Soon after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little patch of land, they faced a major problem—a plague of birds fed on their precious crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born.
Today, the couple credit this man, the celebrated bird photographer Manu Espinosa, with changing their lives, and helping them persuade others of the vital importance of conservation in this region.
Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with an increasing number of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations (海拔), which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species—nearly double the number found in all of Europe—within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One notable example is the Ajila family, who have deyoted themselves to preserving the long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajia has switched from farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists-work that he says is a better livelihood than farming.
“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation,” says Luis Jr., Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations.”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former farm into a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t go as planned: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, who paid just $ 10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife—and the people who visit-flourish,” Angel Paz says.
24. What advice did the photographer give to the couple
A. Photographing the birds. B. Coexisting with the birds.
C. Protecting their precious crops. D. Taking care of their property.
25. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about

26. What have the Ajila family achieved
A. Helping other farmers shake off poverty.
B. Combining profitability with sustainability.
C. Applying new technology in modern farming.
D. Changing the landscapes of their residential areas.
27. What can we learn from Angel Paz’s story
A. Well begun is half done. B. It takes time to bear fruit.
C. The early bird catches the worm. D. The secret to success is adaptability.

Finland was known as a rather quiet country. Since 2008, the Country Brand Delegation (国家品牌代表团) has been looking for a national brand that would make some noise to market the country as a world-famous tourist destination. In 2010, the Delegation issued a “Country Brand Report,” which highlighted a host of marketable themes, including Finland’s famous educational system. One key theme was brand new:silence. As the report explained, modern society often seems intolerably loud and busy. “Silence is a resource,” it said.
Silence first appeared in scientific research as a control or baseline, against which scientists compare the effects of noise or music. Researchers have mainly studied it by accident, as physician Luciano Bernardi did in his study of the physiological (生理学) effects of music. “We didn’t think about the effect of silence,” he said. Bernardi observed two dozen test subjects while they listened to six musical tracks. He found that the impacts of music could be read directly in the bloodstream, via changes in blood pressure, carbon dioxide, and circulation in the brain. “During almost all sorts of music, there was a physiological change with a condition of arousal (兴奋),” he explained.
This effect made sense, given that active listening requires attention. But the more striking finding appeared between musical tracks. Bernardi and his colleagues discovered that randomly added stretches of silence also had a great effect, but in the opposite direction. In fact, two-minute silent pauses proved far more relaxing than either “relaxing” music or a longer silence played before the experiment started. The blank pauses that Bernardi had considered irrelevant (不相关的), in other words, became the most interesting object of study. Silence seemed to be heightened by contrast, maybe because it gave test subjects a release from careful attention. “Perhaps the arousal is something that concentrates the mind in one direction, so that when there is nothing more arousing, then you have deeper relaxation,” he said.
This finding is reinforced by neurological (神经系统的) research. Relevant research shows when our brains rest quietly, they integrate external and international information into “a conscious (意识的) workspace.” Peace and quiet, both outside and inside us, seem to free our minds to naturally find our place in the world.
Noora Vikman,a consultant on silence for Finland’s marketers, knows silence well. Living in a remote and quiet place in Finland, she discovers thoughts and feelings that aren’t detectable in her busy daily life. “If you want to know yourself, you have to be with yourself, and discuss with yourself, and be able to talk with yourself.”
28. Why does the author mention the Country Brand Report in Paragraph 1
A. To indicate the authority of the Delegation.
B. To highlight the need of noise in Finland.
C. To explain why Finland issued the brands.
D. To present how Finland viewed silence.
29. What can be inferred about Luciano Bernardi’s discovery
A. It challenged the calming effect of music.
B. It illustrated the loss of attentiveness after silence.
C. It emphasized the role of silence between sounds.
D. It stated brains’ information processing in the quiet.
30. What is Noora Vikman’s attitude to silence
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Disapproving. D. Indifferent.
31. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Silence: A Limited Resource B. Silence: An Invaluable Power
C. Silence: A Misunderstood Tool D. Silence: An Insignificant Quality

