二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
[陕西西安中学2022月考]
Best Science Fiction
Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson
This classic trilogy (三部曲) by William Gibson consists of Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.Starting the entire concept of Cyberpunk, Hugo Award , Nebula Award and Philip K.Dick Award winning Neuromancer remains one of the best sci fi books ever written and the entire trilogy is worth a read, even if it's the original that gets all the praise.
Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons
This series by Dan Simmons consists of Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion.Truly one of the greatest works in science fiction history, Hugo Award winning Hyperion Cantos is an absolutely excellent story of extreme terror, character building and wild world building that is almost without equal in the type. Why we haven't got a proper onscreen adaptation (改编) of this series yet, I have no idea, but perhaps it's best left in its original, amazing book form.
Ender's Game Series by Orson Scott Card
Ender's Game Series is often read in schools, but it has incredibly mature themes like isolation, loneliness, competition and fear, many of which are more relevant now than when Orson Scott Card first began the series in 1985.To follow the sci fi adventures of Andrew Wiggin, the whole series is worth reading: Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind and Ender in Exile.
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
This is the only stand alone book on this list, as the rest are all in a series, so if you don't feel like investing in 300,000 pages of content, Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash suits you. This book is the heir (继承人) to Neuromancer's Cyberpunk throne and an absolutely excellent read from Stephenson. The author uses virtual reality as his setting, and the main character is a pizza delivery man in one world and a warrior prince in another.

In the world of the book, China has become the first political entity by virtue of advanced technology to live on the moon in a serious, long-term way.
Before Mars (By Emma Newman)
Emma Newman’s science fiction sees a geologist arrives at a small Mars base after a lengthy journey, only to realize that things aren’t as they seem. The base’s AI is untrustworthy, and the main character finds a note by herself she has no memory of writing, which warns her not to trust the base psychologist. Can she trust the sights before her Or has the long trip damaged her mind
Artemis (By Andy Weir)
In his second novel Artemis, Andy Weir follows Jasmine Jazz Bashara, a porter on the moon who’s drawn into danger. Artemis is an entertaining read through an attractive future moon base, with plenty of one-sixth-gravity action and memorable twists. It’s well worth reading. Plus, there’s a talking book version read by Rosario Dawson.

You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans — between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(来源)of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate(说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped(倾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
13.What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for
A.Beautifying the city he lives in. B.Introducing eco-friendly products.
C.Drawing public attention to plastic waste. D.Reducing garbage on the beach.
14.Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3
A.To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art.
D.To find a substitute for them.
15.What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers
A.Calming. B.Disturbing.
C.Refreshing. D.Challenging.
16.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Artists’ Opinions on Plastic Safety
B.Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C.Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies
D.Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures
Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students.I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said: “Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today—and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do.Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided.Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His toy constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home.I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I'm just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you're asleep?”
“Oh, sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative.Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads.“That's pretty creative.Who does that for you?”
“Nobody.I do it.”
“Really—at night, when you're asleep?”
“Sure.”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”

17.Why did the teacher use Tinkertoys in class
A.To know more about the students. B.To make the lessons more exciting.
C.To raise the students' interest in art. D.To teach the students about toy design.
18.What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.He liked to help his teacher. B.He preferred to study alone.
C.He was active in class. D.He was imaginative.
19.What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Mistake. B.Drawback. C.Difficulty. D.Burden.
20.Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams
A.To help them to see their creativity. B.To find out about their sleeping habits.
C.To help them to improve their memory. D.To find out about their ways of thinking.

