There comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I stayed with our elder son Nathaniel in Los Angeles — our first visit in several years and the longest since he moved west in 2014. A whole week under his roof!
I had thought we had the mutual (互相的) feeling — missing each other, but it didn’t turn out that way.
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel said on our first night.
The same happened when I washed my hands. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought is a concern. But I also got instructions for pulling extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen count er and to use the dishcloth, which didn’t seem clean.
More of these followed. At first I wondered how I’d raised such a tyrant (暴君). Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at Nathaniel and his brothers and sisters when they were young. Now it was payback time. I remembered getting upset at my own father’s commands growing up, so I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s household rules.
Our role reversal (反转) revealed another side to my elder boy, giving me hope for his future parenting ability.
One afternoon we were walking along EI Matador Beach and Nathaniel gently guided me from one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my aching feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy stretch.
“You did it! I’m really proud,” he said with a broad smile on his face, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.
24.What specific rule did Nathaniel require about kitchen cleaning
A.Using only new dishcloths. B.Keeping the sink dry at all times.
C.Washing hands before touching dishes. D.Pulling extra paper towels to wipe the counter.
25.How does the author feel about Nathaniel’s future parenting ability
A.Uncertain. B.Confident. C.Puzzled. D.Annoyed.
26.According to Paragraph 7, how did Nathaniel help his father cross the beach
A.By carrying him over dangerous rocks. B.By choosing a shorter route to the sand.
C.By warning him about approaching waves. D.By patiently guiding his movements step by step.
27.What is the main lesson the author learned from his visit to his son
A.The need to maintain traditional parent-child relations.
B.The importance of communicating household expectations.
C.The value of mutual understanding and respect in the family.
D.The challenge of adjusting to children’s increased independence.
Following the conclusion of China’s 2025 “Two Sessions” political meetings, Yao Ming made a groundbreaking proposal (提议) for a nationwide “24 hour screen free initiative” targeting minors. This overall plan seeks to deal with the alarming 68% surge in screen addiction among Chinese adolescents reported by the National Health Commission in 2024. By systematically improving outdoor recreation, physical exercise, and direct interpersonal communication, the proposal specifically deals with the problems of digital overuse: worsening eyesight — with 83% urban teens requiring corrective lenses (矫正镜片), weakened social adaptability, and rising anxiety disorders connected with virtual socialization.
This proposal fits well with China’s ongoing education shift towards overall quality education. A prime example comes from Shanghai’s 2025 English college entrance exam reforms, where oral communication assessments now take up 30% of total scores — a strategic move to bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and practical social abilities. Parallel developments in Guangdong province demonstrate this educational evolution, with 85% of secondary schools carrying out compulsory team sports programs that develop leadership and emotional intelligence through structured group interactions.
Famous education specialists have voiced strong support for this digital detox approach. Dr. Li Wei, a leading sociologist from Peking University, explained during an interview: “Our studies reveal that students engaged in weekly offline group activities show 40% higher emotional resilience (情绪恢复力) scores. Face to face relationships affect the brain in ways that digital communication can’t.” In a significant policy consistency, the Ministry of Education announced phased implementation (阶段性实现) across 10 pilot provinces, integrating the initiative with existing mental health system including campus counseling centers and parental guidance workshops.
28.What is the main purpose of Yao Ming’s “24 hour screen free initiative”
A.To control Internet use.
B.To reduce study tasks on students.
C.To improve technological knowledge and skills.
D.To deal with the sharp rise in screen addition among teenagers.
29.According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is NOT true
A.The reform in Shanghai aims to cut down on book learning.
B.The measure in Guangdong is designed to develop leadership and EQ.
C.Oral communication assessments in Shanghai make up 30% of total score.
D.85% of secondary schools in Guangdong carry out compulsory team sports programs.
30.What does the underlined phrase “detox” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.A new tech product for digital fun.
B.A technical solution to improve online connection speeds.
C.A planned break from electronic s to strengthen mental health.
D.A medical process in order to remove harmful matters from the body.
31.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Digital Age Challenges for Teenagers. B.The Impact of Sports on Mental Health.
C.New Changes in China’s Education Policies. D.A Call for Social Engagement Beyond Screens.
More than 50 countries and localities, including the UK, have recently introduced taxes on soft drinks. There is still a debate about the effect of such taxes. A new research surveys the evidence on the effects of soft drink taxes on prices and purchases in 27 studies covering 11 areas.
The reason for taxi ng soft drinks is that there are costs associated with their consumption that people do not fully consider. For example, there is a large body of evidence connecting the consumption of sugary drinks with increased rates of obesity (肥胖), tooth decay (龋齿) and other health conditions, resulting in worse health for individuals and higher healthcare costs born by the publicly funded health service. Charging a tax on sugary soft drinks acts to increase the price, and can encourage people to turn to other things.
20 of the studies that we surveyed look at the effects of soft drink taxes on prices. These studies find that taxes increase the prices faced by consumers. The size of the price increases varies, reflecting differences in the size and structure of the tax, the set of products and the size of the geographical area to which it applies. For example, price increases are typically less than the amount of the tax in smaller areas—such as Berkeley—where the ease of avoiding the tax leads to competitive pressures to keep prices down.
A common review of taxes on soft drinks is that they disproportionately (不成比例地) influence lower income individuals, because these people spend a larger percentage of their income on soft drinks. However, poor diet and its negative health effects are also more common among lower income households; there could be a lot of health benefits if taxes lead these households to reduce their intake of sugary soft drinks.
A number of studies look at whether the effects of taxes differ across people, with varying, and sometimes contradictory (矛盾的) findings. For example, studies in Chile, Catalonia and Philadelphia find that purchases fell most among higher socio-economic status (SES) households, a study in Mexico finds that purchases fell most among lower SES, and another study in Mexico finds no significant difference across SES.
32.What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Why sugary soft drinks are being taxed.
B.How countries put taxes on soft drinks into effect.
C.The debate over the introduction of soft drink taxes.
D.The impact of soft drink taxes on public health policies.
33.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A.Price increase varies by region and tax structure.
B.Many big names are against the policy of soft drink taxes.
C.Sugar taxes are collected to improve community facilities.
D.Public health awareness has improved consumer behavior.
34.Which can best describe the impact of soft drink taxes on different SES households
A.Similar. B.Different. C.Ashamed. D.Predictable.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Soft Drink Taxes: A Smart Way to Stay Healthy
B.Exploring Global Health Projects and Their Impacts.
C.Influence of Government Policies on Health Care Costs.
D.How Do Health Policies Affect Socio-Economic Groups

