A laser(激光) is a device that makes a beam(束) of light so narrow and strong that it can cut like a knife. When it was invented, no one knew that it would change modern medicine. But now, with this wonderful tool, doctors can safely perform operations and treatments that were once very dangerous or painful,or simply impossible with regular surgical instruments.
The first person to imagine something like a laser was Albert Einstein in 1917.He realised that it might be possible to create a very strong, bright beam of light by changing the way light acted. However, he never thought about this idea any further and neither he nor anyone else tried to produce a laser beam for many years.
Finally, in the late 1950s, scientists began experimenting with light and figured out how to create the strong beams we now know as laser beams. In these first experiments, they used mirrors and artificial gemstones(宝石) to change the light.Other scientists soon were producing the same results by sending light through special gases. The light created by either of these methods was very different from normal light. The beams from lasers remain narrow and do not spread out as light normally does, even over great distance.
In the early years after the invention of lasers, scientists called them “a solution looking for a problem”.It was obvious that lasers were very special, but it took scientists a while to find practical application for them.Over time, hundreds of uses have been found for lasers in many areas of science and technology. They are used in the newest telecommunication systems,in computer printers, and in CD players. They are also used in show business to create special lighting effects. But where lasers have made the most difference is undoubtedly in the world of medicine, where they can be used for many tasks that require fine exactness.

Unlike many other exchange programmes, my school focused on arts such as singing, acting, dancing, and many other talents, so there wasn't much room for sports. Honestly, in the beginning, I was a little sad because I wanted to participate in basketball. However, I did not let that disappoint me. After a while, I took a pause for some self-reflection. I remembered how much I like to sing even though I don't think I'm good at it. I then thought to myself, “Why not be the one to try acting?”
After my first week, I loved the school! My art classes feel like a break from reality and the scenery at my school makes me feel as though I am in some talent-based American high school movies. Every morning, we are welcomed with the beautiful voices from my teachers. At lunch, we are entertained with musical performances by any student who wishes to sing.
During my second week of school, I was required to perform my first five-minute play with my class partner. I was a bit nervous, but I gathered courage and did it. By chance, a staff person from the school office saw my performance. After school, on my way to the bus, she called me and informed me she had recommended me and some other students to participate in an upcoming two-day workshop. I first thought she was teasing me. When I got home, I found out she'd also sent an email to my host mum.
My host mum is very busy, but she planned her schedule around the activity. She picked me up from school and drove me to the workshop which was an hour's drive from my school. After the workshop, we were presented with tickets to watch the play the following day. After the show, I met with the actors, thanked and congratulated them. On our way home, I was smiling so much that my cheeks hurt. I appreciate my host family and school for giving me this experience.

People trained to detect lies often rely on multiple signs, such as eye contact, length of responses and the details in what people say, but studies have shown that assessing a wide range of behavioral information can make it harder to decide if someone is lying. Bruno Verschuere at the University of Amsterdam and his colleagues wondered whether solely focusing on the detail of statements could provide more consistent results.
To test this idea, researchers asked 44 students to go for a walk or steal from a mock(模仿的)crime. Students were instructed to lie if they committed the fake theft.
Next, the researchers recruited 171 people to watch six truthful and six deceptive(欺骗的) interviews from these recordings, ranking interviewees’ eye contact and detail level. The results revealed that both truth-tellers and liars averted (转移) their gaze a similar amount, but truthful statements were substantially more detailed than deceptive ones, suggesting the latter is a more useful way to tell that someone is lying.
The researchers then asked 405 people to judge the true nature of six truthful and six deceptive statements randomly chosen from the interviews. Around half of the participants used multiple cues to identify liars. The remaining participants solely ranked the level of detail in answers on a scale of 1 to 10, with l a 6 or above counting as truthful. Those using multiple cues distinguished lies from the truth 59% of the time, while those relying solely on detail achieved 66%.
“Our take is that using just one cue can provide a simpler way to judge lies from the truth,” says Verschuere. Nevertheless, in the real world, you would probably need to confirm the accuracy of statements through extra further investigations or follow-up questions, he says.
24.Bruno Verschuere and his colleagues conducted the research to confirm that .
A.behavioral information played a vital role in finding out the truth
B.it’s relatively easier to identify liars by relying only on the detail of statements

