定语从句(3) “介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句
一、 关系代词的确定
“介词+关系代词”既可以引导限制性定语从句,也可以引导非限制性定语从句。在此结构中,先行词指人时关系代词用whom,不可以用who或that;先行词指物时关系代词用which,不可以用that。但如果介词后置,则不受这种限制,限制性定语从句中的关系代词还可以省去,尤其是在口语中。
二、介词的选取
(3)The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is close to 6,400 kilometres in length—roughly 100 kilometres longer than the Yangtze River.
亚马孙河是这片热带雨林名字的由来,全长约6 400千米——约比长江长100千米。
1.“介词+关系代词”中介词的选取主要看以下三方面:
(1)根据定语从句修饰先行词的习惯来确定介词;
(2)根据定语从句中某些词或短语的习惯搭配来确定介词;
(3)根据上下文要表达的具体意思来确定介词。
2.当定语从句中的动词短语含有不可拆分的介词时,该介词不能放在关系代词前面。常见的这类动词短语有look at、 look into、 listen to、 hear from、 look after、 break into等。
三、“介词+关系代词”的特殊用法
(4)Look at the building, the roof of which(= whose roof) is white.
看那座建筑, 它的屋顶是白色的。
(5)There are two buildings, the larger of which stands nearly a hundred feet high.
这里有两座建筑物,较大的那座几乎有100英尺高。
1.the way作先行词,后接定语从句时,若关系词在从句中作状语,则用in which/that,可省略。
2.“代词(all/each/one/many/much/some/none/both)/数词+of+which/whom”通常在定语从句中作主语,说明整体中的一部分。
3.“介词+which”在定语从句中,可作时间、地点和原因状语,代替相应的关系副词when、where和why。
4.“the+名词+of+which/whom”引导定语从句时,of which/whom充当定语,修饰前面的名词,整个结构相当于“whose+名词”引导的定语从句。
5.“the+形容词比较级/最高级+of+which/whom”引导非限制性定语从句。
