Reading and Thinking
Appreciate different
forms of English poems
Let’s enjoy the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. :what emotion or feeling do you think the poet wanted to convey P94
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.
-Robert Frost
“two roads” in the poem do not mean actual roads in the woods, but two choices in the poet’s life. He feels he has made a different and decisive choice.
The poem is written by the American poet,Robert Frost (1874-1963). He uses the image of a split path in a wood to talk about choices in life. Frost wrote the poem after a trait of his friend and fellow poet, Edward Thomas. When they walked together,Thomas would express regret about the path they hadn’t taken , and what they may have missed. He regretted what may have been a “better”path, but Frost mocked him for it and wrote the poem as somewhat of a joke. Despite this funny story, the poem has a deeper meaning. As Frost once said,“I’m never more serious than when joking .”
Something about the poem and the poet.

Let’s guess!
Guess Chinese poems according to the English translation
A bed, I see a silver light,
I wonder if it’s frost aground.
Looking up, I find the moon bright;
Bowing, in homesickness I’m drowned.
I look for her in vain.
When all at once I turn my head,
I find her there where lantern light is dimly shed.

This morn of spring in bed I’m lying,
Not wake up till I hear birds crying.
After on night of wind and showers,
How many are the fallen flowers!
Very quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came here;
Quietly I wave good-bye
To the rosy clouds in the western sky.
正如我轻轻的来;
How long will the bright moon appear
Wine-cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of year,
It would be tonight in the palace on high.
I seek but seek in vain,
I search and search again;
I feel so sad, so drear,
so lonely, without cheer.
If you would ask me how my sorrow has increased,
Just see the over-brimming river flowing east!
The furthest distance in the world
is not the way from birth to the end.
It is when I stand in front of you
but you don’t understand I love you.

Your British friend Tom wants to learn poems, please write a short passage:
Your favorite form of poems.
Reasons
Try to use attributive clauses.
Dear Tom,
Having known that you have a passion for poems, I can't resist my inner excitement, writing to you to tell you something about my favorite form of poems.
What I am into most is the Tang poetry. As the saying goes, "painting is silent poetry, and poetry is a speaking picture". It is also true of the Tang poetry. I am fully attracted by the picture the poems are painting. Besides, the Tang poetry is so well structured that it almost has the same words in each line, which is easy to learn with its rhymes.
If exposed to the Tang poetry, you are bound to fall in love with it immediately. And hope we have the chance to learn together.
Yours,
Lihua
Thank you!