六、读后续写(本大题共1小题)
37.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of teaching a young couple to dive (潜水) in Thailand on one of my favorite reefs (礁). The weather conditions were perfect, with mild currents and excellent sight of the beautiful ocean and the bright, vivid corals. Even with their masks on, I could see the smiles on my students’ faces.
The dive couldn’t have gone better. However, things changed as we made our way back to the boat. As we swam back along the reef, I noticed the current (水流) changing. As it did, huge quantities of trash and plastic began to flood the area. I saw small reef fish swimming amongst the straws, plastic bags and other bits of rubbish. I noticed that some of the fish were pecking away (啄) at the plastic. By the time we got back onboard the boat, there were bits of plastic floating all around us. It looked more like a trash site than the ocean.
When I got home, the first thing I did was to go online and research plastic pollution in the ocean. I was surprised to find out that over the past decade, divers and beach lovers have seen a lot of changes in the oceans. Even very remote locations were suddenly filled with plastic and other chemicals. Plastics were entering our oceans at an alarming rate—up to 12 million tons each year. This huge amount of plastic was wreaking havoc (破坏) not only on the environment, but also on the marine animals that lived in the ocean, such as sea turtles and sea birds. Some of them were sadly mistaking the pieces of plastic for food. Pollution has brought our oceans to the point of disaster, and unless we make a great change, then our oceans and all of its living things, will be at risk.
Since that unforgettable plastic-polluted dive, I have become an ocean supporter and spend my days trying to get the message out there about just how harmful ocean pollution is, not only to marine life, but also to mankind.

根据第一段“But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.(但一根塑料吸管或一个塑料杯真的有什么区别吗?艺术家本杰明·冯·王(Benjamin Von Wong)想让你知道,它确实如此。他用塑料垃圾建造巨大的雕塑,迫使观众重新审视他们与一次性塑料产品的关系。)”可知,Von Wong用塑料垃圾制作的雕塑想让人们重新审视与一次性塑料制品的关系,由此可知他做这个雕塑的目的是为了引起公众对塑料垃圾的关注。故选C项。
14.
推理判断题。根据第三段“Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(来源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.(全球只有9%的塑料垃圾被回收。塑料吸管绝不是最大的塑料污染源,但它们最近却受到了抨击,因为大多数人不需要吸管喝饮料,而且由于它们体积小、重量轻,无法回收利用。冯·王作品中的每一根吸管都很可能来自只喝了几分钟的饮料。一旦饮料消失了,吸管也要几个世纪才能消失。)”可知,吸管由于体积小,重量轻,无法回收利用,由此可推知,作者在第三段讨论吸管是为了展示它们回收的困难。故选A项。
15.
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In a piece form 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate(说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. 16.
标题判断题。通读全文,结合第一段“But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.(但一根塑料吸管或一个塑料杯真的有什么区别吗?艺术家本杰明·冯·王(Benjamin Von Wong)想让你知道,它确实如此。他用塑料垃圾建造巨大的雕塑,迫使观众重新审视他们与一次性塑料产品的关系。)”和倒数第二段“In a piece form 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate(说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped(倾倒) from a truck all at once.(在2018年的一个作品中,冯·王(Von Wong)想要说明一个具体的统计数字:每60秒,就有一卡车塑料进入海洋。

The student would tell something wildly imaginative.和最后一段“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”可知,作者鼓励学生们说出自己最有趣的梦,并鼓励他们白天在课堂上要像晚上在梦里一样大胆地想象。作者这样做的目的就是让学生们看到自己的创造力和想象力。故选A项。
长难句分析His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect other students.
句式分析:本句为主从复合句。His presence meant 为主句; that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class… 为宾语从句,其中含有一个由whose引导的定语从句,修饰先行词teaching assistant。
句意:他的存在意味着我在课堂上有了一个意想不到的教学助手,他的创造力会感染其他学生。

37.【答案】One possible version:
Then the idea came to me: I could appeal to my fellow divers to take action. I reached out to the local divers, who immediately started supporting me. The following months saw us collecting pieces of plastic that we saw floating past and putting them in the pocket of our diving suits. If we were walking along the beach, we made sure to collect all the plastic that we saw on the sand. The effects were noticeable almost immediately. I could see the beach returning to its original beauty. However, I knew that these individual actions weren’t enough to stop the concerning plastic pollution crisis unless companies stopped producing so much plastic in the first place.
I decided to take it a step further to try and stop those companies producing single-use plastics. One way in particular stood out because it was easy to implement, yet its effects would be far reaching. Whenever I found a piece of branded plastic waste in the ocean, on a river bank or beach, I took a picture of it and posted it to social media, tagged the brand, and used the hashtag IsThisYours Since I started this approach, I have reached out to a dozen companies in this way and got more and more enthusiastic followers. We may be limited in what we can do, but I believe that a single spark can start a prairie fire.

