I began learning playing the violin when I was nine, and the next year I began studying under Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.

Mrs Ghent came to comfort me.Then she told us a good concert was coming, and she hoped I would go there with her. I remember that the concert was on my birthday in March. It was great, because it was Mischa Elman’s concert in the city concert hall. Mischa Elman is a famous musician. My teacher decided to buy the best tickets as my birthday present.
The city concert hall is quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in such a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. Mischa Elman’s playing was beautiful. However, Mrs Ghent whispered to me from time to time and told me he had forgotten something or played a wrong note, or had made some other kinds of mistakes.

The photographs that Scilla took as a 16-year-old girl on the streets of London in 1955 stayed largely in her album (相册) over the years. Scilla is now 83, and her self-developed black-and-white photos have been brought back to life after they were discovered by a teenage photographer.
Over the past year, Philip Loveday, 16, has been revisiting his grandmother’s path across the capital to carefully rephotograph the pictures. His journey through time with a camera has been especially moving, because his grandmother, Scilla, has Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) and has lost many of her memories.
Philip took new photos that looked like the ones Scilla took long ago, and put them in a new album. Each page of Scilla’s old album was copied and put in the new one, with Philip’s new photos on the opposite pages. Philip’s mother, Catherine Loveday, said Scilla had been happy with the new album, which had “put her back in her shoes” as a teenager.
Philip said his mother showed him the album she had found at her mother’s house. Greatly absorbed in how modern London would compare to the city photographed by his grandmother, Philip and his mother began to make trips into central London. During the trips, they had the idea of retaking the photos.
Some of the places are similar, like Big Ben. Others show how the city has modernized. Unlike Scilla’s view of St. Paul’s Cathedral from the Thames, Philip’s retake has the Millenium Bridge. When Scilla photographed the John Lewis store on Oxford Street, it was a one-storey building — now it has seven floors. Philip had to use his imagination to recreate other sights. Scilla has repeatedly returned to her new album since receiving it. Philip said: “It’s nice for her to see someone taking an interest in those photos and going back over them, and also good for her to connect her past to where we are now.”
19.What did Philip do for Scilla during the past year
A.He taught her how to use a camera.
B.He took her to visit London streets.
C.He found a new way to treat her disease.
D.He recreated photos of London she had taken.
20.What influence did Philip’s work have on Scilla
A.It inspired her to take photos. B.It made her think of her teenage days.
C.It encouraged her to travel across London. D.It raised her confidence to fight off illness.
21.What does the underlined word “absorbed” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Troubled. B.Interested. C.Experienced. D.Disappointed.
22.What is the best title of this passage
A.A teenager sensed the great changes of London.

C.A teenager and his mother travelled to London for fun.
D.A teenager’s photos helped recover his grandmother’s memory.
A girl is driving with her parents when they spot watercress growing by the side of the road. Her parents stop and take her out of the back seat. They ask her to take off her shoes and roll up her jeans to help them gather it.
It is the beginning of the story in Watercress, a picture book written by Andrea Wang. The story is based on her childhood. “My parents actually spotted watercress growing by the side of the road in Ohio where I grew up,” Wang says. “And I was horribly embarrassed to get out and gather the watercress from the dirty water. It really made me aware of how different I was from my friends. But for my parents, it brought back memories of their home country and it was a connection to their homeland that they had left behind.”
The feeling of being ashamed of our parents is universal. We’ve probably all experienced that at some point. “I remember walking 20 feet behind my parents when we were walking down the street, pretending that I didn’t belong to them,” Wang laughs.
The pictures in Watercress have drawn inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings, which often have mountains covered in clouds. “It always has felt dreamlike to me when I look at those paintings. And I thought it would be nice to bring it into my book because of its theme of memory,” Wang explains.
Unlike the little girl in the story, Andrea Wang didn’t hear any story about her parents’ childhoods until she was an adult. “My parents were trying to protect me, by not telling me the hardships they went through,” Wang says.
But as a kid, Wang remembers feeling disconnected from her history. “I think it’s really important for families to share what they can,” Wang says. “So that kids know that history and can feel a sense of pride in their culture.”
23.How did Andrea Wang feel when she was told to gather watercress
A.Excited. B.Curious. C.Scared. D.Ashamed.
24.What does the word “universal” underlined in paragraph 3 mean
A.Making sb feel a little bit angry. B.Being true at all times and in all places.

Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转 ) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
27.Happiness is for_________.
A.those who have large and beautiful houses B.those who have cars
C.those who have a lot of money D.all people
28.When you do something wrong, _______________.
A.you may correct it B.you will have no chance to challenge yourself
C.anybody will laugh at you D.you will be happy
29.Which is TRUE according to the passage
A.When you get success, your friends will be very proud of you.
B.You can get help from others when you make mistakes.
C.You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.
D.All the above.
30.Why do we say “Happiness is not the same as money” Because ___________.
A.money always brings happiness B.money doesn’t always bring happiness
C.everything can be bought with money D.only rich people have happiness
31.Which is the title of the passage
A.Do Something Good to Others B.Happy and Lucky
C.Happiness D.Life and Success

Mikah Frye, a 9 year old boy, was walking down the streets with his grandmother discussing Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold night. Then he was thinking about a way to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas.
That thought stayed in Mikah Frye’s mind and when he reached home, Mikah told his parents not to buy the Microsoft XBox gaming device he had asked for earlier. Mikah realised that by not buying the $300 device, he could instead donate over 30 blankets to the homeless. He knew how much it meant to be warm in the cold holiday season.
Three years ago, Mikah and his parents were the ones living in a homeless shelter. Having suffered a financial crisis, they too had lost their house, not knowing where their next meal would come from and sharing a blanket every night. Mikah was six years old then but he remembered what it was like to have to give back that precious blanket every morning.
Reaching out to the emergency shelter programme that looked after them 3 years ago, the family donated 60 blankets in the end, each with a personalised message of hope in Mikah’s handwriting stating: “They gave me a blanket, but I had to leave it. That’s why I want you to have your own blanket. Today, I live in my own house, and someday you will too. Your friend, Mikah.”
The homeless people at the shelter may not have been able to give Mikah a Christmas gift in return but his gesture was noted by the billion dollar company Microsoft who made sure that Mikah was fooled into visiting their store so that Santa Claus could personally deliver an XBox from the company to him as a reward for making the top of “Santa’s list of nice boys” that year.

