Try one or more of these plant experiments for fun and learning.*Color carnations (康乃馨)Fill a glass with water and color the water. Add a white carnation stalk (茎) and watch the plant become colorful as it “drinks” the colored water. This is a great, short experiment to show how plants take in water.*Plant root vegetablesFind out how root vegetables form underground by planting them in a clear container. First, fill the bottom of the container with small stones. Next, add potting soil and plant rot vegetable seeds, trying carrots or onions, evenly. Keep the soil wet and enjoy watching the rot form. Best of all, when the vegetable is done growing, you can eat it!*Study speedy sunflowersSunflower seeds sprout (发芽) and grow quickly, making this the perfect flower for impatient children. These seeds can be started just about anywhere, even in a paper coffee cup or yogurt container. Kids love seeing the plant push its way out of the soil, wearing the seed’s outer part like a hat! Move your plant to a flower pot after it sprouts to observe the lower as it forms.*Make a grass basketGrass is another seed that grows quickly. Make a living basket by lining a basket with plastic and filling it with potting soil Put grass seeds on top and water them lightly every day.Growing plants is a great way to bring some leaning—and a little sunshine—to your daily life. Try any of these inexpensive garden experiments for a fun project this spring.1. Which garden experiment will you choose to see how plants “drink” water A. Color carnations. B. Make a grass basket.C. Plant root vegetables. D. Study speedy sunflowers.2. What is special about the experiment of “Plant root vegetables” A. It has strict requirements for temperature. B. It offers you the tasty fruits of your labor.C. It is prefect for impatient kids. D. It is boring to carry on.3. What do sunflowers and grass have in common A. They both need little water. B. They both welcome sunshine.C. They both prefer clear containers. D. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain $150. My best friends Trevor, Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad. For a group of 20-year-olds, this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning, our 22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin. Eyes baggy from lack of sleep, we jumped on board as if it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to 3, 000 kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise. The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night, we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it, the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise, a sea of golden grain fields dominated the landscape we were in the Canadian Prairies.Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome (圆顶状物). And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm. Lightning was striking at an incredible rate. The spectacular and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Before the train adventure, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. That is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.4. What has made the author’s train adventure across Canada a reality A. The encouragement given by his mother.B. The discount ticket offered by Via Rail Canada.C. The appeal of the scenic views in the country.D. His great courage to challenge a tough mission.5. What can we infer about the young people from Paragraph 2 A. They left their parents for the first time in their life.B. They never thought of having a train adventure.C. They were hooked by the magic story of Harry Potter.D. They were excited about the coming train journey.6. What does “the glass bubble” in the fourth paragraph refer to A. The glass-domed train car. B. The sightseeing tour.C. A state of excitement. D. A summer camp on the train.7. What did the author learn from the train adventure across Canada A. The destination is what matters.B. Adventurous journey attracts young people.C. Enjoying a journey counts a lot.D The traveling experience is not real to him.CHoney from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper — a little bird called a honey guide. The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.8. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest A. It’s small in size. B. It’s hidden in trees.C. It’s covered with wax. D. It’s hard to recognize.9 What do the words “the follower” in Paragraph 2 refer to A. A bee. B. A bird.C. Animals or people looking for honey. D. A beekeeper.10. The honey guide is special in the way ______.A. it gets its food B. it goes to churchC. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees’ nests11. What can be the best title for the text A. Wild Bees B. Wax and HoneyC. Beekeeping in Africa D. Honey-Lover’s HelperDTaking a shower is relaxing. You can hum a song, daydream or think about nothing, leaving the real world behind you. But did you know that showering can also benefit your mind A research by Scott Barry Kaufinan, a psychologist from Yale University in the US interviewed over 3,000 people around the world. It turned out that nearly two-thirds of the interviewees said they had experienced new ideas in the shower and were more likely to have them in the shower than at work.So why does a simple shower have such magic power Science can explain itShowering can help to raise our level of dopamine, a hormone closely related to our creativity. “People vary in terms of their level of creativity according to the activity of dopamine”, explained Alice Flaherty, a famous American