Amellia received her end-of-year exam results — another failure in mathematics. Staring at the numbers and symbols, which were difficult to understand, in the test paper, she had to fight back her tears. She put the test paper aside and lay in the sofa, saying to herself, “I can never do this” in disappointment.
Having seen all this, Amellia’s father came, sitting beside her, “You can, if you think you can,” he said. His voice carried the firm message it always did when repeating his life’s mantra (口头禅).
“That’s easy for you to say,” Amellia groaned (嘟囔), “Math makes no sense to me.”
Her father sighed, removing his glasses. “When I was thirteen, I was asked to stand before the class to read aloud. I couldn’t. The words swam on the page. Dyslexia (阅读困难症) . No one understood it then. But my father told me those same words — ‘You can, if you think you can’ and eventually, I proved him right.”
Amellia wiped her nose, her father’s mantra sounding meaningless to her. Anyway, her problem was not dyslexia; it was math!
Months passed with little progress. Treating her efforts as useless, Amellia even gave up her struggle.
Each of Mr. Thompson’s math classes felt like approaching a battlefield unarmed. Unsurprisingly, she got another D for math in the October exam and she almost gave herself up as hopeless.
That evening, Dad seated Amellia at the kitchen table and placed a cup of tea before her. “I’m poor at math,” she sighed to the steaming liquid. “You are poor at math,” he agreed, surprising her. “But one day you’ll say you were poor at math.” He patted her shoulder. “The question is — do you want that day to come ”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Something in Dad’s tone inspired Amellia.

And as usual on Thursday morning at this time we take a look at one of the world’s capitals. Today we’ll be heading to Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and largest city. Located on the Atlantic coast of the country, Lisbon is built on seven hills with the Tagus River running through the valley, making it a very impressive sight. Its position on the Atlantic coast also means that Lisbon has a pleasant temperature during the winter and summer. Lisbon is quite big and about 600,000 people live there, but for the tourists, every place of interest is within walking distance of the city centre. There are lots of pleasant street cafés and gardens and beautiful old houses everywhere in Lisbon. So wherever you go, there are things to see. It is very nice to take the tram, but the best way to get around in Lisbon is to take the subway. You can visit Lisbon anytime during the year while the best times are from April to June and from September to October.

Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua, and I’m thrilled to hear about the upcoming China-UK Cultural Festival. I believe this event is a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to deepen their understanding of both cultures.
To make the festival more engaging, I suggest organizing interactive activities, such as Chinese calligraphy workshops, British tea ceremonies, and traditional music performances from both countries. Additionally, setting up stands with cultural displays could allow participants to experience different customs firsthand. Finally, inviting guest speakers to share their insights on China-UK relations would add depth to the festival.
Hopefully, my suggestions can be of help.

Something in Dad’s tone inspired Amellia. The next morning, Amellia deleted all social media apps from her phone. She began attending Mr. Thompson’s after-school tutoring. At first, progress was slow. Some nights she cried over difficult problems. But gradually, something positive changed. Variables stopped being enemies and became tools. By March, she was waking at 5:30 am to practice papers. She declined birthday parties and movie nights. Her father watched this shift with quiet pride, reminding her to relax and refresh herself from time to time.
On exam day, Amellia’s hands shook as she entered the hall to take the math exam. The paper seemed to be scary as ever. Then, her father’s voice echoed in her mind: You can, if you think you can. She took a deep breath and managed to focus on the test items. Gradually, she was fully engaged in them, writing steadily and working out every problem. By the time the exam was over, she was sure enough to have good grades, which was confirmed the next day by an A. At that time Amellia finally realized the power of belief and perseverance.