A Simple Lesson
“Another bad day at school ” my father asked as I came into the room.
“How could you tell I didn't shut the door heavily or anything,” I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room ever time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house.
“I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough,” Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. “What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends.”
“You don't know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won't even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that's the worst!”
Papa turned toward me. "Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo "
“Yes, your name is David and grandfather's name is Lorenzo.”
“Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important ”
“He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that,” I answered.

“Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are,” said Papa.

Thanks to its harsh environment, Antarctica remained largely untouched by humans for many millennia (千年), allowing a thriving ecosystem to evolve. However, since the 1990s, the last true wilderness on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for adventure-seeking tourists. Now, a new study declares that the visitors may be leaving behind harmful bacteria which could devastate all of the area’s native bird population.
Humans can infect animals with illnesses such as the flu. Researchers, however, believed that the Antarctic animals were immune to the danger due to the continent’s extreme weather. However, microbiologist Marta Cerda-Cuellar was not convinced. She and some colleagues decided to examine waste samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves.
The results of their study revealed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste. This included a common strain (品种) of bacteria that causes food poisoning in humans. The researchers say the bacteria strains were resistant to commonly-used human antibiotics, indicating they were brought in by the visitors, rather than migratory birds.
“These strains, which are a common cause for infections in humans and livestock, do not usually cause death outbreaks in wild animals,” says Gonzalez Solis. “However, the emerging of invasive pathogens (病原体) that arrive to highly sensitive populations could have severe consequences and cause the local collapse and extinction of some populations.” The researcher also fears the presence of these bugs could foreshadow (预示) the arrival of other, more deadly, pathogens as the number of tourists people increases.
Experts believe the only way to prevent the mass destruction of the birds is to impose stricter regulations or, at least, put the ones already in place into effect. For example, while the Antarctica Treaty requires visitors to carry their waste back home to safeguard the pristine (原始纯净的) environment, the regulation is rarely enforced. Fortunately, nowadays some officials are taking steps to save the vulnerable birds before it’s too late.

One of the most stressful days of Susan McFrederick’s life was watching her son get wheeled away for surgery hours after he was born in 2011.

三、七选五阅读(本大题共1小题)
It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past. 33
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention. 34 Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories. 35 The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: 36 She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
37 This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked — to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.
A.Familiarity is important.
B.Music itself is easy to remember.
C.But what makes music so effective in doing this
D.Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E.This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F.Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.
G.Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.

二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
Online education has grown fast over the past ten years. The explosion of technology has made teaching outside the traditional classroom possible for teachers and has provided learners with easy access to course materials. Its attractiveness, benefits, and challenges are addressed.
In April, 2005, I was approached by a student who was interested in our doctoral program. However, the first question out of her mouth was, “Do you offer any online courses ” Later that day, as I was reading the conference program guide trying for interesting presentations, I noticed many workshops on web-based learning and online education. I later attended two of those workshops and met several professors from different universities who had either taught online courses for quite some time or who were discovering the best practice for teaching online. These experiences helped me realize at least to some extent the degree of growth in online education.
My responsibilities for the term included gaining more understanding of online education. Consequently, I made several attempts to enrich my knowledge of distance learning and online teaching. I consulted with my colleagues who were teaching online courses. This helped me recognize the importance of getting materials prepared even before the start of a term. I also learned that online courses may consume more time than regular classroom teaching. And I attended several workshops regarding online education and established a network with those who were involved in online programs at other universities. I will consider these people as my consultants as I begin to design my own online course. Also, I conducted a brief survey with 15 students and two faculty members who had taken or taught an online course before to understand their experience. Eventually I completed a literature review which gave me the foundation and the background of understanding the need for online education.