Many young parents are confused about whether their children should have early day care (日托), and there have always been different views on this subject.
The British psychoanalyst John Bowlby believes that separation from parents during the sensitive “attachment” period from birth to three may scar a child’s personality and lead to psychological problems in later life. Some people have drawn the conclusion from Bowlby’s work that children should not be subjected to day care before three because of the parental separation it causes, and many people do believe this.
According to Bowlby, a great deal of psychological harm can occur when young children are separated from their parents. If they are left without touch for a while, they will have a higher stress level. Parents’ influence on their children’s well-being may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child’s brain is developing rapidly and when nearly all of her or his experiences are shaped by parents and the family environment.
However, there are critics. Some anthropologists (人类学家) point out that the love affair between children and parents found in modern societies does not usually exist in traditional societies. There has been a long history of the fact that father and mother did not bring up their children alone. Plato, around 394 B.C., argued that a system, of early child care would free women to participate in society. Results from Israeli and Dutch studies show that child-raising duties are more evenly distributed (分布) among a broader group of people.
Besides, studies have reported that early day care has a neutral or slightly positive effect on children’s development. They learn the benefits of being socially smart, understanding the concept of sharing and caring. They promote concentration skills, which is very important in their learning. There are games where children are taught basic language and mathematical skills through stories and everyday examples.
Common sense tells us that early day care would not be so widespread if children had problems with it. But Bowlby’s analysis raises the possibility that it has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead to more mental illness 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics. Whatever the long-term effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with. Children under three dislike leaving their parents and show unhappiness. At the age of three almost all children find it easy to go to the nursery. The matter, then, is far from being clearly known, though experience and available evidence indicate that early day care is reasonable for young children.
32. The passage mainly argues whether .
A. children under three should be sent to nursery schools.
B. children over three will accept school education
C. the family relationship is different in traditional societies
D. early day care should be totally replaced in modern societies
33. Which of the following supports Bowlby’s theory
A. Early day care wouldn’t be so popular if it had negative effects.
B. Separation from parents for young children is common in history.
C. Parents find the immediate effects of early day care difficult to deal with.
D. Studies show early day care has a positive effect on children’s development.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards early day care
A. Children under three should stay with their parents.
B. It is debatable and the settlement calls for the use of statistics.
C. The bad effect of it on children will disappear as they grow up.
D. It has potential benefits for both children and parents.
35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage
A. B.
C. D.
I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion

First aid refers to the initial medical attention given immediately after an injury or an accident. 36 They think it’s a job exclusive to medical professionals. In fact, it’s a life skill we all should try to learn.
According to The Guardian, over 150,000 people get critically injured or die yearly because of people’s lack of first aid knowledge. That’s a large number considering we live in the modern age. 37 We can reduce these life-threatening situations by learning the prompt care needed in such situations. Thus, more people must know what to do in case of accidents or medical emergencies.
Whether we like it or not, accidents and emergencies happen at any time. 38 In the USA alone, over six million people are involved in traffic accidents each year. In fact, it’s the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 54. That said, no one can predict when or where disaster may strike. These accidents can happen at home, at work, or while in transit. That’s why basic first aid skills like CPR, disinfecting (消毒) wounds, and learning to stop bleeding can go a long way.
39 It’s vital to prevent injuries from worsening until full medical help arrives. For instance, when a person experiences cardiac arrest, they only have 3 to 4 minutes before the brain lacks oxygen. What you do in these minutes will impact the patient’s condition. Calling for an ambulance is, of course, your priority. 40
A. Developed countries witness a greater death rate.
B. But it might encounter traffic jams during rush hours.
C. The bad news is that not many people know the importance of first aid.
D. Heart attacks and choking endanger thousands of lives on a yearly basis.
E. The first few minutes is the most critical in the case of a medical emergency.
F. That’s why it’s a part of our reality that we must always prepare ourselves for.
G. However, if you can employ the basic first aid skills, it can relieve the damage.

