Callie Clemens was close to falling asleep when an emergency message on the Facebook page she runs caught her eye. A tiny black dog had been seen crossing a road. Whimpers (呜咽声) had been heard from inside a nearby storm drain (下水道), so there was likely another dog — maybe more than one — caught there.
Clemens got out of bed and drove to the scene. Once there, she took a flashlight, pulled a metal grate (格栅) off the drain and climbed down. After lowering herself down the drain, Clemens went through about 10 feet of a narrow tunnel (管道) before reaching an area where she could search.
She pointed her flashlight at the dark place and saw two sets of eyes. Then the dogs ran off. Around midnight, volunteers arrived and joined Clemens. They worked until 3 a.m. trying to track the dogs. Although they were not able to find the two dogs that Clemens had seen, they did find a female black dog outside. There were at least two more caught below.
Clemens was not about to give up. She went home for a few hours of sleep and then back to the scene, joined by several volunteers. They finally found a tiny white dog. That left one dog underground. Clemens climbed down the storm drain several more times. But the fact that she found an exit hole and had stopped hearing the dog’s whimpers made her confident that it had found its way out.
This was not Clemens’s first time to get into a storm drain. Clemens is known in the Houston area for her rescue (营救) efforts. Over the past nine years, she’s saved at least 100 animals. Clemens’s act doesn’t surprise Tena Lundquist Faust, who runs another Houston animal rescue nonprofit. “Once she becomes focused on a rescue situation, she is unstoppable,” says Faust. “She is really a rock star.”
24.How did people know there was likely another dog caught in the storm drain
A.Its voice was heard by someone. B.It was seen crossing a road nearby.
C.Clemens saw its eyes in the tunnel. D.Volunteers saw it in the storm drain.

Born in the Netherlands in 1853, Van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a company of art business in a larger city. During the next seven years, Van Gogh bought and sold paintings in the Netherlands, Britain and France. He eventually realized that dealing with others’ artwork was not his dream. He soon discovered that his dream was to become an artist himself.
He spent much of his time in learning the basic skills of drawing. He believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That was when Van Gogh developed a style for color that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.
Van Gogh’s paintings are amazing representations of his view of the world. He used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three-dimensional. This quality makes people want to reach out and touch the painting.
Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of Van Gogh’s use of color and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls across the canvas, while the stars glow with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke creates the movement and lights. Under the sky rests a village painted with smaller strokes and finer detail, giving the impression of peace. A large tree in the foreground suggests that the view is enjoyed from the top of a hill, which offers a glimpse of the majesty of the night sky. The Starry Night displays Van Gogh’s ability to create a powerful image with simple strokes and oils.
Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. Yet Van Gogh today is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is strong; many painters mimic his style and use of color. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world.
28.How did Van Gogh learn to paint
A.By reading books about art.
B.By observing the world around him.
C.By studying the works of great artists.
D.By equipping himself with basic skills.
29.Why does the author mention The Starry Night
A.To praise Van Gogh’s ability.
B.To show Van Gogh’s style of painting.
C.To present Van Gogh’s respect for nature.
D.To express Van Gogh’s feelings about his art.
30.What does the author seem to admire most about Van Gogh’s paintings
A.Images B.Light. C.Themes. D.Brushwork.
31.What does the underlined word “mimic” in the last paragraph mean
A.Copy. B.Teach. C.Change. D.Create.
D
Even if you don’t worry that artificial intelligence (AI) will destroy the human race, you might concern that its fearsome appetite for electricity will destroy the environment. Asking ChatGPT a question means using ten times more energy than an old-fashioned search inquiry. Google’s greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) rose by nearly half between 2019 and 2023, as the AI boom took off; Microsoft’s have been up by almost 30% since 2020. With huge investments in new data centres planned, more rises seem to happen. But the spread of such pessimistic sentiments (悲观情绪) is inappropriate. In absolute terms, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume. Better still, AI can help remove carbon from the industries that have proved hardest to clean up.
Consider AI’s appetite for energy first. The International Energy Agency (IEA) thinks that electricity consumption by data centres could as much as triple (三倍) in the next five years. Even if energy usage soars, though, the base is still low. Data centres today account for about 1.5% of the world’s electricity consumption — and the vast majority of that is due to streaming, social media and online shopping, not AI.
Moreover, some of AI’s electricity use will help with greening the economy. As we explain in this week’s Science & Technology section, AI excels at identifying complex patterns, processing giant data sets and upgrading systems, all of which can help reduce emissions. AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical networks, cut fuel use in shipping and spot otherwise invisible leaks of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
The task for policymakers and industry bosses is to maximize such benefits while minimizing the climate impacts. The most elegant solution would be for governments to impose a proper price on carbon and leave the market to do its work.
32.What is the author’s main argument regarding AI’s energy consumption
A.Governments must immediately stop AI development.
B.AI will cause environmental disaster to the human race.
C.Current concerns about AI’s energy impact are overstated.
D.Streaming services and social media pose greater threats than AI.
33.What does the underlined word “soars” in paragraph 2 most probably mean
A.Increase s quickly. B.Looks normal.
C.Falls sharply. D.Comes easily.
34.How does AI help to reduce emissions
A.By shutting down high- pollution factories.
B.By developing new carbon capture technologies.
C.By completely replacing traditional energy sources.
D.By conducting AI-powered data and system operations.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Data Centre: Powering the Future
B.Google and Microsoft’s Carbon Crisis
C.AI: Energy Consumer or Climate Rescuer
D.AI: Environmental Threat or Economic Booster

