors to leave shells where they lie or take a photo of a marine creature in the sand. After all, the point of enjoying nature is that it is in a natural state.
28. What impressed Melissa Greene on Hutchinson Island when she was young
A. The flats. B. The tourists. C. The seashells. D. The cars.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The efforts made to save marine mollusks.
B. The changes seashells have experienced.
C. The dangers marine mollusks face.
D. The current situation of Hutchinson Island.
30. What does José H. Leal think of banning “live shelling”
A. It slows down ocean warming.
B. It raises people’s awareness of ocean protection.
C. It popularizes the collecting of seashells.
D. It keeps people away from beaches.
31. What is the purpose of Delaware Seashore State Park’s advice
A. To provide habitat for small creatures. B. To preserve the natural state of the beach.
C. To attract marine creatures to the beach. D. To protect visitors from being harmed.

One year ago, in an art competition at the Colorado State Fair in the United States, an artwork created with help from artificial intelligence(AI) called “Thé tre D’opéra Spatial” won the first prize in the digital art category and sparked discussions online. Now, officials with the 151-year-old fair have revised the contest’s rules: Artists must claim whether they used AI to make their entries, reports the Denver Post’s John Wenzel.
The saga (事件) began last August, when game designer Jason Allen won the top spot in the fair’s digital arts competition. When he shared his victory online, he mentioned that he’d used Midjourney—an AI program that turns text into images—to help create his piece, titled “Théātre D’opéra Spatial”.
Allen maintained he was open about using Al from the beginning, though the judges said they didn’t know until after the fact. Either way, claim wasn't necessary at the time, meaning Allen never broke any rules.
His victory was controversial (有争议的)—and now, as a result, officials have decided to tweak the submission requirements. At this year’s fair, which took place in Pueblo between August 26 and September 4, artists needed to “tell if art or artwork was created using an Artificial Intelligence Generator,” according to this year’s requirements.
Allen wasn’t happy about the new requirement, telling the Denver Post that it was essentially a “discriminatory mark” against AI artworks. Despite the change, he decided to submit once again to the digital arts category.
The fair’s leaders say they plan to continue adapting as technology advances. As Scott Stoller, the fair’s general manager, tells the Denver Post, the digital arts category itself has only been around for a few decades. In the future, officials may even decide to add a separate AI category, depending on how popular tools like Midjourney become.
“That’s the beauty of art—that it’s always evolving,” says Stoller. “Art can be anything, and anything can be made into art.”
32. What can be learnt about Jason Allen
A. He won first place in an art competition. B. He revised the rules of an arts contest.
C. He developed an AI program. D. He was the leader of the Colorado State Fair.
33. What does the underlined word “tweak” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Select. B. Create. C. Continue. D. Revise.
34. What can be inferred from the text
A. Allen broke the art competition rules.
B. Thé tre D’opéra Spatial was completely created by AI.
C. Artists can’t use AI to make their entries.
D. Some people thought Allen deserved the victory.
35. What’s Stoller’s attitude towards the AI artworks
A. Approving. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned.

Thirteen-year-old Ethan wasn’t like most kids of his age. While others played video games or hung out with friends after school, Ethan spent his afternoons running a small lemonade (柠檬水) stand near the park where he lived with his mother.
Ethan’s mother worked hard, doing multiple jobs just to keep a roof over their heads. Their trailer (拖车) was old and worn, and while it provided shelter, Ethan dreamed of earning enough money to pay for his college tuition. He knew that getting a good education was the key to a bright future, and he was determined to attend college one day.
One hot summer afternoon, while Ethan was manning his lemonade stand, a man in a black car pulled up. Dressed in a sharp suit, he stepped out and walked over to the stand. He seemed out of place in the run-down neighborhood, but his warm smile put Ethan at ease.
“Hot day,” the man said, reaching for his wallet. “I’ll take a lemonade.”
“Sure thing,” Ethan replied, pouring a glass with his usual care.
As the man drank the lemonade, he watched Ethan closely. “You’re quite the businessman,” the man commented. “How long have you been running this stand ”
“About a year,” Ethan answered. “I’m saving up to pay for my college tuition one day.”
The man was curious. “That’s an admirable goal for someone of your age. Tell me more.”
Ethan hesitated for a moment, but something about the man’s kind behavior encouraged him to share. He told the man about his life, the struggles his mother faced, and his dream of earning money for college.
When Ethan finished, the man reached into his wallet and handed Ethan a hundred-dollar bill. “Consider this an investment in your future.”
Ethan’s eyes widened in shock. “I… I can’t take that.”
“Sure you can,” the man insisted. “And that’s not all. I work for a big company, and we often need refreshments for our meetings. I think your lemonade could be a great addition. I’ll help you supply our company with lemonade, and you can make good money from it.”

The man wasn’t just making empty promises. He kept his word and ordered 100 cups of lemonade every Friday for his company’s meetings. To help Ethan manage, he even lent him a small cart to transport the drinks. Ethan worked tirelessly, waking up at 5 a.m. to squeeze fresh lemons and deliver on time. His mother often joined him, and together they turned the trailer’s small kitchen into a mini factory. With the extra money, Ethan bought a second-hand laptop for online courses, determined to improve his grades.
Years passed, and Ethan’s hard work paid off. He graduated from college with honors and got a job at a famous beverage company. One day, he visited his old neighborhood and saw a new lemonade stand run by a young girl. Smiling, he walked over and handed her a hundred-dollar bill, just like the man had done for him. “Invest in your future,” he said. As he left, he knew the man’s kindness had not only changed his life but would continue to inspire others.
范文二
The man wasn’t just making empty promises. He explained that his company had a meeting schedule every Tuesday and Thursday, and he promised to bring Ethan’s lemonade to those gatherings. To Ethan’s surprise, the man returned the next day with a small notebook, writing down suggestions: “Add a bit more sugar for summer heat” and “Use fresh lemons for better taste.” Ethan followed every tip carefully. Soon, the company’s employees started asking for his lemonade, and even some neighbors joined the queue. The man also helped Ethan design a simple sign to advertise the lemonade, which brought more customers. “You’re not just selling drinks,” he said. “You’re building trust with people.”
Years passed, and Ethan’s hard work paid off. By his senior year in high school, he had not only saved enough for college but also earned a scholarship for his leadership in community projects. His mother, now working at a cleaner job, no longer worried about rent. At the university, Ethan majored in business, inspired by his early experience. “That man saw my dream before I did,” he told his classmates. “He taught me that success starts with believing in yourself and sometimes, with a stranger who chooses to believe in you.”