In a small country school, there lived two close friends named Ray and Toby. Ray came from a wealthy family, while Toby’s family struggled to make ends meet. Despite their differences, the two were inseparable and shared a deep bond of friendship. They spent countless hours together, whether it was playing games after school, helping each other with homework, or simply sharing stories under the shade of the old banyan tree.
On a sunny afternoon, Ray brought his precious stamp collection to school, eager to show Toby his latest treasure—a rare (稀有的) stamp gifted by his uncle. Toby, who had never seen such beautiful stamps before, stroked the stamps gently, his eyes wide with wonder. “Such an amazing collection! This rare stamp is incredible, Ray!” He exclaimed with admiration. After school, Ray packed the stamps back into his schoolbag and returned home, his heart light with the joy of sharing his passion with his best friend.
However, the next morning, Kay’s joy turned to panic when he discovered that the rare stamp was missing. He tore through his room, searching every corner and every book, but the stamp was nowhere to be found. His heart sank as a troubling thought crowded his mind—Toby was the only one who had got up close and personal with the stamps. Could he have taken it
The next day at school, he confronted Toby with anger. “Did you take my stamp ” he asked directly, searching Toby’s face for any sign of guilt. Toby, shocked by his questioning, replied with mixed feelings, “No, Ray! I would never take anything that belongs to you. You’re my best friend!”
But Ray, consumed by frustration and disappointment, couldn’t let go of his doubts. “You were the only one who saw it,” he said coldly. “If you hadn’t taken it, then where could it be ” Deeply hurt by Ray’s lack of trust, Toby turned away without another word, his heart heavy with the weight of the accusation (控诉).
The days that followed were filled with an uncomfortable silence between the two friends. They avoided each other, the once-strong bond damaged by the less of the stamp.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The blank pauses that Bernardi had considered irrelevant, in other words, became the most interesting object of study.
C. It emphasized the role of silence between sounds.符合。
30. 依据第五段she discovers thoughts and feelings that aren't detectable in her busy daily life. “If you want to know yourself, you have to be with yourself, and discuss with yourself, and be able to talk with yourself.” 选项A. Supportive.

Many young parents are confused about whether their children should have early day care, and there have always been different views on this subject. A. children under three should be sent to nursery schools.符合。
33. 依据第二段separation from parents during the sensitive “attachment” period from birth to three may scar a child’s personality and lead to psychological problems in later life. If they are left without touch for a while, they will have a higher stress level.如果他们一段时间没有接触,会有更高的压力水平和第六段parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with. Children under three dislike leaving their parents and show unhappiness. C. Parents find the immediate effects of early day care difficult to deal with.
Common sense tells us that early day care would not be so widespread if children had problems with it. But Bowlby’s analysis raises the possibility that it has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead to more mental illness 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics. B. It is debatable and the settlement calls for the use of statistics.中的debatable(有争议)与settlement calls for statistics(需统计数据)均与原文一致。

They think it’s a job exclusive to medical professionals他们认为这是医疗专业人员的专属工作,暗示人们对急救的认知存在误区,即很多人不知道急救的重要性。选项C. The bad news is that not many people know the importance of first aid.

E. The first few minutes is the most critical in the case of a medical emergency.
G. However, if you can employ the basic first aid skills, it can relieve the damage.

Stepping into Rural Life
Last Sunday, our school organized a social practice activity themed Stepping into Rural Life. Over 200 students participated, traveling to a nearby village by school bus. On arrival, we helped farmers pick fresh vegetables and fruits in the fields, experiencing the joy of harvest. We also visited local families, chatting with villagers about changes in rural life, such as new houses and convenient transportation.
The activity was widely praised. Students realized the value of labor and gained a deeper understanding of rural development. Many said it was an eye-opening experience that made them cherish food and respect farmers more.

The highlight was delicious homemade dishes that tasted like home.
Students left with a deeper understanding of rural progress and a sense of pride in the farmers’ efforts.
One day as Ray left school, something dropped from his school uniform pocket. Bending down quickly, he picked it up and his eyes widened. The rare stamp he had lost was right there! His face turned red as he realized the truth that he must have forgotten to put it back in his bag after showing it to Toby. Memories of their argument rushed into his mind, and guilt was full of his chest. He had hurt his best friend without cause. Determined to fix things, Ray ran toward the banyan tree where Toby often sat, the stamp clutched tightly in his hand.
Seeing Ray rushing to him, Toby was surprised. “Toby, I’m so sorry!” Ray said, out of breath and holding out the stamp. “I found it in my pocket. I shouldn’t have accused you. You were right. You’d never take anything from me.” Toby stared at the stamp, then at Ray’s red eyes. A slow smile spread across his face. “It’s okay, Ray. Friends make mistakes, but we trust each other, right ” Ray nodded, and they walked back to the banyan tree, laughing as if the silence had never existed. Their bond, once broken, was now stronger than before.
