A few days before Christmas, I used up most of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left, I realized I didn’t have enough to buy some Christmas gifts. I seriously considered going to my dad and asking for an advance (预支) on the next year’s pocket money, but I changed my mind after seeing an advertisement. It said a company was looking for salespersons to sell Christmas cards. Normally, I would only look through the ads, but this time, my situation was so difficult that I felt that I had nothing to lose.
I called the company. Although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products, they agreed to give me, a nine-year-old boy, a chance.
My sales materials soon arrived. It was supposed to be something small and light, but the package (包装纸) looked like a dinosaur’s (恐龙的) shoebox. It was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide. How large!
Although my parents supported my trying to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success. After all, I was afraid of speaking to strangers. However, I decided to challenge myself.
Without wasting any time, I set off and went from door to door, selling cards. At first, most people were hesitant (犹豫不决的). After I showed them the well-made cards and told them the story behind each design, their doubts slowly disappeared.
Finally, I made $20, a large amount of money for a 9-year-old kid. This experience not only solved my money problems for Christmas gifts but made me feel a sense of achievement and self-confidence.

In the past, satellites (人造卫星) have always been made of metal. Now, scientists are testing the idea of a wooden satellite called LignoSat. The satellite is in the shape of a cube (立方体) and it’s about 10cm wide. It has electronics inside, but the sides of the cube are made of wood.
The idea of using wood for satellites sounds strange, but there are some good reasons to try it. Wood is cheap and it doesn’t pollute. And in space, wood is stronger than it is on the earth, since there’s no water or O2. If the test works, wooden satellites could help lower pollution in space. Satellites usually burn up as they come back into the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层). Burning metal satellites leave behind a cloud of pollution. But when wood burns, it only leaves water and CO2 behind.
The idea for LignoSat came from Takao Doi, who’s a scientist and astronaut. He and other scientists thought it might be possible to build a satellite out of wood. The idea was simple, but the project wasn’t easy. First of all, the team had to do research on what kind of wood would work best. In 2022, they sent three kinds of wood to the International Space Station (ISS) for testing. After eight months, the tests showed that all three kinds of wood worked well in space. For the final satellite, the researchers chose wood. The wood is light and strong, and doesn’t break easily.
Last November, a SpaceX rocket carried LignoSat to the ISS. Over the next six months, sensors (传感器) from the satellite will help the researchers know how well the wood holds up. The project is a test to see if wood could be a good building material for space.

11. What is special about LignoSat
A. It’s quite huge in size. B. It’s made partly of wood.

A. By explaining reasons. B. By asking questions.
C. By listing lots of numbers. D. By providing research results.
13. What did the researchers need to do first for the project
A. Come up with an idea. B. Send wood to the ISS.
C. Build a wooden satellite. D. Find the best kind of wood.
14. What is the purpose of the project
A. To see how well a SpaceX rocket works.
B. To see how long the satellite can stay in space.

Working together brings unexpected success. Last month, my class were divided into groups for a project on global warming. My team worked together to collect information and prepare our report, with each member responsible for different parts. I focused on the influence of global warming, while the others explored useful ways to help. Everyone gave ideas to make the project perfect.
This experience made me understand the power of teamwork. Working together, we could overcome difficulties. And we supported and encouraged one another, making us stronger as a whole.
Working well as a team is the key to success. Let’s value every chance to work together and grow as a team.