neuroscientist. “Taking a warm shower can make us feel relaxed and therefore make the dopamine level rise and bring 'Aha! moment to us.”Besides the chemical changes, showering may give you a break from what you feel you have been stuck with. Especially when you have thought hard all day about a problem, jumping into the shower can keep you from the outside world so that you can focus on your inner feelings and memories. In this way, according to American psychologist Shelley H. Carson. author of Your Creative Brain. “A showering hour may turn into an ‘incubation period’ for your ideas.”Compared with sitting in front of a computer, taking a shower is something we do less frequently in our daily life. When showering, we get a fresh experience with the change of location, temperature and humidity. “New and unexpected experiences can lead to positive changes in thinking,” explained Kaufman. “Getting off the couch and jumping in the shower may create a distance and force you to think from a new point of view.”Showering allows us to enjoy the creative juices of our minds, but it needn't just be the bathroom where you get your inspiration. For instance. Gertrude Stein, a female American writer and poet, got new ideas by driving around a farm and stopping at different cows until she found the one that most inspired her. So try to create your own way to free your mind, whether it's a walk near the ocean, a country drive or reading a book at home.12. According to the article, what changes can showering cause A. Increasing the level of dopamine. B. Bringing the terrible moment to us.C. Leading to boredom or tiredness. D. Setting the creative part of the brain free.13. If one has focused on something all day, showering can help________.A. draw one's attention to the outside world B. turn one's attention inwardsC experience something new D. many chemical changes take place14. It can be inferred from the article that ___________.A. changes in the frequency of an action can create a new viewB. it is a good idea to talk with others about their sources of inspirationC. our lives might feel longer and fuller if we frequently try new thingsD. it is helpful to try something different rather than stay focused on a difficult task15. The example of Gertnude Stein in the last paragraph is used to________.A. show that creativity often comes from strange placesB. point out to readers that it's hard to find inspirationC. explain how to link inspiration with readers' daily livesD. encourage readers to find their own ways of getting inspiration第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。In the long history of about 5,000 years, numerous Chinese traditional festivals were celebrated in memory of gods or some significant days, some of which are passed down from generation to generation and people always practice special traditional activities in each festival.Qingming FestivalQingming Festival is on the 15th day after Spring Equinox, round April 4 or April 5 every year. ___16___ They remove the weeds growing on the ancestors’ tombs to make them clean, so this festival is also called Tomb-sweeping Festival. If hungry, the wolf might be dangerous. If anyone sees this animal, please inform the nearest police station.”Buried in making lunch before her baby woke up, Mrs. Smith switched the radio off with a little attention. In order to avoid disturbing her sleeping baby, she pushed the pram (婴儿车) into the garden, left it under a tree out of the sun as usual and went into the kitchen.Several minutes later, she came to the back door to see if everything was all right. To her a little surprise, there was a big “dog” standing by the pram, looking at the baby. “That’s the Johnson’s dog. I’ve told them they ought to keep that great animal in their own garden. Those dogs are a bit too much like wolves.” Mrs. Smith thought. Then she went cold. “Wolves. What have I heard about wolves ” She was sure she had heard something about an escaped wolf on the radio. She looked hard at the creature by the pram. The more she looked, the more certain she became. It wasn’t the dog from next door. Like it, but different. It was as big as the dog, but the color was greyer and it looked thinner. At this moment the creature put its front legs on the side of the pram and looked at the sleeping baby, licking its face. The baby woke up and began to cry quietly. Mrs. Smith wanted to scream, but she knew it would be wrong to do that. What should she do “Inform the police,” the radio had said. Very quietly she slipped into the kitchen and came back with the meat. The wolf was still standing over the pram licking the baby’s face. She threw the meat into a corner under a tree well away from the pram. As the meat hit the ground the wolf looked round. It hesitated for a moment, then left for the meat and began to eat it. Mrs. Smith stole to the pram and immediately picked up the baby and ran into the kitchen as fast as possible. She sank down into a chair, crying with relief.Holding the baby to her in the kitchen, she telephoned the police. When the police arrived, she told them what had happened, and took them to the kitchen window. The wolf was lying on the grass, still eating the meat. The police said they had sent for a man from the zoo and would arrive in a minute. Five minutes later, two men from the Monterey Zoo came with a net and a small cage. Before long the wolf was safely in the cage and taken away, the rest of the meat still in its mouth. It was her calmness and bravery that saved her baby. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