In the heart of a busy city full of towering buildings, there was a small, lovely bookstore filled with lots of books from the past and present. This special place was taken care of by Eli, a young man who got it from his late parents. But as ebooks and online articles became more popular, Eli faced a tough choice: keep his family’s bookstore going or change with the times.
Life in the city moved fast, and many other shops had to close down. This left Eli’s bookstore as one of the few friendly spots left in a city that was always changing. When fewer people came to the bookstore, Eli began to worry about whether he had made the right choice. It felt like a big storm was coming, and he wasn’t sure what to do.
Then, Maya came into Eli’s life. She was a teacher who loved books a lot. She didn’t think the bookstore was old-fashioned. Instead, she saw it as a special place full of stories and history. Maya’s support made Eli feel hopeful again. She showed him that the bookstore was important not because it made money, but because it made people happy and brought them together.
Eli felt inspired by Maya and decided to do something new with the bookstore. He started having story nights every week, where people could come and tell their own stories about adventure, bravery, and love. Slowly, the bookstore became more than just a place to find books. It turned into a busy spot where people could meet and share stories, making them love reading and each other even more.
But just when things were going well, Eli and Maya found out that a big company wanted to build a shopping mall in the place where the bookstore was. This news was a big shock. The growing community and all their hard work seemed at risk. The bookstore wasn’t just a shop; it was a symbol of hope, strength, and the power of togetherness. Losing it would be a big loss, not just for them but for everyone who found peace.

第一节参考范文(满分15分)
Dear Tom,
How is everything going I feel terribly sorry for missing the chance of answering your letter in time. You know, I’ve been preparing for the final exams these days, so I forgot to write back. In your letter, you asked me for my plans on summer vacation. Now, I am writing to tell you some specific details.
Overall, three things will make my summer vacation meaningful. To start with, doing a part-time job is my dream and I intend to work as a salesman because not only can I earn money by myself, but also it will broaden my horizons. In addition, it is a fabulous choice to visit some famous scenic spots such as Mount Tai during the vacation, in order to enjoy appealing scenery and make more friends. What is more, doing voluntary work, I think, will make a great contribution to the society, which is able to enrich my life.
I sincerely apologize again for my mistake. By the way, what’s your plan to spend your summer vacation
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节参考范文(满分25分)
So, Eli and Maya decided to fight to keep the bookstore. They organized a petition and gathered signatures from the community, showing the company and the local government how much the bookstore meant to everyone. They also held events at the bookstore, inviting local artists and musicians to perform and draw attention to their cause. Their efforts paid off, and the big company eventually backed down. The shopping mall project was canceled, and the bookstore was saved.
This project led to a big success. The bookstore became even more popular, with more people coming to visit and participate in the story nights. The sense of community and togetherness grew stronger, as people realized the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving the unique charm of their neighborhood. Eli and Maya's bookstore continued to thrive, not just as a place to buy books, but as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of coming together to make a difference. They had proven that with passion and determination, anything is possible, and that sometimes, the smallest of places can have the biggest impact on people's lives.

If you have an umbrella, don’t leave home without it. If you don’t own one, you should probably buy one fast! But don’t worry, I’ve got some good news as well. Winds from the north will die down over the next month. That’s right, there will thankfully not be a cold wind alongside all that rain. Looking at the long term forecast to the following month, we can expect some sunshine and warm winds, bringing the temperature up to 25 degrees. But not just yet; we live in Canada after all, not Miami Beach! Tonight, expect temperatures to fall from the average of 15 degrees down by about 10 degrees. Remember what I always say: when the temperature gets down to five, pack a jacket and stay alive. Thanks for watching. Next is Jen with a local news update, and then stay tuned for Jimmy the Gem with sports.■
