Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the seashore. Her husband died. She had no children and lived by herself. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.
But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, “I wish I could be of some use to the world. Why can’t I do good to someone else besides myself ” At last, she came up with an idea.
She decided that she would keep a lighted lamp at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes hit the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.
The lady felt glad when the thought came into her mind. She found that, if she worked an hour longer each night. she could make enough money to pay for the oil for the lamp. So she worked late and made money to buy the oil and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.
She did this for five years without any reward, or the hope of reward. However, good deeds are often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her from faraway countries. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.
She was happy with the thought that she was doing something good. So, as long as she lived, she would light her lamp each night and place it at the window.
24. How might sailors feel when they saw the lamp at the window
A. Thankful. B. Nervous. C. Sorry. D. Proud.
25. How did the lady get the money to pay for the oil
A. She worked one more hour each night. B. She raised money from the sailors.
C. She got money from the government. D. She sold tea and grapes to others.
26. What can we know about the lady
A. She knew the sailors. B. She was kind-hearted.
C. She worked on a ship. D. She lived alone on the sea.
27. What’s the best title for the text
A. Love for the Poor B. Ships in the Sea
C. Gifts from Sailors D. The Lady’s Lamp

Diwali, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” is observed in Canada every October or November. People mark the occasion in many ways — schools, businesses, community groups, and cultural associations all join in the festivities. Some companies host special Diwali dinners, while communities organize various events like firework shows, dance performances, street light displays, and theatrical plays.
Many women wear fine jewellery and silk outfits to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use Mehendi, a dye decoration which can last a limited time, on their palms, and then they will finally get colourful hand paintings. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have various types of sweets, salty and spiced food as well as Diwali herbs (香草). Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, especially in courtyards, on Diwali. Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada, but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic jams and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some businesses may close early on Diwali.
Diwali is called the “Festival of Lights” and is celebrated to honour Rama, a hero who once fought and won a battle against the demons (恶魔). In the past, people lit their houses to celebrate his victory over demons (light over darkness). At the same time, every household did careful and complete cleaning at home in advance. It is believed that the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, travels around the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.
Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its spiritual meaning is generally “the awareness of the inner light”. As the word “Deepavali” means “a row or cluster of light”, the festival symbolises the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness.
28. What can we learn about Diwali from the first two paragraphs
A. It is celebrated on a fixed day.
B. It centres on various local foods.
C. People stay up late to prepare for it.
D. People from all walks of life enjoy celebrating it.
29. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Popular. B. Free. C. Serious. D. Funny.
30. According to Paragraph 3, why did people make their houses bright and clean on Diwali
A. To expect joy and good luck. B. To pray for a good journey.
C. To create a romantic atmosphere. D. To welcome their friends to visit.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To stress the importance of a public holiday.
B. To briefly introduce a traditional festival in Canada.
C. To tell an interesting story about a Canadian festival.
D. To show different holiday celebrations in Western cultures.

When you buy a coffee table from IKEA (宜家家居), you have to wrestle with a bag of seemingly mismatched screws (螺丝钉) and some difficult-to-understand instructions. Or you can simply buy the same thing ready-to-use at a higher price. Which one will you choose The one that requires the less effort
Studies have found that people actually value the coffee table they have to construct with time and hard work. Inzlicht, a University of Toronto social psychologist, and his workmates introduced the Effort Paradox (悖论) to make sense of it: Though the law of less work suggests people make the easier choice, sometimes people value experiences and results because they require effort. Inzlicht’s aim was not just to name it, but to explain why people find effort so satisfying.
Their study suggests two possibilities: whether the satisfaction comes more from the good results of hard effort or more from hard effort itself. For the first, the good results seem extra sweet because of the sharp contrast between the unpleasantness of working hard and the joy of achievement. The second is self-delusion (自我欺骗): If you do something hard without a good result, you make yourself believe you must really like it because you have worked so hard.
The study also shows that even if the Effort Paradox applies to everyone, it doesn’t apply equally. Some people will naturally be drawn to hard effort more than others, while others seemingly can learn to value effort more. However, it doesn’t mean that you need to turn life into a never-ending struggle. Neither should you shy away from trouble. As Inzlicht said, making efforts “seems to be the key path, maybe the only path to meeting certain needs. You can’t get those without pushing yourself.”
32. Why is the IKEA table mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To promote IKEA’s design style. B. To explore the effort issue.
C. To show a shopping phenomenon. D. To introduce a DIY product.
33. What can we learn about the two possibilities
A. Working hard is pleasant. B. Good results bring people joy.
C. People like comparing things. D. Success is from self-cheating.
34. Which of the following might Inzlicht agree with
A. Great minds think alike. B. Nothing worth having comes easy.
C. Fortune favors the brave. D. Good things come to those who wait.
35. Which would be the best title for this passage
A. How Can People Live Life to the Fullest B. The IKEA Effect: How Effort Creates Value
C. Why Do People Enjoy Doing Difficult Things D. Struggle with Effort: The Path to Achievement

Every time I find myself caught up in the busy life, I’ll remember an autumn day. I was a high-school student at the time. I had to deal with school affairs, social activities, and the pressure of upcoming college applications. Fortunately, it was my neighbor, Mr Jensen, who brought me back to earth.
Mr Jensen was a quiet man in his seventies who lived alone in the house next door. Despite our age difference, we had a shared love for gardening, a hobby that formed an unlikely friendship between us. Often, we would spend hours side by side in our gardens, sharing stories about the plants and flowers that we tended to with great care.
One sunny afternoon, feeling stressed and anxious, I decided to take a break from my studies. I headed outside to my backyard garden where I began to angrily weed (除杂草), and my annoyance was letting up with each of unwanted plants pulled out. Mr Jensen was there as usual, taking care of his flowering rosebushes.
Seeing my frustration, he walked slowly towards me and silently started weeding alongside me. After a few minutes of shared silence, he finally spoke up. “You know,” he began, “weeding a garden is a lot like going through life.” Deeply attracted, I stopped and looked at him with curiosity. He continued, “Sometimes, we focus so much on the weeds — the problems and difficulties — that we forget to enjoy the flowers.” He pointed to the beautiful roses in his garden, their bright colors shining in the afternoon sun.
“Don’t forget to appreciate the roses, even as you deal with the weeds,” he said.
Those simple and deep words lit up a light in my heart at that moment. I stared at the roses, which gently swayed (摇摆) in the light wind with a few drops on their petals (花瓣), looking especially beautiful. I suddenly realized that it had been a long time since I quietly appreciated the lovely things around me.

From that day on, my life changed a bit. I began to slow down and notice the little things that brought me joy. Instead of rushing through each day buried in stress, I made time to walk through the garden, admire blooming flowers, or simply sit quietly with Mr Jensen. Our conversations became more frequent and deeper, and I found peace in his calm presence. The act of gardening taught me patience, care, and the importance of appreciating beauty even during difficult times. As seasons passed, I grew not only as a student but also as a person who learned to balance hard work with moments of stillness and gratitude.
“Mr Jensen, I got my college acceptance letter!” I said excitedly. He smiled warmly and gave me a gentle pat on the back. “I always knew you could do it,” he said. Then, without a word, he walked into his garden and picked a single red rose. Handing it to me, he said, “This is for you — a symbol of growth, strength, and beauty.” I held it close, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. That rose reminded me of where I started and how far I had come. Though I would soon leave for college, I knew that Mr Jensen’s lessons — and the roses — would always stay with me.