B.Liars turned away their eyes more often than truth—tellers.
C.It’s difficult for participants to detect liars by using multiple cues like eye contact.
D.Participants who relied on one cue pan distinguish lies from the truth faultlessly.
26.What did Verschuere think of the real-life application of his research
A.It had no potential market. B.It made no sense.
C.It could be perfectly applied. D.It had some limitations.
27.What’s the purpose of the passage
A.To introduce readers to the classification of lies.
B.To encourage readers to apply the results in real life.
C.To inform readers of scientific findings on detecting liars.
D.To warn readers of psychological harm of telling a lie.
As you read this, pause to reflect on your recent interactions. As a politician, husband, and father, I encounter various spoken language styles: analytical or chatty, formal or informal, pointed or gentle, cooperative or decisive. Talk is the currency of politics. It is our way of negotiating, debating, and persuading. Talk is also the currency of learning-how we develop our ideas, deepen our thinking and share our feelings.
That’s why I want speaking skills, sometimes called “oracy”, to play an important part in Labor’s plans for a reformed school curriculum (课程).
Employers value speaking skills equally with reading and writing. The ability to speak well and express yourself should be something every child should master. But the curriculum doesn’t allow us to provide this. This is short-sighted. An inability to express your thoughts fluently is a key barrier to getting on and doing well in life.
Oracy is in part about good public speaking and debating skills, but in reality, it’s about teaching young people to make strong arguments, choose wise words, understand their audience, form meaningful social connections, and use facial expressions and body language to convey their message. Above all else it’s about finding your voice. To work out who you are and what you believe. If reading opens up a world of imagination and possibility, then speaking and listening opens up a lifetime of empowerment-a chance for those who feel invisible in their own country to be heard. It is about the confidence to speak out, to call out injustice or harm.
And the other side of speaking is listening, which can also be taught. Listening, truly listening, develops tolerance and understanding. And as parents we can play our part. We’ve all been there, at mealtimes, silent as we all stare at our devices. Our job, all of ours, is to get off our screens and give young people, and adults, the gift of listening.
So, oracy―speaking and listening―needs to be placed firmly at the heart of school life.
28.How does talk help a politician
A.It deepens his wishful thinking.
B.It enhances his analytical skills.
C.It strengthens persuasive power.
D.It provides emotional support.
29.Why does the author suggest a reform in the British school curriculum
A.Employers underestimate the value of speaking.
B.Academic pressure makes students poor-sighted.
C.Spoken language is regarded as least important.
D.Oracy should deserve more attention at school.

D.By employing the concept.
31.What are parents advised to do

What do you think about “regifting” — giving someone else a gift that you received before Is it dishonest to pretend that you bought the gift for the person you’re giving it to 32 Frankly speaking, regifting is something many of us have felt uncertain or hesitant about. Chances are that we get a gift that, however well-intentioned, just doesn’t match our needs or our lives and thus will go unused. So rather than have it add to household clutter or get thrown out, why not regift
33 Gift-giving happens within a web of relationships, and there are feelings to be considered (“Where’s that purple scarf I knitted you last Christmas ”). Seriously uncomfortable social situations ought to be avoided (“Why is there a greeting card from someone else for you inside this gift box ”). There are times when integrity might require us to inform the original giver of our intention to regift, even if the conversation might be awkward. 34 We also hope it shouldn’t be something they’ll just regift again and again.
But if you think about it, the three gifts the Magi brought to Jesus in Matthew 2 weren’t all that practical. If I got those three gifts, I’d probably keep the gold. 35
Keeping these considerations in mind, I say, “Re-gift away!” 36 In her book Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer points out that in Indigenous and Native American cultures, the attitude toward giving is different: “Whatever we have been given is supposed to be given away again.”
A.There are, of course, considerations.
B.However, I’d probably regift the other two.
C.To some extent, our unwillingness to regift is a cultural attitude.
D.Sometimes, regifting can be seen as a smart way to save money.
E.Regifting is a common practice in many cultures around the world.
F.Is it also ungrateful to the person who gave it to you in the first place
G.And we hope that the person getting the regift actually needs and likes it.