Howard Carter Finds King Tut's Tomb
Howard Carter was only 17 years old when he first went to Egypt in 1891. His father was quite successful as a portrait painter in England. Howard had a great deal of artistic talent, but he did not want to become a portrait painter like his father. He wanted adventure. With his father's help, he got a job with an archaeologist who was on his way to Egypt. This was an exciting opportunity for young Howard Carter.
In Egypt, Howard Carter worked as an artist for some of the best Egyptologists(埃及古 物学者)of his time. An Egyptologist is an archaeologist whose focus is learning about ancient Egypt. It was not long before Howard Carter was quite well known among Egyptologists, not only as an artist but also for his knowledge about ancient Egypt and archaeology.
Howard Carter wanted to hunt for King Tut's tomb, but that took men and money. Howard Carter finally got lucky. Lord Carnarvon was a very rich man. Lord Carnarvon allowed Howard Carter to hire 50 men to help him search for Tut's tomb.
In November 1922, by the light of a candle, Howard Carter cut a hole in a secret door. Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter carefully looked through the hole. What they saw through the peephole(窥视孔)) was amazing! They could not believe their eyes! The room was filled with treasures—couches shaped like animals, jeweled chests, vases, statues, and even chariots(二轮战车),all glittering with gold. It took months to move the treasures they found in the first room alone before they could open the doors in that room that led to other rooms! In other rooms, they found the chair King Tut had used as a small child.
The tomb was an incredible discovery, not only for its monetary value but also for its history. Historians learned so much about the people who lived over 3,000 years ago, about their culture and beliefs and daily life, from the objects found in King Tut's tomb. Howard Carter became world famous.

Growing up, Deka Ismail says she let labels define what she could be. “I was a black girl, from a refugee (难民) family,” Deka said. “It was as if I was only allowed to explore in this predetermined box.”
After a high school chemistry class inspired her to think about a career in science and gave her confidence in the field, Deka learned to live outside labels and began making big plans for her future. Now she is about to begin her freshman year at the University of California, planning to become a professor.
Bom and raised in San Diego’s City Heights neighbourhood, Deka is the daughter of a Somali refugee couple. While some might say Delta’s success happened in spite of her background, she would say differently, that her experiences shaped her and inspired her to be the driven, young scientist that she is today.
When Deka was eight years old, her mother got a job by studying hard back in school in order to support the whole family. That made Deka realize that education could make a difference to one’s life. She spent a lot of time in the library reading books, and didn’t do many of the things her peers did, like partying or having romantic relationships.
“I always felt like I had to be the perfect girl for my family,” Deka said. “You have to not even do your best but two times better than everyone else. I felt like the whole world was waiting for me to mess up.”
Delta’s efforts paid off. The summer before her senior year of high school, she was accepted to the American Chemical Society Project SEED Programme. “She brought both enthusiasm and focus,” Botham, a researcher at this research institute, recalled. “She arrived every day ready to work, ready to learn and ready to tackle new challenges regardless of whether or not she had done anything similar.”
When asked what advice she would give to others like her, Deka warned them not to underestimate themselves. “Don’t tell yourself that the scholarship is too big or this programme is too competitive or I'll never get into this school,” she said. “I was not sure whether I could make it until I started seeing the acceptance letters rolling in.”