Dear Jim,
Thank you for trusting me and sharing your problems with me.
Spending too much time on social media could have a negative impact on people’s work or study, harm their health, and weaken their social skills. However, it is a widespread phenomenon. You don’t need to worry too much.
Here are some suggestions to help ease your concerns. First, limit the daily time you spend on social media, for example, one hour a day. You can either use an alarm clock or ask your parents to remind you when time is up. Second, find other activities to do in your spare time, such as reading a book, doing some sports, or talking to friends face to face.
Remember, you are in control of your own life. I believe you can use social media wisely.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

Fast fashion has changed the way we dress. We buy more clothes, more often, but wear them less. The average lifespan of a piece of clothing is just two years, and 87 percent of unwanted clothing ends up in landfills or incinerators (焚化炉).
Alina Bassi, founder of Kleiderly, wants to give our clothing waste another chance of a useful life. The 30-year-old chemical engineer has always cared about the threat of climate change—in her teens she made a film highlighting the environmental impact of Heathrow Airport—but she actually started her career in the oil industry. “I learnt so much there, but I knew it wasn't quite right for me,” Bassi says. As a junior engineer, it was difficult to affect change in large corporations and she wanted to make an impact. “I really wanted to work in sustainability (可持续性).”
After a few more years in the energy industry, she landed a job with bio-bean, a company that turned waste coffee grounds from major UK café chains into products that could be burned for heat and fuel. After a year in Berlin as chief operating officer of Kaffeeform, another coffee recycling company, Bassi was eager to step into a different field—used coffee grounds are not the biggest threat faced by the planet. Instead, Bassi wanted to put effort into tackling a much bigger polluter.
Kleiderly hopes to change the landscape of clothing waste. Using the principles of a circular (循环的) economy, Bassi has developed a low-energy, multistage process to turn clothing fibres into an alternative to oil-based plastic. She is reluctant to reveal any further details as the process is still being patented. This plastic can then be fed to manufacturers that can use it in their existing machines, so that your old T-shirts and jeans are reused as brand new products. “I wanted to take the fibres and turn them into something that would be used for many years to come,” Bassi says.

[湖南炎德名校联合体2021高一春季大联考]Students were eating lunch when a fire broke out at Marysville School. The incident left a big mark on students, teachers and parents as they watched the school went up in flames. All the 460 students as well as the 50 staff were left unharmed but after their school was destroyed, they had to move to another building.
Lana Penley, who had started her second year as a headmaster for Marysville, said everyone needed relief from the accident. “We were already a school that struggled, and then adding the fire on top of it, we really thought we needed to find a social and emotional subject that connects to the heart to overcome our psychological damage,” Penley said.
It was after the school opened its doors again that Penley and her staff found a solution in the MindUP programme, founded by actress Goldie Hawn and the Hawn Foundation. MindUp helps kids who are suffering from a high level of stress develop skills they need to grow healthily in a complicated world. Penley used the programme as a way to relieve mental damage from the fire, as well as supporting many of her students who live in poverty.
Even teachers benefited from the programme. Teachers got a “brain break” before staff meetings so they could recharge and focus on the task ahead. MindUp had made all the people in the school become positive.
MindUp is based on research. In a study looking at the positive benefits of the subject, Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, a professor from University of British Columbia, asked fourth and fifth graders about their experience.82% of children said they had a more positive outlook, 81% developed ways to increase their happiness, and 58% of the kids expressed a desire to help their classmates more frequently.

Rosie Dutton, a teacher from Relax Kids in Tamworth, UK, used two apples to show her students the often unseen but harmful effects of school bullying (欺凌).
She posted the lesson on Facebook, where it’s been shared more than 160,000 times.
Rosie Dutton explained that during one of her classes she presented the children with two red apples. What the kids didn’t know was that before the lesson, she had repeatedly dropped one of the apples on the floor. And yet, on the outside at least, both apples looked perfect.
“I picked up the apple I’d dropped on the floor and started to tell the children how I disliked this apple,” Dutton wrote. “I told them that because I didn’t like it, I didn’t want them to like it either, so they should call it names too.” Some of the children looked at her as if she were “crazy”, but the students passed the apple around the circle, calling it names.
Continuing the exercise, the teacher then passed the second apple around the circle. This apple, however, was showered with words like “Your skin is beautiful” and “What a beautiful colour you have”.
Dutton then showed the students both apples once again, stressing that “there was no change, and both apples still looked the same”.
Finally, Dutton cut both apples open. The apple that the class treated kindly looked fresh inside. But the other apple—the one they’d treated poorly—was bruised (碰伤的) beneath its skin.
“I think there was a light bulb moment for the children immediately,” Dutton said. “When people are bullied, especially children, they feel horrible inside and sometimes don’t show or tell others how they are feeling. If we hadn’t cut that apple open, we would never have known how much pain we had caused it.”
Dutton explained how important it is to teach children to stand up for one another, and to stop any form of bullying.
“Let’s create a generation of kind caring children,” the teacher wrote. “The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.”