Gilleece didn’t like the idea that a theft could have happened at his place,so he spent hours searching different cameras, watching the woman’s every step until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived.Within minutes,a young man in a hoodie(连帽衫) approached the bench, put something in his pocket, and walked off.Gilleece posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page.“I didn’t want to criticize him,” he said.“I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.” Within hours,Gilleece got a text message from 17 year old Rivers Prather, who admitted taking the wallet and said he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days.Thinking the ring was fake,he threw the wallet into the ocean and took the money to buy a sandwich.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teenager to meet him at the docks(码头).There, they got to talking, and Prather said that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week.Gilleece,a father of two, took stock of(审视) Prather—his small body, his flushing(涨得通红的) cheeks—and saw him for what he was:more of a kid than a criminal.
However, the police were already on the case and because of the missing ring,Prather could be facing severe charge.Gilleece decided to help.He employed two local divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet.Meanwhile, the police wanted Gilleece to bring the teen down to the station.Instead,Gilleece called the police and told them.“He’s going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”

上文“What do you think about ‘regifting’ — giving someone else a gift that you received before Is it dishonest to pretend that you bought the gift for the person you’re giving it to (你怎么看待“转送礼物”——把之前收到的礼物送给别人?假装你买的礼物是要送给对方,这是不诚实的吗)”说明提出关于转送礼物的两个问题,空处和前文为顺接关系,应继续围绕转送礼物提出相关问题。所以F项“对一开始就把礼物送给你的人来说,这也是不知感恩的吗?”符合语境。F选项中的also与上文中的两个问题相呼应,进一步提出关于转送礼物是否不知感恩的问题。故选F。
33.上文“So rather than have it add to household clutter or get thrown out, why not regift (所以与其让它增加家里的杂乱或被扔掉,为什么不转送呢?)” 下文“Gift-giving happens within a web of relationships, and there are feelings to be considered (“Where’s that purple scarf I knitted you last Christmas ”).(送礼发生在错综复杂的人际关系网络之中,而且有些情感因素也需要考虑在内(比如:“我去年圣诞节给你织的那条紫色围巾去哪儿了?” ))”阐述转赠时需要考虑的人际关系和情感因素,如避免尴尬场景、告知原赠礼人等。空处和前文为顺接关系,并引出下文的内容。所以A项“当然,也有一些需要考虑的因素。”符合语境。A选项中的“considerations”与下文提到的各种需要考虑的情况相呼应,明确指出转赠存在需要考虑的因素,与后文的具体考量形成总分关系,衔接自然。故选A。
34.上文“There are times when integrity might require us to inform the original giver of our intention to regift, even if the conversation might be awkward.(有时候,为了保持正直,我们可能需要告诉最初送礼物的人我们打算转送,即使对话可能会很尴尬)”说明在转送礼物时,有时需要告知最初的送礼者。下文“We also hope it shouldn’t be something they’ll just regift again and again.(我们也希望这不会是一件他们会一再转送出去的东西)”中的“also hope”表明这是另一个希望达成的条件。
35.上文“But if you think about it, the three gifts the Magi brought to Jesus in Matthew 2 weren’t all that practical. If I got those three gifts, I’d probably keep the gold.(但如果你仔细想想,马太福音2中东方三博士带给耶稣的三件礼物并不都那么实用。如果我收到那三件礼物,我可能会留下金子)”说明通过对比东方三博士带给耶稣的三件礼物,作者表示自己可能会留下金子。空处和前文为转折关系,说明而其他两件礼物可能会被转送。所以B项“不过,我可能会转送其他两件。”符合语境。B选项中的“However”与上文形成转折,表明作者对其他两件礼物的处理方式与金子不同。故选B。
36.下文“In her book Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer points out that in Indigenous and Native American cultures, the attitude toward giving is different: “Whatever we have been given is supposed to be given away again.”(在她的书《编织甜草》中,Robin Wall Kimmerer指出,在原住民和美洲原住民文化中,对给予的态度是不同的:“无论我们得到什么,都应该再次给予。”)”

On meeting Oh Go Seng, the first thing that strikes you is the bright light in his eyes.He wears his 79 years very lightly, looking in far better shape than many people half his age.

