Dear Chris,
How are you Last month, our school launched a “Weight Management Month” to promote
healthy lifestyles. I’d love to share my experience with you!
Diverse activities focusing on healthy diet and daily workout were arranged. We attended
nutrition lectures, shared ways of balancing our diets and joined in fun sports like basketball and
yoga. A highlight was the daily step-count challenge, where we tracked our progress using fitness
apps.
Through this event, I realized the importance of regular exercise and mindful eating. Hope
you’re doing well too. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Yours,
Li Hua

I dialed Jo Ann’s number, thinking this wouldn’t have happened if we had booked a motel.
Jo Ann answered. She apologized for not being there to greet us, explaining that she had been
trying to reach us. But a neighbor who suddenly suffered a heart attack was in bad need of her
company in hospital. She proceeded to instruct me to locate a spare key beneath the carpet under
the rocking chairs on the porch. “Just make yourself at home,” she said cheerfully. “Feel free to
use the living room, television and back porch.” I was relieved. For the next several hours, we
had a home away from home. The house was gorgeous, modern and tastefully furnished.
At 10:00 p.m., I heard a key turn in the door and Jo Ann was back. She was a gracious and
welcoming host. She apologized again for not meeting us when we arrived. We had a long
conversation about how she came to the village and her experience in selecting and building her
house. She did share with us some insider’s view: the facilities, the services and the residents
there, something that we would never have learned had we stayed at a motel. What little anxiety
I had left vanished. If I hadn’t endured the anxiety of “trying something different for a change,”
we would still have stayed at impersonal motels. And we might not have moved to Tellico Village,
where we are living now, pleased with our decision.

(Text 1)
W: Did you hear about Anna’s new job at the bank
M: No! Last I heard she was working at the theater.
W: Oh that was two years ago! Before this new job she was a waitress, remember
(Text 2)
W: I’ll call you next Monday to let you know how the party went.
M: I’m going to be out all day on Monday because my mom’s having a small operation that day.
(Text 3)
W: We stopped by to see if you could join us tonight.
M: It’s just not possible tonight. After I finish this physics homework, I’m going to the library to
get some reference books to finish my project.
(Text 4)
W: The view is so nice from here. You can see all the way to the beach.
M: I’m glad we booked our reservations early. We had a lot of choices concerning
accommodations.
W: And let’s not forget to go to the castle everyone greatly recommends.
(Text 5)
M: I could kick myself. As soon as I’d handed it in, I remembered what the answer was.
W: That’s always so annoying! But do you think you’ve still passed
(Text 6)
W: Let’s go somewhere exciting this year.
M: Mm. You say that every year, and every year we end up staying with your sister in Blackpool.
W: I know, but this year I want to do something different.
M: Like go to Brighton to see your mother
W: Be sensible. I want to go abroad ... see something exciting and get some sun.
M: We haven’t been abroad since our honeymoon, and that’s 25 years ago. Ah, now I see!
W: Well, yes. It is our silver wedding anniversary, and we should go somewhere special.
(Text 7)
M: How was the school sports day Sorry I couldn’t help.
W: Don’t worry about it. We had plenty of volunteers; lack of help wasn’t a problem. The weather
was, though. You know it started to pour down at midday and we got completely wet.
M: Oh, no. I thought of you when I saw the rain.
W: It completely ruined the whole day for me. The students couldn’t care less, of course. They
thought it was a great laugh. And we did manage to raise the money for a new sound system
for the hall, which was the whole point of it. So the head teacher was glad, which is the main
thing.
(Text 8)
M: Did you get a part in the school play, Zoe
W: Yes, Kevin. I’m going to be Juliet.

M: You must be really excited. So who’s going to be your Romeo Don’t tell me it’s Tim Lewis.
I’m so jealous.
W: Actually no. It’s going to be David Smith, which is cool because he’s also really cute.
M: So didn’t Tim try out for the part
W: Yes, he did, but Miss Rose chose David.
M: He can’t have been happy about that. How did he take it
W: Really badly. Miss Rose offered him another really big part but he just walked out and said
he didn’t want to be in the play.
M: Oh dear. Maybe I should go and talk to him to see if I can cheer him up.
(Text 9)
W: Wow, that was such a great film! I love action films.
M: So do I, but this one wasn’t as good as I’d expected. When I read the book, I couldn’t put it
down, but I never felt that excitement during the film.
W: Hmm, I know what you mean, though sometimes it works the other way, like last week’s film.
M: Which one was that I don’t remember.
W: That’s because you weren’t able to come to the film club that day! Your mom wanted you to
go to the newly-opened Oakbrook Center with her, remember
M: Oh yeah, to get trousers for school. Boring! But you were saying that that film was better
than
the book
W: It was, yeah. The story of the book takes place in India and I didn’t really know anything
about India. The film really brings the places to life.
M: That’s true, but with characters it can be a problem too. I was shocked when a crime series
I’d read and enjoyed was made for TV. The detective looked nothing like my picture of him.
He had no hair on his head, for a start!
W: How funny!
M: Well, what about next week’s film club Are we going
W: What is the film about
M: My favorite — a scary movie!
W: OK, see you there.
(Text 10)
W: I’ve learned so many languages. However, I have the deepest emotional connection with
Greek because my grandmother was from Greece and I’ve heard it ever since I was a child.
But I also really like speaking German. I always feel a little bit guilty that I’m from the UK,
but I’ve never really learned any of our local languages here.
The biggest challenge for me with learning a new language was with Russian. There were a
number of things that I wasn’t expecting to be hard that were. For example, there’s a whole
new set of letters. It’s not too different to English. But when you’re trying to learn a word,
it’s just an extra barrier to memorizing that word. First, you have to read it and understand
what all of the letters mean and then have to actually memorize it.

Technology has been an amazing resource for me. I could just watch videos in different
languages all evening. The Internet has brought all of those cultures much closer to me and
made them much more accessible. And since then I think there’s a lot of technology out there
to help you learn vocabulary or to teach you grammar.
