We are calling for articles about famous people around the world. Write an encyclopaedia entry and send it to us.
While writing
1 Wang Yao drew a mind map before she wrote an encyclopaedia entry about a scientist she admires. Look at the mind map and label the parts of the entry.
Yuan Longping
Yuan Longping (1930-2021) was a Chinese
agricultural scientist. He was born in Beijing.
Yuan spent his whole life developing different
kinds of hybrid rice. These new types of
plants can produce much more rice than
traditional ones. Yuan’s work has helped feed people in China and many other parts of the world. Farmers in a lot of countries now grow his hybrid rice.
Yuan won many awards for his research. He received the Medal of the Republic, one of China’s highest honours, in 2019. People call him the “Father of Hybrid Rice”.

Tu Youyou
Tu Youyou was born on December 30,
1930, in Ningbo, China. She is a famous
pharmaceutical chemist.
Her greatest achievement is discovering artemisinin, a medicine that effectively treats malaria and has saved countless lives.
For her groundbreaking work, she won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, becoming the first Chinese Nobel laureate in this field. She also received the Lasker Award and was honored as a “People’s Scientist” by China.

The ostrich
Many animals are very special. The ostrich is one of them. It’s the largest of all birds on Earth. It is about 2.7 metres tall and can be up to 135 kilograms in weight. Ostriches’ wings are so small that they can not fly.
However, they are good at running because their legs are long and strong. They can even run 60 kilometres an hour. Ostriches feed on grass, leaves and insects. They live in great holes in the desert of Africa, so they show ability to live without drinking water for a long time.