Americans have been calling on police to change how they deal with citizens in crises(危机),especially those with mental health problems.
Police are usually the first to arrive at a serious incident and are trained to deal with crime and violent behavior. But a law enforcement(执行) agency in the central state of Illinois has found a new way to handle mental health cases. It is using video calls to calm difficult situations.
Restrictions ordered to stop the spread of the new coronavirus have left many people alone in their homes without support. Many people are unable to find mental health services or unwilling to go out and risk being infected with the virus.
The Cook County sheriff’s(警长) office led by Sheriff Tom Dart has faced many emergency calls about mental health crises recently.Such calls have increased by 60 percent this year.Dart says police officers are being asked more and more to arrive first to mental health cases. He says officers are being asked to do things they are not trained for or for which they have little training.
Dart says some programs have mental health professionals riding in a vehicle with law enforcement officers. That works for smaller communities. But Cook County, which includes the city of Chicago,is very big.
“We wanted a tool for the officers to get that mental health expert on the scene immediately,” said Elli Petaque-Montgomery,a team director.
So far,the department has 70 personal electronic devices(设备).They are used to make video calls. The department bought 35 with aid money when the program began. It bought 35 more when it became clear—the number of calls, which is now past 50,would increase.
Sometimes a lack of wireless service or another reason has not permitted a video call. The department says this has happened 20 times. In those cases, officers set up a telephone call between the person in crisis and a mental health professional.
Four mental health experts have been joined by four more to answer calls.Dart says the cost of the experts and the devices is much less than what it would cost to send out many mental health professionals with police.
27.What do you know about the emergency calls received
A.The officers don’t want to take care of them.
B.They involve 60% of the American citizens.
C.No professionals are available for the cases.
D.They are mainly about mental health issues.

Fortune Cookie Friends
Mei Mei frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in San Francisco. What should I do now ” Mei Mei grumbled, mostly to herself.
“What’s that ” her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok.
“Nothing,” Mei Mei mumbled. The girl had been complaining about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her.Mei Mei sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening,Mei Mei’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mei Mei was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mei Mei’s age. As she filled their glasses,Mei Mei realized the twins were in her class. Mei Mei ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Mei Mei’s mother found her soon after,in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out front with the customers.”

The Appalachian Trail winds some 2,190 miles across 14 states in the eastern US.Although it attracts thousands of serious hikers each spring, only one in four hikers completes the entire trail.
The Sutton family recently finished hiking the entire trail. They are a unique trio(三人组) as their son Harvey turned five on the trail, which makes him the youngest to complete the Appalachian Trail.
Josh and Carrie Sutton said they needed to take breaks from busy work called mini-retirements.“We set the family goal of living a life with extraordinary stories.Doing things like hiking with a child on the Appalachian Trail gives you extraordinary stories,” Josh Sutton said.
When Harvey turned three, they took him winter camping, and by the time he was four, the family completed a 50-mile hike, camping over six days.Seeing that Harvey developed a passion for hiking, they planned a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail.Hiking from end to end is called a thru-hike and generally takes five to seven months to complete.
They hit the trail in Georgia on January 13,2021.The first weeks were cold. The trail was icy and snow-covered,and the weather was often cloudy and bitter,so they made slow progress. They would wake up early each day, pack their gear(装备),and then start walking. As they had many miles to cover each day, they had to be creative and started using imagination and Skittles(彩虹糖) as incentive for little Harvey.
The family completed their journey on August 9,2021.Little Harvey learned to count all the way to 2,193,the total miles his little feet traveled, and a big number for someone who just started kindergarten.“I will do it again because I like it so much,” said Harvey.

We are often so attracted by the promises of modem digital life that we fail to notice its danger. It’s that feeling of losing control that we get a dozen times a day, from when we get distracted (分心) with our phones in a discussion to when we can’t appreciate a private moment without sharing it with virtual audience.
In my first attempt to get control over my technology use, I set my phone to vibrate rather than ring. Soon after, another problem appeared. The act of continually checking the phone became a habit. I knew then that using only tips to permanently reform digital life is difficult. We should go past the notification settings (通知模式) on our devices or apps and consider the more essential topic of why we use so many apps in the first place. What all of us who are struggling with these challenges need is a technology usage philosophy, something that explains from the ground up which digital tools we allow into our lives, why, and under what conditions.
Cal Newport, a professor of computer science, defines Digital Minimalism (极简主义) as a “philosophy of technology use in which you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected activities that strongly support the things you value, and then happily miss out on everything else.”
To do so, however, we cannot passively allow the tools and apps provided by the internet age to control how we spend our time or how we feel. Instead, we must take steps to draw the positive aspects of these technologies while sidestepping the negative aspects.
23.What does “its danger” in the first paragraph refer to

