例3 (2023年安徽省职教高考真题)A global survey has found that people who live in cities have better hearing than those who live in quiet villages, and scientists now believe that the ear needs exercise to keep in shape.
A team of scientists at the University of Giessen,Germany, has spent over ten years testing the hearing of more than 10,000 people around the world. As expected, people exposed(暴露) to very loud noises at work, such as construction workers, had poor hearing. But the hearing of those living in the quiet countryside, such as farmers, was just as bad.Orchestral(管弦乐的) musicians and airline pilots, however, can usually hear well although exposed to noise at work. And there is little difference between people who go to noisy concerts and those who do not.
Hearing experts have long believed that long-time exposure to excessively(过 度地) loud noise degrades hearing and so industrial standards are based on people’s average exposure to sound energy. However,it is the very sudden strong noises that do the most damage, while exposure to continual noise “trains” the ear to put up with it.

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason,a volunteer, said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer.Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations(期望).Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly.Don’t add too much pressure.Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
★ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot,and he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally,it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.

Passage 7
After my family moved to America,I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly.I told her that I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感的) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”.I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences,so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old.Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience.Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However,in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young.I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
