When Maggie was a very young girl, she loved looking up at the stars in the sky, and she loved a British television stop-animation(定格动画)series about mousy-looking beings from another planet called The Clangers. It’s debatable as to which inspired her dream of becoming a space scientist more, but one thing is for sure: The passion Maggie had for space sparked a career and helped her overcome her dyslexia(读写困难).
The now celebrated space scientist, mechanical engineer, and science communicator grew up bouncing from one area of the country to another, the child of two Nigerian immigrants who divorced when she was young. Diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of eight, Maggie faced enormous challenges in traditional learning environments. Dyslexia often made reading and writing difficult, and she was sometimes looked down upon by classmates. Despite these obstacles, her passion for science and space exploration shone through. Rather than focusing on the limitations dyslexia imposed, Maggie discovered its advantages: Her brain was good at visualization and problem-solving, enabling her to think creatively and approach challenges from unique perspectives.
Her journey to success wasn’t easy. After overcoming early academic struggles, she went on to earn degrees in physics and mechanical engineering. Today, she is well-known for her work in space science, including the development of satellites and instruments used to explore the universe. Her contributions to science are widely recognized, and she has become an inspiring role model for young people, particularly those facing learning difficulties.
Her story is a powerful reminder that dyslexia is not a limitation but a different way of processing the world, one that can lead to extraordinary achievements. Maggie’s life and career prove that facing what makes you different can turn challenges into strengths, inspiring others to see the potential in their own unique abilities.
4. What can we learn about Maggie from paragraph 1
A. She was born with a talent for space science.
B. Her dyslexia prevented her from achieving her dream.
C. Her passion for space promoted her career development.
D. The Clangers was the only factor that inspired her dream.
5. Which statement best describes Maggie’s early learning experience
A. Her classmates willingly backed her through her dyslexia challenges.
B. She excelled in traditional learning environments despite her dyslexia.
C. She faced significant difficulties in reading and writing due to dyslexia.
D. Her parents quickly resolved her dyslexia-related issues after diagnosis.
6. What did Maggie’s achievements in science mainly owe to
A. Her natural talent in physics and engineering.
B. Her focus on traditional academic success paths.
C. Her early support from family in choosing a career.
D. Her determination to overcome early academic challenges.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To highlight the importance of space exploration.
B. To encourage people to face difficulties bravely.
C. To discuss the disadvantages of dyslexia.
D. To present a scientist’s research.

In a recent groundbreaking study, WWF and MIX Research introduced a novel method to collect and analyze environmental DNA (eDNA)from snow tracks of polar bears and snow leopards (豹). This innovative approach enriches the conservation toolkit (工具箱) with a new tool to protect these species and their remote habitats.
Their cooperation focused on getting eDNA from polar bears’ footprints, providing a method to study wildlife in a non-contact way. By analyzing smallest eDNA traces from bear tracks in Alaska’s snow, the team achieved a significant milestone. In Sweden’s MIX Research lab, they successfully isolated and ordered nuclear eDNA, genetically analyzing individual bears. Dr. Melanie Lancaster, MIX Research’s lead researcher, describes the work as being a “DNA detective”, obtaining information from footprints.
Unlike usual methods requiring close interaction with bears, eDNA collection gathers vital data without disturbing them. This opens opportunities for local communities, volunteers, and non-scientists to participate in monitoring and managing polar bears and other snow-tracking species.
This method marks a significant step forward in wildlife conservation, equipping researchers with a new tool to increase existing ones for gathering information about polar bear populations. These iconic animals face threats due to the climate crisis, which is melting their sea ice habitat. Understanding their movements, genetic interactions, and behavior is of greatest importance for their conservation and management.
Dr. Melanie Lancaster said “We’re delighted with the results of this cooperation and pleased to add a new tool to the conservation toolbox for polar bears and snow leopards. There is still much we do not know about other snow-living species across the Arctic, which is worrying, given current and predicted impacts of the climate crisis on their habitats and populations. We need all the help we can get to collectively ensure their conservation in the long run.”
8. What may the new method be able to do
A. Record polar bears’ behavior. B. Find genes from snow tracks.
C. Analyze the snowfall in Alaska. D. Monitor the habitats of wildlife.
9. What advantage does the new method have over usual methods
A. It analyzes bears’ population. B. It contributes to vital data storage.
C. It gets information without contact. D. It helps people get close to animals.
10. What does Dr. Melanie Lancaster expect of the eDNA collection
A. It’ll predict polar bears’ number. B. It might help solve climate crisis.
C. It could speed up tech upgrading. D. It may expand to more animal species.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Help Wildlife by Following Footprints B. A Big Step: Protect Wildlife Remotely
C. The Innovative Era: How to Use eDNA D. Gene Analysis Betters Animal Research
D
The French author Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin once wrote “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” Put more simply, this means “You are what you eat.” Most people today relate this saying to healthy eating. However, Brillat-Savarin was actually referring to our personality, character and culture.
Certainly, in many ways this seems to be true. America’s most popular Chinese dish is General Tso’s chicken, which consists of fried chicken covered in a sweet sauce, favored with hot red peppers. This is probably not a genuine Chinese recipe, however, so it cannot tell us much about the Chinese. On the other hand, it does tell us a lot about Americans. It tells us, for example, that Americans love bold, simple flavor. And since the dish was also invented recently, it tells us that Americans are not afraid to try new foods.
Later, I had a chance to experience authentic Chinese food by coming to China. A Sichuan restaurant had been recommended to us by a friend. We had no idea how to order, so the chef just began filling our table with the best food we had ever eaten. With this, we had the gaiety of experiencing an entirely new taste: Sichuan peppercorns. The food was wonderful and different, but what was even more important was the friendship offered to us.
We soon moved to Shandong Province in the eastern part of North China. My favorite dish there was boiled dumplings served with vinegar. I observed that family is important to the people there. It has become a favorite traditional dish of the people in North China, where making dumplings has always been a family affair with everyone — from the youngest to the oldest — joining in to help. Later, I learned that another famous food in Shandong is pancake rolls stuffed with sliced Chinese green onions.
12. Which of the following can we learn about Americans from General Tso’s chicken
A. They prefer complicated flavors. B. They dislike sweet and spicy food.
C. They are open to new food experiences. D. They stick to traditional Chinese recipes.
13. What does the underlined word “gaiety” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Pleasure. B. Regret. C. Calmness. D. Embarrassment.
14. In Shandong Province, what is special about making dumplings
A. It is only for special festivals.
B. It is usually done by professional chefs.
C. Only the elderly are allowed to make them.
D. It is a family activity that everyone participates in.
15. What is the text mainly focused on
A. Tasty Chinese cuisines.
B. Food reflecting culture.
C. The author’s travel experiences in China.
D. The difference between Chinese food and American food.