James T.Green thought he was suffering a panic attack.
He took a break from work to walk around the block during a stressful day, and noticed he felt out of breath walking up a slight slope.“This isn't normal,” Green thought. He had become a regular biker in recent months and wasn't exactly out of shape. He sat down at his desk, and looked at the smartwatch on his wrist. His heart rate went through the roof, and the Heart Watch app he was using to check his pulse (脉搏) was flashing warnings. Maybe it was something more serious, he thought.
Although he had blood clots (血凝块) in his lungs a few years ago, he had been on medication, and doctors said that it was an unusual condition for someone in their mid twenties.Still, the symptoms (症状) this time were much less serious, and he was feeling stressed, so his mind didn't automatically jump to blood clots. Green's doctor told him it sounded like anxiety. But then he showed her his heart rate recorded by the smartwatch.
“This is my normal heart rate,” Green told her, pointing to the graph in the app.“This is where my heart rate is now. There's something wrong.”
The doctor ordered a CT scan. The blood clots in his left lung had returned. An ambulance rushed Green to the emergency room, where he was pumped full of blood thinners. He didn't need surgery this time, but doctors told him that if he had waited, a clot could have killed him.
Green isn't the only person who has discovered a serious health condition after seeing heart rate data on a smartwatch. And he won't be the last. Presently, smartwatches from Apple to Fitbit and others can tell you your heart rate and track your workouts. But these companies want to go beyond the basics by developing ways to tell you when something is wrong. In fact, it's already happening.

Nobody believed that I would be able to pull through. But,to everyone’s amazement (and even my own),I won!And then I won again the following year in 2022!While the grand prize was welcomed, the satisfaction of knowing I was a champion of something I loved doing and was good at was reward enough.

Plastic-Eating Worms
Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste(糊状物) and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass — apparently broken down by enzymes(酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.
Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food — beeswax — also allows them to break down plastic. “Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well,” she explains, “The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond.”
Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)
Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process — not simply “millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic.”
20. What can we learn about the worms in the study
A.They take plastics as their everyday food.
B.They are newly evolved creatures.
C.They can consume plastics.
D.They wind up in landfills.
21. According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to _______.

[甘肃酒泉四校2024高二联考]The future of space exploration may depend on an art form from the past: origami (折纸艺术), the ancient art of paper folding.
Researchers from Washington State University (WSU), US have used origami to possibly solve the problem of storing and moving fuel to rocket engines, a key challenge in space travel, according to Newswise. They’ve developed a foldable plastic fuel “bladder (囊状物) “resistant to super cold temperatures, which could be used to store and pump fuel in spacecrafts of the future. Their findings have recently been published in the journal Cryogenics.
“Folks have been trying to make bags for rocket fuel for a long time,” said Jake Leachman, one of the lead researchers. “We currently don’t do large-scale and long-duration trips because we can’t store fuel long enough in space.”
Meanwhile, NASA is also looking to paper folding to help observe distant planets. The agency is currently developing Starshade, a foldable, sunflower-shaped piece of hardware that would help block starlight and enable telescopes to view distant objects more clearly in space.
“A huge part of my job is looking at something on paper and asking, ‘Can we fly this ’” Manan Arya, a technologist in California, said. “Once I realized this is how you fold spacecraft structures, I became interested in origami. I realized I was good at it and enjoyed it. Now, I fold constantly.”
Using origami for space purposes isn’t new, however. Solar arrays (太阳能阵列), experimental wings for space shuttle programs and an inflatable satellite were also inspired by origami in both past and present space projects.
“With most origami, the magic comes from the folding,” Robert Salazar, who helped design the Starshade and now works on the Transformers project, said in a statement. “There are so many patterns to still be explored.”
24.What is one of the features of the “bladder”
A.It can help store solar energy.
B.It is made of a few kinds of metal.
C.It can resist extreme cold temperatures.
D.It can adjust temperatures in a spaceship.
25.Why can’t people take large-scale and long-duration trips into space
A.On account of energy problems.
B.Owing to lack of oxygen in space.
C.Due to great changes of temperatures.
D.Because of the driving force of rockets.
26.Why are solar arrays and experimental wings for space shuttle programs spoken of in paragraph 6
A.They need to be improved.
B.Origami was the inspiration for them, too.
C.There is much more to be explored in space.
D.They belonged to quite advanced technology then.
27.Which can serve as the best title for the text
A.Key challenge in space exploration
B.Past and present space projects
C.Folding for space exploration
D.Ancient art of paper folding
One of the most stressful days of Susan McFrederick’s life was watching her son get wheeled away for surgery hours after he was born in 2011.
But after the operation, Susan burst into tears for a different reason: across the cut on their newborn sons back was a sweet winter scene, hand-drawn on his bandages(绷带).