Reading books can obviously make you a better, smarter entrepreneur. According to a 2018 study of over 160, 000 adults in 31 countries, the more books that were present in participants’ childhood homes, the more competent they now are as adults with skills in literacy, mathematics, and technological problem-solving. Researchers note that book-oriented socialization, indicated by home library size, equips youth with lifelong tastes, skill and knowledge.
Growing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in literacy, numeracy and technological problem-solving beyond the benefits acquired from parental education or your own educational or occupational attainment. Kids who grow up in a home where reading is valued and modeled are more likely to be good readers. Strangely enough, though, advanced education doesn’t necessarily offset the “lots of books in the home” advantage. Adults who grew up with relatively few books in their homes and later earned a college degree had literacy levels approximately equal to adults who grew up in homes with large libraries but only attended school for nine years.
Jessica Stillman writes, surrounding yourself with more books than you could ever read says good things about your mind. Those books serve as a constant reminder of all the things you don’t know — which helps keep you intellectually hungry and curious. And possibly, this will keep you a little more modest, since research shows the quicker you are to admit you don’t know something, the faster you can then learn it. As Jeff Bezos says, a key sign of intelligence is the willingness to change your mind, something that only happens if you’re willing to admit that your current thinking may not be the best thinking. Modesty, learning and the willingness to change your mind when new data presents itself: That’s another three bonus every entrepreneur can benefit from.
27.What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about
A.The tough process of the research.
B.An inspiring discovery of the research.
C.Numerous data of the research.
D.Advanced technology of the research.
28.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 2
A.Compete with. B.Differ from.
C.Go against. D.Compensate for.
29.Why does the author mention Jessica
A.To keep readers intellectually hungry.
B.To stress the significance of modesty.
C.To remind readers of their ignorance.
D.To evidence the benefits of home library.
30.What is the passage mainly about
A.Home library size indicates some lifelong skills.
B.Home reading equals to a college degree.
C.Modesty makes a promising entrepreneur.
D.Childhood libraries lead to adulthood success.

I remember the park rangers saying, “Why are you going up there There is no water on the top, and you’re not going to find any frogs.” I said, “Well, I’m going to check it out.”
The Espinhaco mountain range in the east of Brazil is a very special place, and it’s mostly unknown. My house looks on to the mountain in Pico do Itambe state park, so I have my breakfast looking at it each morning. You’re surrounded by thunderstorms and strong winds, and the humidity is high. I waited for heavy rains and went to climb to the top.
What had caught my eye were the bromeliad plants, which look like the top of a giant pineapple. Each plant can hold up to 2 litres of water, and inside there is so much happening. Larvae, beetles, all kinds of invertebrate (无脊椎动物) live in there—it's a whole ecosystem in a tiny space. The central cup holds loads of rainwater, and I thought there could be some frogs using them.
Sure enough I was right. And this led me to discover a new species of frog, which I have committed my life to protecting. That day, I found a frog in the very first bromeliad I looked inside. I thought, wow, I’ve never seen such a tiny frog; it was the size of my nail. I couldn’t catch it—the plant was complicated inside.
I looked in the next bromeliad and there was another frog. They all had them in. I saw about 20 frogs that night, and caught three. I took them to the museum for identification, but couldn’t find a match. I ended up walking around with three little frogs in my bag for a year, preserved in a jar. I would take them to meetings with me, and ask people if they had ever seen them before.

根据第二段“We should go past the notification settings(通知模式)on our devices or apps and consider the more essential topic of why we use so many apps in the first place. What all of us who are struggling with these challenges need is a technology usage philosophy, something that explains from the ground up which digital tools we allow into our lives, why, and under what conditions.(我们应该跳过设备或应用程序的通知设置,考虑一下更重要的主题:为什么我们首先要使用这么多应用程序。我们所有与这些挑战抗争的人都需要一种技术使用哲学,一种从根本上解释我们允许哪些数字工具进入我们的生活,为什么,以及在什么条件下。)”可知,作者提出了一个更好的解决方案。故选C。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“Cal Newport, a professor of computer science, defines Digital Minimalism(极简主义)as a “philosophy of technology use in which you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected activities that strongly support the things you value, and then happily miss out on everything else.”(计算机科学教授Cal Newport将数字极简主义定义为“一种技术使用的哲学,你把你的上网时间集中在一小部分精心挑选的你所重视的活动上,然后愉快地放弃其他一切事。)”可推断,极简主义者上网用来做自己最重视的事情。故选B。

