2008年9月份，总部位于瑞士格朗的世界自然保护联盟公布了2007年度的濒危物种“红色名录”，称目前全球有1.6万多个生物物种有灭绝危险，其中动物在这份红色名单中占据多数，北极熊、河马、鲨鱼、猿、珊瑚、海豚等人们非常熟悉的动物物种都存在灭绝危险。
　　为全球动物敲响警钟的，是成立于1948年的世界自然保护联盟，这个著名的国际自然保护组织定期发布的濒危物种“红色名录”是最具权威性的物种评估文件。
　　这份“红色名录”显示，目前全球有41415个物种面临生存威胁。其中，有16306个物种有灭绝危险，比去年增加了188种。近500年来，全球已有785个已知物种灭绝，另有65个物种通过圈养或人工培育存活。
　　据估计，人类有记录的物种约有170万个。世界自然保护联盟特别强调了动物物种的危险性，目前地球上四分之一的哺乳动物、三分之一的两栖动物、八分之一的鸟类正面临生存危险。