Most kids want superheroes sports team logos or princesses, while babies often receive scenes with flowers trees and sea creatures During the last 30 years, Parry estimates he has left examples of his handiwork over the stitches(伤口缝线) of more than 10, 000 children.
“During a time of stress for families, it's nice to be able to help them smile and laugh," Parry said. This is something positive that I can do for them, which is what I like most about it.”
For Parry, the reward is knowing he hopefully made a difference in a child’s life, and except for his drawings on bandages, they can go on and live their lives and never know I was in it.” he said.
He's not ready to retire, but he's found a new hobby to keep his hands skillful in the years to come.

“Would you like to stay and listen to the performance ” Martha asked Lily. Lilly hesitated for a moment but quickly nodded. She realized this unexpected incident could possibly bring her more joy than that any planned outing could have brought. As the first notes of the band’s tune filled the air, Martha pointed out her granddaughter, who looked as determined as her grandmother. A sweet melody filling the air, Martha closed her eyes, lost in the sound. Lilly watched, feeling a warmth in her heart as she witnessed Martha’s love for her granddaughter and her passion for music.
As the concert drew to a close, Martha opened her eyes and turned to Lilly. “Thank you for today, Lilly. You’ve made an old lady very happy,” she said, her voice soft yet filled with sincerity. Lily responded, “It was my pleasure, Martha. Today was a wonderful surprise for me too.” They exchanged smiles. Lily’s original plans were missed, but in return, she felt a sense of fulfillment, gaining something far more valuable—a reminder of the beauty of kindness, the power of music, and the unexpected friendships that can arise in the most ordinary circumstances.

二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
[黑龙江哈尔滨九中2021高二月考]My brush was tiny, more like something you'd use for nail polish. That was suitable because I was struggling to paint the toenails of my dragon shadow puppet (皮影戏偶). Mao Zhongbo, our teacher, noticed my struggle and showed me how to keep my brush from becoming overloaded with pigment (颜料). It was an unexpected personal touch from the resident master at a Beijing hotel.
Shichahai Shadow Art Performance Hotel is a step back in time. Surrounded by a forest of skyscrapers, this little inn is in a hutong. Once you open its massive wooden doors, you enter a calm space that directs your gaze to the framed shadow puppet arts that decorate the walls. The mission here is clear: to educate guests about a dying part of Chinese culture before it's too late.
I visited here last winter. As a theatre lover, I hoped to get a behind the scenes look at a completely different performing art. The inn provides English interpreters who help make the cultural offerings accessible to its foreign guests. These include performances in the private puppet theatre at the hotel and several classes taught by master Mao.
One night, I watched Mao and several other hotel employees perform the classic tale “Turtle and Crane”. The animals' flexible movements made me forget that puppeteers controlled them. Afterwards, I tried my hand at controlling the many sticks needed to make each puppet move effortlessly. My awkward attempts to operate several sticks at once showed why it takes years to master something that looks simple.
I asked Mao whether anyone could learn to be a shadow puppet performer. He paused, and then answered, “Like ballet, some have a talent for this and some don't. Making a puppet that seems real comes from the hands, the heart and the brain. It also needs passion.”
At the end of my stay, I went to the lobby to get my dragon shadow puppet. I noticed Mao giving a class to a group of local youngsters, confirming me in my belief that he would inspire a new generation of masters.

