When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon(煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor(风味)to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week's meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by me, my boys, my husband, or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a meal. Each moment that you don't live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.
5. The writer's grandma used the leftover potatoes to__________.
A. mix with noodles B. fry some eggs
C. fry bacon D. make soup
6. Who ate leftovers in the writer's family in order not to waste every meal
① Her children ② Her husband ③ Herself ④ Her grandpa
A. ①②④ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ①②③
7. How did the writer save food according to the passage
A. By shopping more B. By throwing it away.
C. By following her mother's advice D. By planning the next week's food.
8. What can we learn from the passage
A. Small actions can make a big difference B. No pains, no gains.
C. Neither food nor life should be wasted D. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

A recent study says volunteering can be good for health. Maybe it could help with some problems the youth are facing these days. The new study found that volunteering through school or other groups is connected with better health among children and teens.
The study found kids who took part in voluntary work were 34% more likely to be in very good physical health than those who didn't. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered to do well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have pressure than those who didn't. The findings come from information provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged between 6 and 17. About half of those parents reported that their kids did voluntary work.
The result of the study comes at an important time for youth health. In recent years, more and more young people suffer(遭受)from pressure. More than 40% of high school students are reported to experience sadness or hopelessness in 2024. So there's a clear need for convenient and useful methods of solving this problem. Giving back to society may be one choice. And this study isn't the only one to reach that conclusion.
However, the study like this has virtues, but it has other problems too. For example, parents answered questions about their kids' health and voluntary activities. But parents might not know if their children have pressure or consider themselves to be doing well.
Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren't just helping others. They might also be helping themselves.
9. What can we learn from the numbers in Paragraph 2
A. 34% of kids are in good physical health.
B. Doing voluntary work is good for kids.
C. Parents don't allow kids to do voluntary work.
D. Kids aged between 6 and 17 like doing voluntary work best.
10. How did over 40% of high school students feel in 2024
A. They felt angry easily. B. They often felt nervous.
C. They felt sad and hopeless. D. They felt relaxed about time.
11. What does the underlined word "virtues" mean in Paragraph 4
A. Goodness. B. Risks. C. Choices. D. Decisions.
12. What can be the best title of this passage
A. Help Others, Help Oneself B. Choices for Voluntary Work
C. Voluntary Work Improves Kids' Health D. Healthy People Do More Volunteering
D
Many people believe that goldfish only have a seven-second memory, but Roy Stokes, a 15-year-old schoolboy from Australian Science and Mathematics School has just finished an experiment to tell us that it is not true. He shows everybody that goldfish are smarter than we think.
"I don't believe that they have a seven-second memory because animals need their memories, so they can know where the food is," he said. He did the experiment in a small box of goldfish. "I decided to get a red mark and just feed them next to the mark. Every day I put it in and dropped food around it," he said.
"At first they were a bit afraid of it, but by the end of the three weeks, they were actually almost coming before I put the food in." After leaving the goldfish alone for a week, Roy put the red mark in the box again.
"They remembered perfectly well," he said. "They actually had a time faster than the three feeds before I left."
The goldfish showed that they not only could store information, but also had the ability to get it back at a later date.
Colum Brown, a researcher at Macquarie University in Sydney, has studied fish behavior for more than ten years. He says his studies show that fish are smart and that they know how to avoid enemies (躲避敌人)and catch food like any other animal. D. goldfish are smarter than we think

In recent years, robots have started working in restaurants. Some restaurants use robots to cook food, serve customers, and even clean tables. Should robots take the place of human workers in restaurants Let's take a look at its pros and cons(利弊).
One major advantage(优点)of using robots in restaurants is that robots can work fast and do not need breaks. They can prepare food and serve customers quickly, cutting down waiting time. Another advantage is cost-saving. Robots do not require salaries(薪水)like human workers. Also, robots make fewer mistakes than humans. This improves service quality.
However, there are also disadvantages(缺点). First, robots cannot understand customers' feelings or communicate with them warmly. This may make the dining experience less enjoyable. Second, if a robot breaks down, the restaurant may have trouble serving customers. Lastly, using robots might take away jobs from people which will lead to unemployment(失业).
All in all, using robots to work in restaurants has both advantages and disadvantages.

Be a better me
How to be a better me I believe bravery, confidence, and hard work can make me grow better.
Here is an experience that helped me grow up. When I was 13 years old, my class chose me to take part in the school speech competition. I was so nervous that I wanted to give up. However, with the encouragement of my teacher and my classmates, I decided to face the challenge and worked hard to prepare for it. During the preparation, I became more confident than before, and also was able to express my thoughts clearly. Finally, I spoke confidently and won the third prize!
This experience taught me that bravery, confidence and hard work leads to growth. Now I believe challenges help us become better. I’m proud of my progress and will keep trying new things to become a better me.
