Lead-in
Look and Discuss Show students two groups of photos:one group of Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, and the other group of Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione. Ask students whether these groups of friends are similar or different. Suggested answers:Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are very different. Liu Bei is kind and wise, Guan Yu is loyal and brave, but Zhang Fei is impatient and intrepid. Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione are similar.They are brave, calm, strong willed and kind. Free Talk 1a Ask students the questions in 1a and invite some of them to share the answers.
Pre-reading
1.Tell students they are going to read three posts on a forum.Have students skim Tom's post and find out the topic the students talked about. Suggested answer:They talked about whether friends should be similar or different. 2.Let students discuss this topic in groups of four.Then invite some students to share their opinions.
While-reading
1b Have students skim the other two posts and find out Matt's and Diana's opinions on whether friends should be similar or different. 1c 1.Let students scan the posts and circle Matt's and Diana's friends as well as their characteristics. 2.Ask students to match the people with the descriptions. 3.Invite some students to share in class. 1d 1.Have students read the posts again and answer the questions. 2.Invite several students to share their answers and give feedback.
Post-reading
1e 1.Have students read the questions.Give them some prompts to discuss the questions. ◆Think of a friend.What is he/she like ◆In what ways are you similar or different ◆How do the similarities or differences benefit you?Give an example. 2.Based on the above questions,the teacher can ask students to answer the first two questions in 1e. 2a 1.Ask students to look at the word snake and find the words hidden in it. 2.Have students read the meanings and match each word with the correct meaning. 3.Ask students to make sentences using the words. 2b 1.Ask students to read the words in the box.Make sure they know the meaning of each word. 2.Let students complete the sentences with the words in the box. 3.Check the answers with the students. 2c Ask students to read the passage and make sure they understand the meaning. Teaching Tip:The teacher can introduce Mark Twain's novel The Prince and the Pauper to students. 2.Let students complete the passage with the correct forms of the words in the box.

Teaching Reflection
In this lesson,students were engaged in discussing the question raised in the post.One thing that needs to be improved is that some students didn't fully understand the vocabulary in the Vocabulary in Use section.Next time,I will give them more examples and practice activities to help students remember and use the words correctly.