Unlike many other exchange programmes, my school focused on arts such as singing, acting, dancing, and many other talents, so there wasn't much room for sports. Honestly, in the beginning, I was a little sad because I wanted to participate in basketball. However, I did not let that disappoint me. After a while, I took a pause for some self-reflection. I remembered how much I like to sing even though I don't think I'm good at it. I then thought to myself, “Why not be the one to try acting?”
After my first week, I loved the school! My art classes feel like a break from reality and the scenery at my school makes me feel as though I am in some talent-based American high school movies. Every morning, we are welcomed with the beautiful voices from my teachers. At lunch, we are entertained with musical performances by any student who wishes to sing.
During my second week of school, I was required to perform my first five-minute play with my class partner. I was a bit nervous, but I gathered courage and did it. By chance, a staff person from the school office saw my performance. After school, on my way to the bus, she called me and informed me she had recommended me and some other students to participate in an upcoming two-day workshop. I first thought she was teasing me. When I got home, I found out she'd also sent an email to my host mum.
My host mum is very busy, but she planned her schedule around the activity. She picked me up from school and drove me to the workshop which was an hour's drive from my school. After the workshop, we were presented with tickets to watch the play the following day. After the show, I met with the actors, thanked and congratulated them. Florida shores may soon become a bit safer thanks to the creativity of 13-year-old Kaial Hajik in Panama City Beach. After hearing of several drownings(溺亡) in the Gulf of Mexico over the past few years, Kaial worked with his father Joe Hajik to design an emergency kit prototype(急救套装原型) called the LifeBoKx.
The LifeBoKx includes basic life-saving equipment(装备) and educational materials to be positioned along the shoreline of Panama City Beach. The emergency kit includes two life jackets and visual aids(直观教具) including the “Drowning Chain of Survival”, a visual representation from the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) telling how to safely behave when drowning.
Kaial and his father said the story of Richard Stacey Redman made them want to create the LifeBoKx. Redman drowned on Panama City Beach in 2019 trying to save a drowning child. “It's not just people drowning. It's actually the people who work to help save these people that are losing their lives,” Joe Hajik said.
The LifeBoKx is just an idea for now, but the father-son team imagines placing the emergency kits throughout the Panama City Beach shoreline.
Wil Spivey is the director of the newly created Beach Safety unit. Kaial and Joe Hajik presented the LifeBoKx to Spivey and his team. When asked about the prototype, Spivey said, “Our main feeling is that we just thought it was really exceptional—that a young man saw a need or problem in his community and tried to take action and stand up and do something meaningful about it.”
Spivey said his team supported Hajik and offered suggestions. The LifeBoKx could not stand as a replacement to lifeguards and trained emergency responders but Spivey said it offered some useful tools, particularly the educational materials and the possibility to help the progress of emergency response.
24.What do we know about the LifeBoKx
A.It is supported by the ILS.
B.It has been used across the world.
C.It provides some life-saving equipment.
D.It was created to teach children to swim.
25.What mainly encouraged the father-son team to make the LifeBoKx
A.The increasing number of drownings in their country.
B.Redman's story of being drowned.
C.Kaial's experience of drowning.
D.Their shared love of creating.
26.How is the LifeBoKx
A.It is still in development.
B.It has gotten many orders.
C.It is popular among children.
D.It has not been accepted by officials.
27.What did Spivey think of the LifeBoKx
A.He didn't think it was creative.
B.He doubted that it would be useful.
C.He thought it might replace lifeguards one day.
D.He thought it might speed up emergency response.

