We’re about 4 miles from Gallaudet University, where Solomon is a professor of biology. She and a student -Anna McCall -are taking a small boat to collect water samples from the Anacostin River. The river is no more than 8 miles long, but it goes through and around Washington DC.
For months, Solomon and her students have been testing for oxygen, salt levels and chlorophyll (叶绿素) in the river to judge is present state of health, which unfortunately appears to be poor.
To McCall, who was born deaf, Solomon is more than a role model. She’s a great teacher, strict but fair. McCall said, “if it weren’t for Solomon, I couldn’t imagine doing this kind of work.”
Solomon was the only deaf person in her family. In school, she was always good at math and science, but her interest in the environment didn’t develop until she was a teenager.
“When I was in high school, my dad was a visiting professor at the U. S. Naval Academy,” Solomon said. “We rented a house by a small river. We weren’t able to swim in the river because it was too polluted. ”
Solomon, who won 13 gold medals in swimming in the Deaflympics, would never forget that polluted river near her house. A career in science and environmental studies became her passion. But she also found another passion (热情): “How can I influence other deaf and hard-of-hearing students ”
It was a question based on Solomon’s own experience as a college student, first as an undergraduate (本科生) at Harvard, then as a graduate student at the University of Washington. These were schools where she was usually the only deaf person in the class.
Training the next generation of biologists who happen to be deaf has become Solomon’s goal, and for that she has received high praise at Gallaudet. Not because she’s an especially gifted teacher, but because she has learned how to get her students to focus on what they’re capable of not what they’re limited by.
24.What can we learn about Anna McCall
A.She is a deaf student of Solomon’s.
B.She is a role model for all students.
C.She is a river cleaner in Washington DC.
D.She is a professor at Gallaudet University
25.Which of the following words best describe Solomon as a teenager
A.Honest and brave. B.Passionate and positive.
C.Patient and powerful D.Selfless and careful
26.Why has Solomon received high praise at Gallaudet
A.Because she has been very strict with her students.
B.Because she has a natural ability to be a good teacher
C.Because she has helped her students develop their abilities
D.Because she has helped her students know their limitations
27.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.How to Take Water Samples of a River
B.How to Become a Successful Biologist
C.Train the Next Generation of Biologists
D.Teach Deaf Students They Can Do Anything
Flamingo (火烈鸟) images are everywhere in Florida on tourist T-shirts, hotel names, and the Florida Lottery logo. However, real pink flamingos have been mostly gone from the state since the early 1900s, when hunters nearly wiped them out, seeking their stylish and valuable feathers (羽毛).
Now, however, flamingos seem to be returning to Florida. Birders recorded 101 wild American flamingo sightings across the state in February, according to recently released figures from Audubon Florida. Environmentalists believe many of these birds were carried into the state on the winds of storm in August 2023.
Flamingos have landed in Florida after storms in the past, but they usually don’t stay for too long. This time, birders and wildlife biologists all hope that the creatures can stay there.
In recent decades, people have sometimes seen flamingos in Florida, including a well-known flamingo named Conchy, who was rescued from an airport in the Florida Keys in 2015. The data showed Conchy moved all over the southern part of the state, teaching scientists more about flamingos in Florida in two years than was known in the previous 100 years, writes Lori Rozsa.
Meanwhile, environmentalists have been working to restore (恢复) the local wetland habitats (栖息地). In the Caribbean and Mexico, protection efforts have also helped increase the number of flamingo populations. Now, those efforts seem to be paying off.
This year, forecasters are predicting a particularly bad storms season. It remains to be seen what that will mean for Florida’s burgeoning flamingo population—and other bird species, more broadly.
There may be a few silver linings, however. After storms in September 2022, the number of shorebirds found wrapped in dangerous fishing line dropped by 58 percent in southwest Florida, since fishing piers were destroyed in the storm. “We never welcome storms here in Florida, but we did welcome some passengers,” Jerry Lorenz, director of research for Audubon Florida said.
28.What made pink flamingos almost disappear from Florida in the 1900s
A.The loss of habitat. B.Tourism industry.
C.Frequent storms. D.The overhunting for their feathers.
29.What do we know about Conchy from paragraph 4
A.It was born in the Florida Keys.
B.It was found in a zoo in southern Florida.
C.It gave scientists insights into flamingos’ behavior.
D.It never left the area where it was rescued.
30.What does the underlined phrase “silver linings” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Something easy. B.Something good.
C.Something popular. D.Something interesting.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Impact of Storms on Florida’s Ecosystem
B.Climate Change and Its Effects on Flamingos

