High school ended and all I remembered was feeling stuck. Most of my peers (同龄人) had picked out their majors and some even planned their careers. But I was still wondering about that.
I’ve always enjoyed writing but didn’t know how to make a career out of it. After researching my options, such as journalism, I thought Professional Communications could improve my writing skills and lead me to a career in business. With that, I sent in my application, was accepted and started preparing for my first term of university.
When course intentions rolled around, I began looking at the list of minors. Marketing caught my attention. It would complement (补充) my communications degree while providing me with the necessary business courses that were outside of the program. Without hesitation, I scheduled marketing into my studies, with the goal of using that newfound knowledge to accompany the technical skills that my major would provide me with.
My school year began in a pretty typical way: the orientation week (迎新周), joining clubs and meeting new people. As time went on, I found myself enjoying the marketing courses more than the communications courses, and it was then that I first began to consider making a change. Finally, I spoke with a friend who had switched to a different major, and his words of encouragement were the final push I needed to go through with the decision. A few days later, I sent in my application, and soon I received my acceptance letter.
I’ve now been gifted with a wonderful start to the year, and I couldn’t be happier about making the change. I feel less pressured to “find myself” and can put 110% effort into my studies. A note to high school students: University brings with it a load of new beginnings and self-reflection. It’s perfectly fine to come into university thinking you want one thing and finding out along the way that it might not be the right path for you.
4. Why was the author at a loss after high school
A. She suffered from a lack of confidence.
B. She fell behind her peers in performance.
C. She was afraid to choose a wrong university.
D. She struggled to decide a future direction.
5 Which aspect of marketing attracted the author
A. Its business courses. B. Its exciting career opportunities.
C. Its stress on technical skills. D. Its courses related to writing.
6. What led the author to think about changing her major
A. The active encouragement from a friend.
B. Reduced interest in communications.
C. The growing passion for marketing courses.
D. Access to numerous new opportunities.
7. What does the author advise high school students to do
A. Think twice about major selection.
B. Be open to changing academic paths.
C. Concentrate all their efforts on study.
D. Engage in self-reflection consistently.

Nowadays, with human-AI interactions becoming more frequent and complex, scientists have made remarkable efforts to better understand human-AI relationships in terms of trust and companionship.
A group of researchers from Waseda University, Japan, including research associate Fan Yang from the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences have used attachment theory to examine human-AI relationships. Their findings were recently published online in the Journal Current Psychology on; May 9, 2025.
Mr. Yang explains the motivation behind their research. “In recent years, generative AI such as ChatGPT has become increasingly stronger and wiser, offering not only informational support but also a sense of security.”
Remarkably, the team developed a new self-report scale (量表) called the Experiences in Human-AI Relationships Scale, or EHARS, an instrument measuring attachment-related tendencies toward AI. This innovative instrument identifies two critical dimensions: attachment anxiety, characterized by users’ need for emotional reassurance (情感安慰) from AI systems, and attachment avoidance, reflecting discomfort with closeness and preferences for maintaining emotional distance from AI.
They found that nearly 75% of participants turned to AI for advice, while about 39% regarded AI as a constant, dependable presence.
However, these findings do not mean that humans are currently forming genuine emotional attachments to AI. Rather, the study demonstrates that psychological frameworks used for human relationships may also apply to human-AI interactions.
The results also suggest a need for honesty and openness in AI systems that simulate (模拟) emotional relationships, such as romantic AI apps or caregiver robots, to prevent emotional over-dependence. Furthermore, EHARS could be used by developers or psychologists to assess how people relate to AI emotionally and adjust AI interaction strategies accordingly.
As AI has been increasingly applied to everyday life, people may begin to seek not only information but also emotional support from AI systems. “It promotes a better understanding of how humans connect with technology on a society level, helping to guide policy and design practices that prioritize psychological well-being,” concludes Mr. Yang.
8. What is scientists’ focus in the study of human-AI relationships
A. Safety and teamwork. B. Reliance and bonding.
C. Comfort and relief. D. Information and emotion.
9. What is the author’s attitude toward the research findings
A. Highly doubtful. B. Overly enthusiastic.
C. Politically neutral. D. Cautiously optimistic.
10. How is the text organized
A. Problem — solution — result. B. Concept — tool — finding — application.
C. Concept — data — analysis — effect. D. Theory — experiment — result — discussion.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Emotional Dangers of AI Companionship.
B. Measuring Human Trust in Advanced Technologies.
C. Applying Attachment Theory to Human-AI Bonds.
D. The EHARS: A New Tool for AI Psychology.

