Have you wondered how long would the trip from Amsterdam to Shanghai take by bike Ole Bouman, a Dutch-German historian, writer and photographer and now a professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, has the answer—156 days.
This journey wasn’t a whim. It was a long-held idea that became increasingly clear and defined as Bouman started making physical, mental, and financial preparations, “I’ve had the strong curiosity to learn more about the East since the 1990s. As a cultural historian, I would like to know more about the relationship and interconnection between the East and the West,” said Bourman.
Setting off from Amsterdam, Bouman faced unexpected challenges and deep thinking. Every day, he rode toward different destinations. A 45-kilogram bag and an 18-kilogram bike were all that carried him on the 10,756-kilometer journey through 18 countries and regions with 16 different languages, as well as more than 500 historical sites. Along the way, he crossed about 300 rivers, climbed over 100 mountains, and tried to find a road that was not so smooth to gain new experiences, mapping an adventure filled with discoveries about people, cultures, stories, understanding, and connection.
Cycling from the West to the East and recording thousands of memorable moments, Bouman became more certain that his journey was more about the common ground we shared—the peace—rather than the differences. “From the West to the East, there are big changes in cultures, landscapes, literature, etc. But while pursuing (追求) changes and interacting with ordinary people, I become aware that people are pursuing a similar kind of normal life and personal happiness.”
Bouman has lived in China for around 10 years since he cycled to Shanghai and has been attracted by the whole history behind the new world. Now he is the founding director of the Design Society, a cultural exchange platform, whose goal is to push the young generation to kick off their own journey and encourage them to get close to the truth and reality by making physical efforts.

26. Which of the following can best describe Bouman
A. Honest and brave. B. Generous and humorous.
C. Curious and adventurous. D. Creative and imaginative.

As the new year approaches, crowds around the world may expect colorful fireworks to light up the sky with bright flashes and loud booms. However, the attraction of fireworks could fade away with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows.
Ollie Howitt, a leader of one of the world’s leading drone light show companies, which used a team of 300 drones to put on a display for London’s new year celebration last year, said that demand for drone shows had increased greatly. “We do believe these shows will gain wider popularity, instead of just being a short-lived kind of fashion. Drones are reusable and leave no harmful waste after use. In that sense, they become a good and eco-friendly choice,” she explained.
But not everyone agrees. A spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association warned that drones could also cause environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less impact on the environment, but we have serious concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium batteries (锂电池) which are known not to be all that green,” they said.
An RSPCA spokesperson also mentioned that while drones were a possible idea to try to reduce the impact of displays on animals, there were problems. Drones are not without their own negative issues such as scaring horses or crashing into birds, and may bother animals and members of the public. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider their possible effects and take proper measures to reduce the chance of accidents.
Some express the opinion that fireworks and drones don’t exclude each other. The sight, sound and gunpowder smell of fireworks will always provide its own unique thrill.
“We find fireworks work really well when teamed up with drones. But we don’t really see it as a one-replacing-the-other at all. We feel as if it’s just another tool for how you enliven the sky and what you want to do with the show you’re putting on,” said Howitt, noting that while fireworks give a loud, emotive and big performance, drones offer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of images.
28. What does Howitt think a drone display in paragraph 2
A. It’s definitely an upward trend. B. It’ll get us to reflect on energy crisis.
C. It’s a short-term fashion. D. It’ll excite the public curiosity about science.
29. Which of the following is not the problem of using drones for light shows compared with fireworks
A. Using high electricity. B. Causing trouble to the public.
C. Worsening environmental problems. D. Bothering animals like horses and birds.
30. Which of the following may Howitt suggest according to the last paragraph
A. Promoting the production of drones. B. Diversifying the functions of drones.
C. Limiting the displays of fireworks. D. Staging drone shows as another choice.
31. In which part of a website can we read this text
A. Health. B. Business. C. Environment. D. Advertisement.

We are what we eat. From high-calorie meals to low-fat lunches, much of our health depends on what we eat. We know about the benefits of eating properly for our physical well-being, but cooking food is turning out to be good for our mental well-being as well.
Some people are now thinking highly of the treatment value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through. Dr. Mark Salter, a famous doctor, said, “Baking and cooking are good therapies (疗法) that help patients develop planning skills, short-term memory and social skills-all of which suffer in mental illness.”
TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of the TV show, The Great British Bake Off. She says that “Baking’s always been about therapy. It produces something tangible. Unlike something abstract (抽象的), you can touch and enjoy it! Besides, your creations taste delicious and make you feel good. It is a process that really increase your level of life satisfaction.
Certainly, creating some delicious food has helped some of us get through the recent lockdown (禁闭); it’s helped take our mind off things and given us something to do. People have said that kneading dough (面团) to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control. Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel happier.
Nicole Farmer, who studies how food influences our biology, behavior and mental health, said that baking is an important tool for our socialization and mental health. She thinks that cooking gives you the opportunity to cook for others, in turn, providing the opportunity to improve and build relationships. It is a rewarding experience.
Hopefully, as we start to mix with friends and family again, we can enjoy the benefits once more and put us all in the right state of mind.
32. Why does the author mention Salter’s words in the second paragraph
A. To support his idea. B. To explain a medical term.
C. To warn us about mental illness. D. To show his admiration for Salter.
33. Why did people feel calm and in control when kneading dough
A. It helped them forget their worries. B. It required careful planning skills.
C. It produced delicious food to enjoy. D. It gave them a sense of pride.

A. It is a useful survival skill. B. It is a vital tool for a balanced diet.
C. It strengthens connections with others. D. It provides equal chances for all cooks.