The recent drop in SAT reading and writing scores is a cause for concern, as it reflects a long-existing trend that began in the 1970s.
The most reliable explanation points to significant curricular (课程) changes, particularly in early education, as the primary cause. Once, a content-rich elementary school experience was the norm, but it has since shifted to a content-light, skills-based, test-centered approach. Cognitive psychologists stress the obvious nature of learning between the ages of 2 to 10 for developing language ability. This is due to the unusual language plasticity (可塑性) of young minds and the so-called Matthew Effect, which suggests that those who start with a richer language background will continue to perform well, while those who are less fortunate in early language exposure will fall further behind. This effect is rooted in the nature of word learning: the more words one knows, the easier it is to learn new ones.
However, direct (直接的) vocabulary teaching has been found ineffective. Most word meanings are learned indirectly through understanding the context of what we hear or read. To solve the problem, every student from kindergarten understands what is being heard or read. Well-organized and continuous lessons on the human and natural worlds can lead to significantly improved language scores in about five years. By focusing on a subject long enough to ensure all young children understand it, the main idea becomes clear, and word learning faster. This is especially important for low-income children, who often come to school with smaller vocabularies and rely on schools to provide the knowledge base that more fluent children might take for granted.
32.What mainly causes the SAT score drop
A.Increased interest in online learning. B.A shift towards skills-based early education.
C.Growing competition for college admission. D.Fail to recognize reading and writing in schools.
33.What does “Matthew Effect” mean in this article
A.Richer kids do better in school. B.School changes lead to lower SAT scores.
C.Early learning leads to better school results. D.Early language advantages keep getting ahead.
34.How can we help kids get better at words
A.By teaching more words in school. B.By reducing tests in early education.
C.By offering more English classes in school. D.By teaching about people and nature early on.
35.What will the author probably talk about next
A.How family life affects kids’ growth. B.How school lessons focus on a subject.
C.How students change the way of learning. D.How advanced technology is used in schools.

One day, Mr. King had an accident. A worker drove a small handtruck so carelessly that it hit the back of Mr. King’s legs. Mr. King, whose legs were badly hurt, was quickly taken to hospital. There a doctor asked him to remove his trousers so that he could examine his legs. To everyone’s surprise, Mr. King refused. Nobody could understand what the problem was. Finally, the doctor said to Mr. King gently, “Please tell me what the problem is. Unless you tell me, I shall not be able to help you.”
Mr. King looked carefully at the doctor. “Please don’t tell anyone else. If anyone at work discovers my secret. I shall lose my job. I’m not Mr. King. I’m Ms. King! I’m a woman! But I had to lie to the company and pretend to be a man in order to get a job.”

He called at the hospital after work to find out whether Mr. King was better. To his surprise, the person at the front desk told him that his best worker had been put in Women’s Room 31.
Ms. King had to tell her story to her boss, Mr. Pattis. “For months I tried to get a good job as an engineer, but it was impossible to get a job as a woman.”

【原文】A man woke up one day and surveyed his lands. “I need to buy another horse to help with the harvest,” he said to himself. And so the man set out for the market. He looked long and hard at the animals offered for sale before finally making an agreement with the owner of an expensive horse. The man would buy the horse on one condition: the owner had to allow the man to try out the animal before paying the money. The owner was puzzled. He had never heard of such a deal before, but he agreed to the man’s request. The man walked the horse home and put him in the straw yard with his other horses. He watched the animals to see how they would behave. Almost immediately, the new animal left the others and joined the laziest, fattest, and sleepiest-looking horse under the shade of a large tree. Seeing this, the man quickly led the horse back to the market. He gave the horse back to the owner and refused to buy it.

Not because she’s an especially gifted teacher, but because she has learned how to get her students to focus on what they’re capable of not what they’re limited by.

根据最后一段“By focusing on a subject long enough to ensure all young children understand it, the main idea becomes clear, and word learning faster. This is especially important for low-income children, who often come to school with smaller vocabularies and rely on schools to provide the knowledge base that more fluent children might take for granted.(通过专注于一个主题足够长的时间,以确保所有的孩子都理解它,主要思想变得清晰,单词学习速度更快。这对低收入家庭的孩子来说尤其重要,因为他们上学时词汇量很少,而且依赖学校提供的知识基础,而那些词汇更流利的孩子可能认为这是理所当然的)”可知,最后一段提到通过聚焦某一学科帮助孩子学习词汇,所以接下来可能会讨论学校课程如何聚焦某一学科。故选B。

The next day a meeting was held to discuss the problem of Ms. King. The boss of the company, named Mr. Little, told the story about Ms. King and then said, “We shall have to make a decision about Ms. King, whose story I have just told you. It seems that she told a lie in order to get a job with our company. I think this is a very serious matter. I am sad, but have to ask her to leave the company, as we have never had a woman working in this part of our company before.”
For a moment or two everyone was quiet. Then Mr. Pattis, in whose department Ms. King worked, said, “I don’t agree with your decision. Does it matter if an engineer is a man or a woman She is the best engineer in my office. I think that our company should offer jobs to people for one reason only, because he or she can do the job better than anyone else. She lied to us because she had to in order to get a job. I guess she also showed that she was enthusiastic and very interested in working for our company. You said that we have never have a woman working in this part of our company before, that’s all because we never thought of it. Yes ”
