—Why were you late today？你今天为什么迟到了？
—I got up late this morning. 我今天早上起晚了。
这两句话都使用了一般过去时，表示发生在过去的动作或状态。
句型“Why + was/were + 主语 + 形容词/名词/介词短语 + 时间状语？”用于询问他人为何在某时做了某事。 today虽然指今天，但是“迟到”是过去的事情，所以也要用一般过去时。
一般过去时讲解及用法
When did you go to bed last night 你昨晚什么时候上床睡觉的？
句型“When + did + 主语 + 动词（短语）原形 （+ 其他）＋时间？”用于询问他人在过去何时做了什么事情。答语通常为“主语 + 动词（短语）过去式 + at＋时间点.”
last night意为“昨晚”，是明确的过去时间标志，决定句子必须用一般过去时。类似的时间状语还有yesterday（昨天）、two days ago（两天前）、in 2020（在2020年）。
