The concept of cardinal numbers
We use cardinal numbers to count things.
1. People from about 180 countries and areas live
in New York.
2. The CN Tower is 1,815 feet tall.
3. Red Square in Moscow is about 91,000 square
metres in size.
4. France has an area of over 26,000 square miles.
5. There are about 8,000,000 people living in London.
6. Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has over 13,000,000

The formation of cardinal numbers
20~90为其对应个位数单词(或变形)后加-ty:

When we say thirteen, we stress the second syllable. When we say thirty, we stress the first syllable.

表示事物编号:Room 105(105房间);Lesson One (第一课);Bus No.10 (10路公共汽车)。

数学运算:Two and three is five. (二加三等于五)。
The usage of cardinal numbers
1) hundred, thousand, million, billion这些词前面若有表示具体数字的词时,它们不能加“s”,反之要加“s”,并与of短语连用。

2) 年份用基数词表示,分两位一读,年份前面用介词in。

The concept of ordinal numbers
1) 一般来说,是由相应的基数词加词尾th构成。

2) 有些基数词在变为序数词时,有特殊的变化。

3) 十位整数序数词的构成方法是将基数词的词尾y变成i,然后再加eth。

4) 两位或两位以上的基数词变成序数词时,仅将个位数变成序数词。

Work out the rule
We form most ordinal numbers by adding ____ to the cardinal numbers, except first, second and third. For numbers of 21 and above, the ordinal number is formed based on the last digit (21st, 22nd, 23rd, etc.).

基变序,有规律,词尾加上th。一二三特殊记,词尾字母t,d,d。八加h,九减e,ve要用f替。ty要变tie,然后再加th。若是遇上几十几,只变个位就可以。
The usage of ordinal numbers
表示顺序:常与定冠词“the”连用。the first day of the month (这个月的第一天);the second chapter (第二章);the third floor (三楼);on his fourteenth birthday (在他十四岁生日那天)。
表示日期:June 1st (六月一日),读作“June the first”;in the twenty-first century (在21世纪)
用于最高级前加强语气:He is the second tallest boy in our class. (他是我们班第二高的男孩)。
分数表达:分子用基数词,分母用序数词。当分子大于1时,分母用复数。one fifth (五分之一);two thirds (三分之二)。
1) 序数词前面通常要加定冠词the,但当序数词作定语修饰名词且前面有形容词性物主代词或名词所有格时,the可以省略。

2) 日期可以用基数词或序数词来表示。读时前面要加定冠词the,日期前面要用介词on。

3) 编号可以用基数词或序数词来表示。序数词位于名词之前,前面要加定冠词the,而基数词位于名词之后,且名词和基数词的首字母都要大写。