【详解】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了家庭图书馆给人带来的各种优势和益处,研究人员注意到,人在家庭图书馆的环境中长大,可以提高成年人的读写、计算和解决技术问题的能力,这远远超过了父母教育或自己的教育或职业成就所带来的好处。
27.主旨大意题。由第一段“Reading books can obviously make you a better, smarter entrepreneur.
由第二段中的“Strangely enough, though, advanced education doesn’t necessarily offset the “lots of books in the home” advantage. Adults who grew up with relatively few books in their homes and later earned a college degree had literacy levels approximately equal to adults who grew up in homes with large libraries but only attended school for nine years.
由最后一段中的“Jessica Stillman writes, surrounding yourself with more books than you could ever read says good things about your mind. Those books serve as a constant reminder of all the things you don’t know — which helps keep you intellectually hungry and curious. And possibly, this will keep you a little more modest, since research shows the quicker you are to admit you don’t know something, the faster you can then learn it.
故选A项。

Then I met an expert who took one look at them and said it was a new species. I never thought I would spend my career learning about frogs, but it feels like an obligation to finish this work and make sure they are protected. (心理描写) I hope to inspire others to do the same—because by protecting one species I am protecting a whole habitat.
Paragraph 2:
During my research, part of the area where these frogs live was destroyed by fire. Fire from the surrounding communities reaches the top of the mountain really quickly, so we have to find ways to stop it. I spared no efforts to communicate with the government, hoping we can set new reserves for them. At the same time, I managed to raise money to recover the destroyed area and its ecosystem. I think it will be my legacy, protecting this little frog. Hopefully someone will take that over, because the work won’t stop.

Katherine Johnson, a brilliant mathematician at NASA (美国宇航局), began working on the space program in the 1950s. Many of NASA’s first missions were made possible by her amazing calculations (计算).
As a child, she loved to count. Her father placed great importance on education and insisted all four of his children go to college, working overtime to pay for it. Johnson said this atmosphere was important to her success. “I was always around people who were learning something. I liked to learn.” She said.
Johnson graduated from high school at 14 and college at 18. In 1953, Johnson started to work for NASA, doing the math that powered engineers’ work. Then, because of her outstanding talent, she was moved to work on rockets with an all-male flight research team. As for Johnson, her calculations contributed to many of NASA’s most important projects. In 1961, with the help of Johnson’s work, Alan Shepherd became the first American to go into space. Johnson also lent her unbelievable talent to the success of the Apollo 13, which had trouble getting back to earth. She worked hard to calculate a safe path back to Earth for the astronauts.
Johnson retired in 1986, but her huge contribution to the space program has only been reaching the public attention for the past few years. Part of that is because, as she is the first to admit, science is based on collaboration. “I never took any credit because we always worked as a team, it was never just one person,” she said in a 2010 interview.
Earlier this year, NASA named a new data center after her. She was also given a Silver Snoopy award, which recognizes “outstanding performance, contributing to flight safety and mission success.”

Historically, France as a nation has been predominantly Roman Catholic. These days, however, France is largely secular (世俗的) in terms of its culture, with many of its citizens having long turned their backs on traditional forms of religion. With this reality in mind, we may wonder why a church-specifically Notre-Dame de Paris (巴黎圣母院) sitting on the small island in the middle of the river Seine-remains so deeply rooted in the hearts of Parisians.
When a fire caused great damage to Notre-Dame on April 15th, 2019, Parisians were horrified and shocked to see the destruction of their beloved “lady” (Notre dame being the French word for “our lady”). Sure enough, from the moment the fire was eventually put out, the French government began making plans for its reconstruction. So, given France’s secularism, what is it that makes Notre-Dame, a religious building, so beloved
Notre-Dame’s popularity partially arises from the publication of The Hunch back of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo (雨果) in the 19th century. However, construction on the Notre-Dame de Paris began back in 1163 and took more than 100 years to complete. Since its completion, the Gothic cathedral (哥特式大教堂) has been forced to move with the times on several occasions including two World Wars. Despite being attacked during times of political and religious upheaval (动乱), it has continued to stand tall throughout the centuries. The fact that it was effectively turned into a food storage space for a few years during the French Revolution shows the incredible ability of the cathedral to adapt to any situation in order to ensure its survival.
It is clear that for the people of Paris, it is part of the architecture of the French capital and, therefore, an important background in a city they believe to be the cultural center of the world. Though consumed by flames just a few years ago, Notre-Dame will undoubtedly recover and live on.
23.What message do the first two paragraphs convey
A.Notre-Dame’s unique status in France.
B.France’s key role in world culture.
C.Severe damage done to Notre-Dame.
D.Highlight of French architecture.
24.What do we know about Notre-Dame from the passage
A.Its name was taken from Victor Hugo’s work.
B.Its construction was finished in the 1200s.
C.It was destroyed in the two World Wars.
D.It once served as a shelter for the homeless.
25.What is the author’s attitude towards the recovery of Notre-Dame
A.Doubtful.
B.Uncertain.
C.Confident.
D.Indifferent.
26.What can be a suitable title of the text
A.Notre-Dame — So Much More Than Just a Church
B.Notre-Dame — The Passing Glory Never Coming Back
C.Notre-Dame — World-Class Cathedral in Ruins
D.Notre-Dame — Making its Way Back to the Top
Have you ever taken photos by using mobile phones with selfie sticks (自拍杆) 27

