Would you like to volunteer for IF Oxford, the Science and Ideas Festival this February It’s our 30th anniversary this year, and it will include over 100 events, both digital and in-person, in locations across Oxford city centre and southeast Oxford.
When to join us
This year’s Science and Ideas Festival takes place between Monday 7th and Friday 25th February. We have volunteering opportunities on weekdays, from 9:00 am to 12:00 am, or from2:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Even if you only have a few hours to spare, we can find something useful for you to do.
What to do
You don’t need to have any scientific knowledge to help at our events, just a friendly personality, lots of enthusiasm and be over 18 years of age. You might be helping to set up a venue, welcoming or managing audience members, assisting a Q&A session, distributing literature, collecting feedback, helping to manage an event on Zoom or supporting our social media efforts.
What to expect
Volunteers will:

·receive guidance and support from the Festival team, especially with our COVID security protocols(协议), ensuring we keep you and our audience safe.

There are many places to see lovely giant pandas in China. But where is the best place for you to go for a special panda trip What is the best time to go Here are some recommendations.
If you just want to see giant pandas, we recommend you to go to Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Base. It is the most easily accessible panda base. You can see pandas at different ages. This base is huge but usually crowded.
If you are looking for a deeper panda experience, you can join a panda volunteer program. Giant panda volunteer programs are available in three panda bases: Dujiangyan, Wolong, and Bifengxia. They take about 1 to 3 days or longer. Dujiangyan is the best place for a one-day program. If you want a less-crowded environment, consider Wolong and Bifengxia, though they require 2 or more days. Your work would include weighing and cleaning bamboo, making panda cakes, watching pandas being fed, and cleaning pandas’ enclosures (围场). At the end of the program, you will receive a panda keeper certificate.
Giant pandas don’t go into winter sleep. You can visit them in all four seasons. Spring and autumn are the best times to see pandas when they are most active and temperatures are most comfortable. If you visit between August and November, you will probably see lovely panda babies.
Giant pandas spend almost half their time sleeping. Grown-up giant pandas in captivity (圈养) usually eat twice a day: early in the morning and late in the afternoon. They usually sleep around noon, any time from around 10:00 a. m. to around 2:00 p. m. We recommend you to get to a panda base as early as possible, when it is less crowded and the pandas are at their most active.

Born in Hangzhou in 1911, Qian Xuesen attended schools in Beijing and then entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study Railway Mechanical Engineering. However, after the Songhu Battle broke out in 1932, Qian made the decision to switch his major to aviation because he realised that China needed its own powerful air force to protect and defend the country.
Qian went to the United States in 1935 to pursue his graduate studies. Over the course of the 1930s and 1940s, Qian became a pioneer in American jet and rocket technology. As a graduate assistant at the California Institute of Technology during the 1930s, Qian helped conduct important research into rocket propulsion, and in the 1940s, he and several other people founded the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, now one of NASA’s leading space-exploration centres.
After overcoming some difficulties during his final few years in the US, Qian returned to China in 1955. He received a hero’s welcome from his homeland and was put in charge of not only developing China’s rocket science but also its space and missile programme. At that time, China was poor and its rocket science was undeveloped. No institute or university in China offered rocket science as a major, and there were no talents or experts in this field in China. Nevertheless, Qian did not let that discourage him from taking on the challenge. When asked “Can we Chinese possibly make missiles ” his reply was a determined “Why not We Chinese are able to make the same things that other people make.”
Qian’s leadership, China developed the Dongfeng missiles, followed by the first generation of Long March rockets. In 1970, China successfully launched its first man-made satellite, Dong Fang Hong I, from a Long March rocket. Because much of the technology behind the Shenzhou rockets can also be traced back to Qian’s research, Qian earned the name of “the father of China’s aerospace”.
Qian read a lot and was extremely knowledgeable, especially in the area of frontier science research. However, what might have made him such an outstanding and creative scientist was probably his strong interest in other things, such as music and drawing. His deep appreciation for art often gave him inspiration in his scientific research.
On 31 October 2009, the whole country was saddened by Qian’s death, and people honoured and remembered him in different ways.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that about one in five adults in the US is illiterate (不识字的) or has poor literacy skills. I Love Books is on a mission to change that.
Founded in 2021, the social organization aims to end illiteracy by making sure that all children have access to books. Through selling clothes and other things online, the organization is able to provide new books for the youth. So far, it has donated more than 3,000 books to pupils across three Kentucky cities.
“One of the difficulties in achieving high literacy for kids living in poverty is that there are no books in their homes or communities. Their schools may not have a lot of books, either,” said Jonathan Beatty, the founder of I Love Books. “If you’re a parent and you have to choose between your meal, rent, or whatever bill that you may need to pay and a book, you’d probably choose the former.”
To increase access to books for future generations, I Love Books hosts a book-giving activity quarterly, working with schools and non-profit organizations. In the first book-giving event, more than 300 children from William Wells Brown Elementary got their own copies of LeBron James’ I Promise, which was read at the school each morning. “Most of the books are well received by teachers and students,” the headmaster of the school told Nice News.
The organization also hosts a program called BAM, which combines books, art, and music. “What if we show how literacy gives you the ability to write songs or understand music lyrics better If you want to be an artist, you need to read more about art to create your own.” said Beatty. He believes the program will be attractive to more young people.