[北京西城区2022高二期末]We often work to save the most charismatic (有超凡魅力的) species in the world. Is it time to think beyond pandas and tigers
Take a good look at the American burying beetle. Today it is assessed as critically endangered. Like the tiger, the beetle is decreasing in number. The tiger is an instantly recognisable symbol of species conservation, but most people aren't familiar with the beetle.
This phenomenon is called the domination of flagship species—charismatic creatures such as tigers organisations use to increase support and funding for conservation. That's largely because humans are attracted to large bodied animals with forward facing eyes and human like traits that make such species more relatable. As a result, many less well known organisms fail to get the support and funding to ensure their survival even though they play an important role in the ecosystem.
Which species could be saved They may not charm us with fuzzy paws and puppy dog eyes, but many ignored species deserve some love. The world needs to better recognise the contributions of these underdogs rather than “only spending money on cool species,” says University of Kent conservationist Bob Smith.
I suspect that most of us who care about creatures could agree on this: Charisma is in the eye of the beholder. In that case, can't we broaden the list of species considered popular and even beautiful Smith says we can—and there's a name for them: Cinderella species. These are mostly threatened species that are still very popular with the public yet are typically overlooked as flagships. Smith is convinced that “less well known and less popular species can still be good flagships with more marketing effort”.
In a recent study, Smith settled another myth about poster animals that they don't help publicise the world's most species rich and threatened places. A prioritisation (优先次序) model Smith created showed that hot spots of the most important conservation worldwide also are home to more than 500 flagship and Cinderella species, and that drawing more attention to Cinderella species could boost funding and public campaigns for habitat protection.
Let's be clear, though: It's still OK to root__for pandas and tigers. “The reason I got into conservation is that I liked these species,” Smith says. “That is fair enough. But it's our job as conservationists to try to inspire people to love other species too.”
28.According to the passage, why are people unfamiliar with the American burying beetle
A.It is critically endangered. B.It is decreasing in number.
C.It is not a flagship species. D.It is not instantly recognisable.
29.What can we learn from the passage
A.Cinderella species have made threatened species well known.
B.Cinderella species are popular but ignored as endangered animals.
C.Flagship species have raised enough funds for endangered organisms.
D.Flagship species and Cinderella species usually live in the same areas.
30.What does the underlined phrase “root for” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Take control of. B.Get close to.
C.Show support for. D.Check up on.
31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.It's Time to Study Cinderella Species
B.Who Should Decide Which Species to Save
C.Do Flagship Species Help or Hurt Conservation
D.Conservation Can't Just Be a Popularity Contest

Your immune system is the body’s personal army. 32 A healthy immune system can defeat invading disease-causing germs(病菌), such as bacteria, viruses, parasites-as well as cancer cells-while protecting healthy tissue.
33 The body’s natural barriers against disease-causing germs-for example, our skin, the hairs in our nose, and the acid in our stomachs-are part of our innate immune systems. Innate immunity is the immune system that you inherit and it’s active as soon as you’re born. 34 Instead, it attacks broadly, which is why it is unable to get rid of all germs.
The immune system also learns things-this is called adaptive immunity. When your immune system is exposed to a new germ for the first time, it responds by trying to fight it off-which means you may become sick. 35
Experience makes your immune system stronger. The first time your body comes into contact with a certain type of germ, your immune system response may take a while. You might need several days to make and use all the germ-fighting parts you need to get rid of your infection. It takes time to hack the germ’s code and destroy it. 36 Mission accomplished!
A.It does not recognize specific bacteria or viruses.
B.It releases white blood cells and other chemicals that destroy these threats.
C.It is a vast and complex interconnected network of many different organs, cells and proteins that work together to protect the body from illness.
D.The main feature of the innate immune system is to respond quickly, which can lead to fever.
E.But afterward, the immune cells will remember the invader and be better equipped to fight it, should it return.
F.The system has two types of response: innate(先天性反应) and adaptive.
G.If you come across that same germ later on, your body will remember and fight it off faster, so you can get over the infection and feel better.

The skies were dark. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies, I shivered (瑟瑟发抖) with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely covered by the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags and rushing home. I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and blocks of metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned hack and went back to the place which the sounds came from. I was horrified! To my worry, I found that two small children had fallen into the gaping hole (漏洞) on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the children as it was dark all around me. I told them that I was going to get help and ran away.
I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help. I knew the man, Mr Lee, who lived there. I called Mr Lee and told him about the problem. He readily said that he would get a torch (手电筒) and some rope. He also called his good friend Encik Ahmad to come along with him. A few other neighbors also quickly joined the rescue party and together went to the rood. They managed to get the children out of the watery hole safely. The children were very scared and they shivered with cold.