Celebrity has become one of the most important representatives of popular culture. Fans used to be crazy about a specific film, but now the public 1 to base its consumption on the interest of celebrity attached to any given product. Besides, fashion magazines have almost 2 the practice of putting models on the cover because they don’t sell nearly as well as famous 3 . As a result, celebrities have realized their unbelievably powerful market potential, moving from advertising for others’ products to 4 their own.
Celebrity clothing lines aren’t a 5 new phenomenon, but in the past they were typically aimed at the ordinary consumers, and 6 a few TV actresses. Today they’re started by first-class stars whose products enjoy equal fame with some world top 7 . The most successful start-ups have been those by celebrities with 8 personal style. As celebrities become more and more experienced at the market, they expand their production scale rapidly, 9 almost all the products of daily life.
However, for every success story, there’s a related 10 tale of a celebrity who overvalued his consumer appeal. No matter how famous the product’s 11 is, if it fails to impress consumers with its own qualities, it begins to resemble an exercise in self-promotional marketing. And once the 12 attention dies down, consumer interest might fade, loyalty returning to tried-and-true labels.
Today, celebrities face even more severe embarrassment. The pop-cultural circle might be bigger than ever, but its rate of turnover has speeded up as well. Each misstep threatens to 13 a celebrity’s shelf life, and the same newspaper or magazine that once brought him fame has no problem picking him to pieces when the opportunity appears. 14 , the ego’s (自我的) potential for expansion is limitless. Having already achieved great wealth and public recognition, many celebrities see fashion as the next frontier to be conquered. As the saying goes, success and failure always go hand in hand. Their success as 15 might last a lifetime, but fashion-like celebrity-has always been short-lived.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasise the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries — like the UK or France — people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realised that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance to us to learn from each other.
16.Why does the author mention his experience in Thailand
A.To show the English prefer to make long speeches.
B.To show too many words are of no use.
C.To show people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature.
D.To show even talk and silence can be culturally different.
17.According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better
A.By sharing different ways of life.
B.By accepting different habits.
C.By recognising different values.
D.By speaking each other’s languages.
18.What would be the best title for the text
A.Multicultural Environment
B.Cross-cultural Differences
C.How to Understand Each Other
D.How to Build up a Relationship
19.What’s the benefit of eating together at restaurants in some countries according to this passage
A.People can develop closer relations.
B.People can share the same culture.
C.People can get to know each other.
D.People can keep each other company.
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力)count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why Why Why ”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius(孟子), “is he who does not lose his child's heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven't any special ability Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time That's good, because it's always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.

Sometimes people call each other“scared cat”. But have you ever thought about this expression When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream.Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face.If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut?It isn't always clever to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's smarter to always hide our feelings? No!If you keep feelings of anger, sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and put them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are that you'd see little fruit flies flying all over them. They are bad.
You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.
24.When people and animals are aroused by fear, .
A.they may get ready to attack or run away
B.their muscles get neither tense nor relaxed

B.They always do something wrong to other people.

