The suffixes -ful and -less

We can add the suffix -ful or -less to some nouns to form adjectives. The suffix -ful means “full of”. The suffix -less means “without”.

TIP：Not all words have both -ful and -less as suffixes.

-ful后缀
-ful多加在名词之后表示“充满……的、富有……的、具有……的、有……性质（或倾向）的”的意思，是最常用的形容词后缀。如：
hopeful 有希望的（hope希望）　　　 　　
wonderful 好极的，精彩的（wonder惊奇）
careful 小心的、细心的（care关心）
helpful 有帮助的（help帮助）
useful 有用的（use使用）
meaningful 有意义的（meaning意思）
-less后缀
-less多加在名词之后表示否定（不、无）的意思，表示“没有……的”，是最常用的形容词后缀。如：
colourless 无色的
hopeless 无助的
useless 无用的
meaningless 无意义的
My best friend Max is a cheerful person. He always looks on the bright side of things. He is also very helpful. Once I had a sleepless night because I was worried about a volleyball game. I felt helpless. The next day, Max came and gave me some useful advice.
