The value of our heritage
There are certain things on the Earth that we must not lose.The great animal migration① across the plains of the Serengeti or the towering pyramids of Egypt are such examples.Every country can be proud of its cultural or natural heritage sites,which must be protected,so that we can enjoy them today and allow future generations to know where they come from.We are lucky to have UNESCO to oversee such an important task.It sees heritage as “our legacy② from the past,what we live with today,and what we pass on to future generations” as well as “irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration”.
The incredible splendour③ of heritage sites is a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man.As a national park and nature reserve④,Jiuzhaigou Valley,just north of the Sichuan Basin⑤,is home to mighty snow-capped mountains,thick forests alive with wildlife,impressive waterfalls and lakes so blue that they take our breath away.This dreamlike scenery makes us realize that nature has truly created a masterpiece.Similarly,standing in the shadow of the Borobudur Temple,as the sun rises over this grand historic building,we are impressed with the effort,determination and intense⑥ belief of the people who built it with only primitive⑦ tools.It is in places like these that we cannot help but be humbled⑧,come to understand our limitations as human beings,and know that our duty is to protect them for future generations.
Heritage sites not only often provide answers to questions,but also often pose questions to which there are no definitive answers at the moment.They do,however,provide us with opportunities to wonder,to be inspired and to think more deeply about our time on the Earth.As Cicero remarked,“To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.”

As a kid,Pamela Akuku spent her weekends exploring the National Museums of Kenya,following along with her mom who worked there.Akuku became fascinated with the researchers.She saw them using various equipment and researching the fossils carefully.“But I didn’t know what they were doing at the time,” she says.“I kept asking my mom about it.”
Akuku’s mom saw her daughter’s curiosity and signed her up for the museum’s Young Researchers Club.Akuku soon took part in mock excavations (模拟挖掘) and reconstructed bones.“I enjoyed reading and puzzles,” says Akuku.“And this was a mixture of the two.”
The museum experiences helped inspire her career as an archeologist.After her four years in university,she was sure that she wanted to study archaeology.She did her master’s in South Africa and majored in zooarchaeology (动物考古学).She is now at the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona,Spain.There,she studies how ancient humans modified (改良) animal bones.Her research is helping to reveal more about where early humans lived.She’s currently studying the remains from Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge,where researchers previously discovered stone tools and evidence of early human ancestors going back as far as 2 million years.
Akuku gives some advice to people who want to do her job.“Be prepared to come across hard conditions.Working in this field is challenging.You have to work twice as hard just to be recognized,” Akuku said.But she has learned to deal with it.Now she always tells everyone the efforts are worthy.

Njobati,a young woman from Cameroon,faced a challenging journey when she moved from her English-speaking area to a French-speaking area of the country to attend university.The sharp differences between these areas,once part of the British and French empires,made it difficult for her to fit in,which led her to examine her own identity—who she truly was.
Seeking guidance,she turned to her grandfather who also felt disconnected from his own culture.He expressed sadness about what the Nso had lost both culturally and materially,including Ngonnso statue.Ngonnso was the founder of Nso dating back to the 14th Century,whose statue was an important cultural symbol for the Nso.However,it was taken by the Germans in 1902 and has been housed in Berlin’s Ethnological Museum ever since.
Inspired by her grandfather’s desire and saddened by the loss of culture,Njobati made a promise to bring back the statue.She believed it would not only achieve her grandfather’s wish but connect her with her Nso heritage again.
Njobati did many researches about the statue and former unsuccessful attempts.She realized that restitution (归还) was actually about facing the colonial (殖民主义的) past.Njobati decided to try differently.To gather support online and offline,Njobati began a grassroots campaign.She organized meetings in community halls and churches,met people one-on-one,and used the power of social media.Through social media,she established contact with the Ethnological Museum.
Njobati’s tireless efforts paid off.She was told that a decision about Ngonnso statue was coming,which was an important moment for her.
“Finally,this is happening.Not just for me,but for the Nso people,and for Cameroon,” She cried.“This also lends a hand to other communities that are seeking justice for stolen culture relics.”

As a kid,Pamela Akuku spent her weekends exploring the National Museums of Kenya,following along with her mom who worked there.Akuku became fascinated with the researchers.She saw them using various equipment and researching the fossils carefully.“But I didn’t know what they were doing at the time,” she says.“I kept asking my mom about it.”
Akuku’s mom saw her daughter’s curiosity and signed her up for the museum’s Young Researchers Club.Akuku soon took part in mock excavations (模拟挖掘) and reconstructed bones.“I enjoyed reading and puzzles,” says Akuku.“And this was a mixture of the two.”
The museum experiences helped inspire her career as an archeologist.After her four years in university,she was sure that she wanted to study archaeology.She did her master’s in South Africa and majored in zooarchaeology (动物考古学).She is now at the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona,Spain.There,she studies how ancient humans modified (改良) animal bones.Her research is helping to reveal more about where early humans lived.She’s currently studying the remains from Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge,where researchers previously discovered stone tools and evidence of early human ancestors going back as far as 2 million years.
Akuku gives some advice to people who want to do her job.“Be prepared to come across hard conditions.Working in this field is challenging.You have to work twice as hard just to be recognized,” Akuku said.But she has learned to deal with it.Now she always tells everyone the efforts are worthy.

Njobati,a young woman from Cameroon,faced a challenging journey when she moved from her English-speaking area to a French-speaking area of the country to attend university.The sharp differences between these areas,once part of the British and French empires,made it difficult for her to fit in,which led her to examine her own identity—who she truly was.
Seeking guidance,she turned to her grandfather who also felt disconnected from his own culture.He expressed sadness about what the Nso had lost both culturally and materially,including Ngonnso statue.Ngonnso was the founder of Nso dating back to the 14th Century,whose statue was an important cultural symbol for the Nso.However,it was taken by the Germans in 1902 and has been housed in Berlin’s Ethnological Museum ever since.

Njobati did many researches about the statue and former unsuccessful attempts.She realized that restitution (归还) was actually about facing the colonial (殖民主义的) past.Njobati decided to try differently.To gather support online and offline,Njobati began a grassroots campaign.She organized meetings in community halls and churches,met people one-on-one,and used the power of social media.Through social media,she established contact with the Ethnological Museum.
Njobati’s tireless efforts paid off.She was told that a decision about Ngonnso statue was coming,which was an important moment for her.
“Finally,this is happening.Not just for me,but for the Nso people,and for Cameroon,” She cried.“This also lends a hand to other communities that are seeking justice for stolen culture relics.”