D.They don't pay attention to their physical changes.
26.What can we infer from the passage
A.Feelings will gradually disappear when you hold them in.
B.Bananas stay fresh longer when they are in a cupboard.
C.Holding in your feelings may lead to unpleasant results.
D.It's good for your health to keep pleasant feelings inside.
27.What is the purpose of this passage
A.To tell us that people's feelings are like bananas in a cupboard.
B.To give us some advice on how to express our feelings.
C.To prove that it isn't always wise to express our feelings freely.
D.To help us deal with feelings in a wise and proper way.
Imagine driving down a 10-lane highway and knowing that, high above your head, a mountain lion is quietly going along its way. This remarkable image could soon be the reality for drivers on one of California's busiest roads, as the world's largest wildlife overpass (跨线桥) begins construction in April.
The history-making project will comprise a green bridge built across the 101 highway near Los Angeles, creating a passage between two parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. The overpass will allow safe passage for lizards, snakes, mountain lions, etc with an acre of local plants on either side and vegetated sound walls to dampen light and noise for night-time animals as they go across.
The project, nearly a decade in the making, comes at a crucial time. Beth Pratt, a conservation leader with the National Wildlife Federation, feels as if she is running the last mile of a marathon. Pratt has spent most of the last decade planning the project, persuading transportation officials of its importance, and bringing donors to fund it.
The project is breaking records in many ways: Not only is it the largest crossing in the world, but it's also an engineering wonder. Robert Rock, a landscape architect who led the design, says this nature-centred type of construction makes it unusual among other wildlife bridges and underpasses around the world, which are typically made of cement (水泥) and steel. This one is designed to integrate into the environment on both sides—and send a message to the people driving below.
About 300,000 cars pass through this area each day, and Pratt calls it an opportunity for millions of Angelenos to see how humans can live more harmoniously with nature.“Someone could be in rush-hour traffic, and there could be a mountain lion right above them,” she says.“I think that's such a helpful image, and one that inspires me that we can right some of these great wrongs.”
28. Why is the overpass built
A.To attract visitors to watch the wildlife.
B.To help animals cross over a highway.
C.To bridge two mountains near Los Angeles.
D.To allow more traffic during rush hours.
29. What does Pratt think of the overpass project
A.It is a long journey.
B.It comes a little late.
C.It has little official support.
D.It has brought economic benefits.
30. What does the author try to stress about the overpass by mentioning Robert Rock
A.It stands out among similar structures.
B.It does harm to the local environment.
C.It has got little attention from engineers.
D.It has inspired the construction of overpasses worldwide.
31. What might Pratt expect of the overpass
A.It'll transform the image of the state.
B.It'll provide pleasant habitats for animals.
C.It'll be a reminder for people to care about nature.
D.It'll create job opportunities for the local people.
Are You a Prisoner of Perfection
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach 32 Are you setting yourself up for failure and shame when you can’t achieve the unachievable Understanding what drives perfectionism is the first step toward releasing this self-created anchor that keeps us stuck.
Shame and fear are often the hidden drivers of perfectionism. We believe that if we can fashion a perfectly polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us with criticism and we’ll win respect and approval.
33 Politicians who display a desperate need to be right and refuse to acknowledge mistakes or uncertainty are often driven by a secret shame. They fear that showing vulnerability(弱点) will expose them to the accusation that they’re weak. They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes.
Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better. 34 However, if we can’t relax and enjoy lighter moments, then we become prisoners of our perfectionism. We get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too seriously. Sadly, we deprive(剥夺) ourselves of the simple pleasure of enjoying the moment and being ourselves.
35 We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never learn from our mistakes; we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. The important thing is to learn from our error, forgive ourselves and move on.
Being human, perfection is impossible. 36 Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures—and enjoy our precious life.
A.Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize
B.A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings.
C.Do you fear that others will be horrified by what you judge about yourself
D.The addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect.
E.There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correcting along the way.
F.People who are addicted to perfection are often isolated, even if they seem outgoing and popular.
G.By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid the shame that drives perfectionism.

Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my first hour math test. I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house. Ten minutes later, I was settled with my friends on the school bus. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped over someone's foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted the jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn't long before there went the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. Then I couldn't help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night's football game. After a little practice, we nailed the cheer, so we decided we only needed to go through it one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans split down the middle of my backside.
I froze. I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing, and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd.(孟子认为“不失去孩子的心,就是伟大的人。”
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together. 所以“The Keys to Achievement(成就的关键)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选C。

I lowered my head, my face burning with embarrassment. But unexpectedly Ryan didn't laugh. Instead, he approached me from behind, took off his jacket swiftly and offered it to me, signaling to me to cover my torn jeans. Without any delay, I did it. Struggling against my tears, I did want to express my gratitude to him but courage failed me. In total silence, I left the courtyard.
Paragraph 2:
That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. I thanked him, giving the jacket back to him and telling him the cheer went great. Then gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus and thanked him again for his helping me out of the desperate situation. Ryan, with a broad smile, patted me on the shoulder and told me to forget about that, joking he fell like that a lot. Hearing that, I was amused and convinced that he was someone I would be friends with. Honestly, Monday was a great day indeed!