My heart raced as I stared at the broken string on my guitar. The old instrument lay on my bed, its wooden body shining in the soft afternoon light. But I couldn’t focus on its beauty. All I could think about was how Grandpa would react when he found out.
The guitar wasn’t just any instrument; it was a precious gift from Grandpa, passed down to me on my sixteenth birthday. He had played it for decades, filling our home with warm melodies (旋律). When he handed it to me, he said, “This guitar has been with me through ups and downs. Now it’s your turn to make memories with it.” I was so excited.
I was a member in a band at school, and the guitar quickly became my most treasured possession. However, during our last practice, things had gone terribly wrong. I had played too hard during a fast-paced song, and the old strings couldn’t take it. One string broke, causing the bridge to lift slightly from the body. My friends had tried to comfort me, saying it was just an accident and that the guitar could be repaired. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I would let Grandpa down.
For the next few days, I felt anxious. I didn’t want to face Grandpa, knowing how much the guitar meant to him. But I couldn’t avoid it forever. Grandpa was coming to visit that weekend, and I wondered: should I confess (坦白) or try to hide the damage
The day of the visit came, and I felt like there was a heavy rock on my chest. Grandpa arrived, full of smiles and stories as usual. We spent the afternoon talking about everything except the guitar. My anxiety grew with each passing minute.
Finally, Grandpa advised, “Kid, why don’t you play something for me I’ve missed hearing you play.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Dear Jerry,
I’m glad to hear that you want to participate in the speech contest! Since the theme is about happy high school life, I suggest you share your unique experiences as an exchange student. You could talk about cultural differences, fun moments with classmates, or how you’ve adapted to life here. Adding humor or personal stories will make your speech more engaging.
Also, practice speaking clearly and confidently. If you need help, I’d be happy to listen and give feedback.
Wish you great success in the competition!
Yours,
Li Hua

【57题答案】
【答案】I panicked, realizing that I truly had to make a decision. For a moment, I considered lying and saying the guitar was in the shop for some adjustments. But looking into Grandpa’s kind eyes, I knew I couldn’t deceive him. With a deep breath, I walked over to the guitar, picked it up gently, and showed him the broken string and the lifted bridge. My voice trembled as I explained, “Grandpa, I’m so sorry. I accidentally broke it during a fast-paced song. I was playing too hard and the old strings couldn’t take it.” I droped my head, waiting for his disappointment and blame.
To my surprise, Grandpa didn’t blame me. Instead, he smiled warmly and patted me on the shoulder. “Accidents happen, kid,” he comforted me, “and this guitar is too old. What matters is that you’re using it to create music and memories, just like I hoped.” Then, he took the guitar and examined it carefully. “We can fix this together,” he suggested. That afternoon, we went to a local music store, bought new strings and glue, and spent hours repairing the guitar. As we worked side by side, I listened to more of his stories about the guitar, warmed by Grandpa’s love and the bond between us.