Modern ecology has revolutionized our understanding of forests. No longer seen as passive collections of trees, they are now recognized as dynamic communities connected by vast underground fungal (真菌的) networks called the “Wood Wide Web”. These complex mycorrhizal (菌根) systems enable trees to exchange nutrients, transmit danger signals, recognize relationship, and even pass on survival strategies — capabilities that redefine traditional concepts of plant behavior.
The most convincing evidence comes from a 2022 Nature study in British Columbia’s ancient forests. Researchers discovered that “mother trees” — mature Douglas firs — prioritize their own seedlings directing 15% more carbon to them than to unrelated young trees. When beetles attack, the affected trees release chemical signals through the fungal network, reminding neighboring trees within 30 meters to activate defensive responses within two days — a process notably similar to immune reactions in animals.
Remarkably, these fungal networks may also help trees “remember” past experiences. Trees that survive droughts “teach” their offspring through the fungal connections, resulting in subsequent generations developing deeper roots and more efficient water conservation methods. This cross-generational memory, encoded in exchanged proteins and chemical signals, represents a form of collective intelligence.
However, this delicate communication system faces serious threats. Industrial logging destroys fungal networks, with studies showing cleared areas need 15 years to recover to reestablish 60% of original network density. Furthermore, climate change aggravates the damage: rising temperatures in Alberta have reduced mycorrhizal diversity by 30% since 2000. “We’re not just losing trees individually, but we’re destroying an ancient biological internet severely,” warns University of British Columbia ecologist Dr. Suzanne Simard, whose 30-year research supports these findings.
These discoveries are changing how we view forests. Some scientists argue they show a form of “plant intelligence”, while legal experts debate giving forests special protections. Sweden has already taken action, requiring loggers to protect key “mother trees” to preserve the network.
12. Why do the trees give off chemical signals when attacked
A. To identify genetic relationships.
B. To store drought survival strategies.
C. To inform neighbors of defensive preparations.
D. To speed up the carbon transfer among the trees.
13. What can we learn about the “cross-generational memory” from Paragraph 3
A. It fades in a short time. B. It leads to protein exchange.
C. It relies on root-to-root contact. D. It helps pass down survival skills.
14. What does the underlined word “aggravates” mean in paragraph 4
A. Analyzes. B. Worsens. C. Records. D. Relieves.
15 What is the main idea of the text
A. The intelligent network among trees. B. The emerging threats to forest ecosystems.
C. The destructive effects of climate on forests. D. The important role of mother trees in forests.

How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career
When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.
Think about what you like to do. If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go, of course, but you can’t always make money doing things you like (like video games or drinking beer). ____16____
Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn’t sound so bad. ____17____ Or maybe that’s out of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker. These are all great choices. But often they are not something you’re really passionate about. It’s kind of like just doing something because it’s there——not very inspired.
____18____ Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better. For example, taking care of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease. ____19____ And if you choose one of them for that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day.
____20____ The point isn’t how you serve the world, but just serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose. If you choose a purposeful and enjoyable job, you’re always further along than most people.
A. There are endless ways to do that.
B. Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer
C. However, there’s another way that is perhaps better.
D. You are dreaming of a well-paid job which you like best.
E It’s essential not to concentrate on interests and good payment.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
