三、阅读理解:本大题共5小题,共10分。
A
I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on Christmas Day. It was always quiet in the emergency room on this day, so I was not expecting any patients. When I was complaining about working on such a beautiful festival, a pale woman and four small children showed up at my desk.
“Are you all sick ” I asked suspiciously because they seemed all right.
“Yes,” the woman answered in a low voice and lowered her head.
But when it comes to their problems, things got a little strange. Two of the children had headaches, but they didn’t hold the head. Two children had earaches, but neither of them could tell me which ear was in pain. The mother complained of a cough, but she seemed to be pretending.
Something was wrong. I didn’t say anything but explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” the mother answered. I checked their charts-no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless and the hospital was warm.
I looked out at the family, sitting together under the Christmas tree, smiling and chatting with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them that they had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses’ station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses came into action, just as we did when there was a real medical emergency.
But this one was a “Christmas emergency.”
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. Usually we just tried to meet the physical needs of our patients. But today, we worked hard to exceed the needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas Day.
Later, when the family was leaving, the four-year-old girl ran back and gave me a kiss. “Thanks for being our angel today,” she whispered in my ear.

30.Recently, many people think it’s dangerous to use credit card numbers online. However, from time to time, we all use passwords and ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that may not be t 1 ! A new kind of attack is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers from web surfers. This new kind of attack is called “phishing”.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it means that a thief is trying to trick people into giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait (诱饵) in the form of great online deats or services. For example, phishers might use false emails and websites to trick people into revealing (透露) credit card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate (模仿) well-known banks, online sellers, and credit card companies. Successful phishers may make as many as 5% of the people believe and give away their p 2 information.

46.Weighing too much can damage your health, and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world. Sleep might be one answer to the problem. A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds.
Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weigh ing more, but scientists have had a hard time deciding “which came first, the chicken or the egg,” says Julie C. Lumeng of the University ofMichigan in Ann Arbor. In other words, it hasn’t been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. Both scenarios (情境) seemed equally possible.
To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and colleagues interviewed the parents of 800 third graders from around the United States. The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year. Three years later, the parents answered the same questions.
By sixth grade, about 18 percent of kids interviewed in the study were overweight. The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students’ race or gender. It also didn’t matter how strict their parents were, or whether they were boys or girls. Obesity struck all of these groups equally.
Instead, sleep seemed to be the key factor. Over the 3 years of the study, the children averaged a healthy 9.5 hours of sleep a night. Some kids, however, slept a lot more--or less--than others.
For the sixth graders, every hour of sleep above the 9.5-hour average was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being overweight. Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders. Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40 percent drop in obesity by sixth grade.
“I expected we would find that this (sleep link with obesity) was just a bunch of bunk,” says Lumeng, a pediatrician (儿科医师). But their findings were believable. No matter how her team looked at the link, “we couldn’t make it go away.”— Emily Sohn.

47.【答案】 As the editor-in-chief of our school newspaper, I propose adding two new columns to the front page: “Campus Highlights” and “Student Voices”.
“Campus Highlights” will showcase major school events, achievements, and interesting activities, offering a snapshot of our vibrant campus life. We believe that placing it on the front page ensures everyone stays informed about the latest happenings.
“Student Voices” will feature students’ creative writings, opinions, and experiences, fostering a sense of community and encouraging student engagement. Highlighting it on the front page emphasizes the value we place on student expression.
These columns will enrich our newspaper and strengthen our school spirit.
