2 Presentation
Subject - related Word Pronunciation Review
Write some school subject words on the blackboard, such as “history”, “maths”, “music”. Ask several students to read these words aloud one by one. After each student reads, the rest of the class and the teacher jointly judge whether the pronunciation is correct. If there are pronunciation errors, correct them immediately and explain the correct pronunciation method. For example, for the word “history”, emphasize that the stress is on the first syllable / h stri/.
Introduction to Diphthong Phonetic Symbols and Letter Combinations
Use the multimedia to play a short video about diphthong pronunciation. In the video, clearly show the pronunciation of /e /, /a /, / /, / /, /a /, / /, /e /, / / and the common letter combinations corresponding to each diphthong. After the video is played, explain each diphthong and its letter combinations in detail on the blackboard.
For the diphthong /e /:
Write words like “play”, “say”, “way” on the blackboard. Explain that in these words, the letter combinations “ay” usually make the /e /sound. Demonstrate the pronunciation of /e /by slowly opening the mouth from a slightly closed position, with the tongue moving slightly forward, and making a sound similar to the Chinese character “诶” but with a gliding sound. Let students watch the mouth shape and imitate several times.
For the diphthong /a /:
Write words such as “bike”, “like”, “ice” on the blackboard. Point out that the letter “i” in these words often represents the /a / sound. Show the pronunciation method: start with the mouth wide open as if pronouncing /a/, and then quickly glide to the position of pronouncing / /. Let students feel the gliding process of the sound and imitate.
Similarly, introduce other diphthongs and their corresponding letter combinations one by one, such as for / / with words “boy”, “toy” and the “oy” letter combination; for / / with “go”, “no” and the “o” or “oa” letter combinations; for /a / with “house”, “mouse” and the “ou” letter combination; for / / with “dear”, “near” and the “ear” letter combination; for /e / with “chair”, “pear” and the “air” letter combination; for / / with “sure”, “tour” and the “ure” letter combination.
3 Practice
Individual Word Pronunciation Practice
Distribute a handout with a list of words containing different diphthongs to each student. The words can include “cake” (/e /), “kite” (/a /), “coin” (/ /), “goat” (/ /), “out” (/a /), “fear” (/ /), “bear” (/e /), “pure” (/ /). Ask students to read these words aloud one by one by themselves, paying attention to the correct pronunciation of diphthongs. Walk around the classroom, listen to students' pronunciation, and correct errors in time.
Group Pronunciation Competition
Divide the class into several groups, with 4 - 5 students in each group. Each group takes turns to send a representative to the front of the class. The teacher randomly points to a word on the blackboard or in the handout. The representative of the group needs to pronounce the word correctly. If the pronunciation is correct, the group gets one point; if it is wrong, no points are awarded. After all groups have sent representatives for one round, start the next round. This activity can not only strengthen students' pronunciation practice but also cultivate their sense of competition and teamwork.
Tongue - twister Practice
Present some tongue - twisters related to diphthong pronunciation on the multimedia, such as:
“A big black bug bit a big black bear, made the big black bear bleed blood.” (emphasizing the / / and /e / sounds).
“How many cookies could a good cook cook if a good cook could cook cookies ” (emphasizing the /a / sound).
First, play the audio of the tongue - twister, let students listen carefully, and then imitate sentence by sentence. After students are familiar with the content, ask them to read the tongue - twisters as fast as possible in groups. Select several groups to perform in front of the class, and the rest of the class can evaluate their pronunciation speed and accuracy.
4 Consolidation
Sentence Pronunciation Practice
Write some sentences on the blackboard, such as “My favourite subject is art because it's very interesting.”, “I like English because the teacher is kind.”, “The toy boy enjoys playing with his toys.”. These sentences contain words with different diphthongs. Ask students to read these sentences aloud, paying attention to not only the pronunciation of each word but also the intonation and rhythm of the sentence. Let students read in pairs first, and then invite several pairs to read in front of the class for demonstration.
Mini - dialogue Practice
Provide some simple mini - dialogues related to school subjects and students' preferences on the multimedia. For example:
A: What's your favourite subject
B: My favourite subject is music.
A: Why do you like it
B: Because it's exciting and I can sing along with the music.
Let students practice reading these dialogues in pairs, focusing on correct pronunciation, intonation, and expression. Then, ask several pairs of students to come to the front of the class to perform the dialogues, and the rest of the class can evaluate their performance from the aspects of pronunciation and communication.
5 Summary
Summarize the key points of today's class with students. Review the pronunciation of school subject - related words, the pronunciation of diphthong phonetic symbols /e /, /a /, / /, / /, /a /, / /, /e /, / / and their corresponding letter combinations. Emphasize the importance of correct pronunciation in English learning and communication.
Ask students if they have any questions or difficulties in today's learning content. Answer students' questions on the spot.
6 Homework
Ask students to record themselves reading the words, tongue - twisters, and dialogues learned in class on their mobile phones, and send the recordings to the class group chat. This can not only let students review and practice after class but also enable teachers and classmates to listen and give feedback.
Require students to find at least 5 new words containing diphthongs in their English reading materials (such as English storybooks or textbooks) and mark the diphthong parts and their corresponding letter combinations.
