Ⅰ.主题语篇阅读(共8小题;每小题2.5分,满分20分)
A
(2025·福建福州高二上期中)
Chicken is one of the most popular foods in the world today, with more than one billion birds cooked every year in the UK alone. It was previously believed that chickens were raised for the table up to 10,000 years ago,but the new report, published in the journal Antiquity, suggests humans did not come into close contact with chickens until about 1500 BCE.The researchers used carbon dating(碳定年法) to establish the age of 23 of the earliest chickens found in western Eurasia and north-west Africa. Most of the bones were far more recent than previously thought.
Chickens, native to the tropical jungles(热带丛林) of south-east Asia, did not arrive in Europe until about 800 BCE.Then, after arriving in the Mediterranean region,it took almost 1,000 years for chickens to be established in the colder climates of Scotland,Ireland,Scandinavia and Iceland.
The experts re-evaluated chicken remains found in more than 600 sites in 89 countries. They found that the oldest bones of a definite domestic chicken were at the Neolithic Ban Non Wat in central Thailand, dating to between 1650 BCE and 1250 BCE.Researchers say that humans came into contact with the jungle birds during dry rice farming. The ancient ancestors of domestic chickens were attracted down from the trees by the rice.
Prof Greger Larson, from the University of Oxford, said,“This comprehensive re-evaluation of chickens firstly demonstrates how wrong our understanding of the time and place of chicken domestication was.And even more excitingly,we show how the arrival of dry rice agriculture acted as a catalyst(催化剂) for both the chicken-domestication process and its global spread.”
Previous research showed that chickens were not initially domesticated for food, but as exotica(奇异事物).Earlier studies have found that chickens appeared to be respected in the Iron Age,for example, and were often buried whole with their hens or sometimes even with their human owners.Chickens and their eggs began to be popularised as food during the Roman Empire.
1.What does the new report show

Food is extremely important to us human beings and rice is one kind of the main food in the world.Australian researchers have discovered a way to genetically engineer rice which would provide significant health benefits to more than half the world’s population.
A study undertaken at the University of Tasmania, published in a respected journal of the National Academy of Sciences, discovered a method to increase the resistant starch(抗性淀粉) content in rice, making it more digestible and leading to lower rate of diabetes(糖尿病) and overweight.
Steven Smith, the lead author of the study and a foreign expert for the Chinese government who has been appointed to work on crop improvement projects by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said increasing the higher resistant starch content gave this “designer” rice many added health benefits.“We have discovered that we can increase the amount of resistant starch in cooked rice, which could provide health benefits for a large number of people in Asia and beyond,” Smith said in a media release on Friday.“The same approach can be adapted for use in other cereals, including wheat. Not only can it have benefits for diabetes and obesity, but also for disorders of the bowel(肠) including cancer.”
Rice is the main food for more than half the world’s population, providing much of the world with most of their calories.Smith said that as the rate of diabetes and obesity in Asian countries continued to grow, his “designer” rice could provide a way to limit health problems.
“Not only does resistant starch reduce the possibility of a ‘sugar hit’ but it also reduces the appetite and promotes the growth of the healthy germs,” Smith said.
Smith divides his time between the University of Tasmania and his research lab in Beijing where he hopes to make significant advance in sustainable living.
