二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
I learned an important lesson from one of my patients. When I first met Linda, she was only six years old, beautiful and energetic. She had an accident when she fell into the fire on a camping trip, leaving 30 percent of her skin surface damaged.
Linda would require several weeks in the hospital and three additional surgeries(手术).Between each operation, nurses daily took her for disinfection(消毒).
Overnight, the dressings(敷料) would stick to the wound and have to be pulled away. Each step was more painful for Linda than the previous one.For an adult, the agonizing(折磨人的) pain and daily fear proves overwhelming. For a child,it has an impact forever.Linda’s life would never be the same.
I took care of Linda for the next several years, revising her scars and freeing areas of tightness in her face and neck.Over that time, her scarring faded and her appearance improved significantly.Eventually, her family moved away and I lost track of her.
Years later,at a national meeting,I ran into a plastic surgeon I knew who told me he had met a former patient of mine.It was Linda, she was doing extremely well and she was his colleague and not his patient.Linda had become a nurse and worked with him in a burn unit.
She was the nurse the patients most often asked to clean their wounds and change their dressings. Her compassion(同情) and her courage in returning to a burn unit inspired their confidence and reduced their fears.Linda turned her pain into compassion. She devoted every day of her life toward helping others overcome their pain.
Physicians can be frustrated and overwhelmed when we don’t have enough time in a day to complete everything we need to do.Linda taught me the importance of slowing down.Among the best gifts we,as physicians, can give our patients, whether in the exam room or at the bedside in the hospital,is to take the time to show the compassion we feel.

A.Outspoken. B.Well-behaved.
C.Painful. D.Strong-minded.
17.What step could cause unbearable pain

C.Pity. D.Friendliness.
19.What can we infer from the passage

B.Linda was mostly trusted by her patients.
C.Linda’s experience led her to be a nurse.
D.Gifts make patients confident in operations.
Emergencies can happen anytime, so being prepared for a home first aid kit(成套工具) is important for your family. Having a proper one in your home is an easy but necessary part of good emergency preparation.
Pick a good container
One good choice is a largetranslucentplastic container, which makes it easy to see the materials inside. Lunchboxes are also another good choice. Basically, if it’s big enough, and at least somewhat water resistant, it can make a good container. Regardless of your container choice, it should be easy to recognize, so write “FIRST AID” on it with a marker.
Teach your family about the kit
For younger children who shouldn’t use the items in the kit, teach them where it’s located, so they could show a visitor, relative or babysitter. For older children and adults, instruct them on how to use the items in it. Use a first aid instruction booklet, like those available from the American Red Cross for guidance and place a booklet in the kit for reference.
Keep your kit up–to–date
No one wants to fetch a first aid kit and find the bandage box empty or the pain relievers expired (过期了的). Keep track of supply amounts and expiration dates regularly.
Create a checklist in the kit
Record every item on a sheet of paper and keep it in the kit. Besides, record the amounts of the items and expiration dates next to the listed items on the checklist that you include in your kit. In this way, anyone who wants to reach the kit can immediately know what it includes and doesn’t include. Also, they can be clear whether the items can be used.
20. Which is close to the meaning of the underlined word “translucent”
A.Wide. B.Advanced.
C.Clear. D.Strong.
21. What should the young children be told about the home first aid kit
A.How to use the items. B.What it contains.
C.Where to place it. D.When to fetch it.
22. Why should the home first aid kit be examined regularly
A.To make it clean and tidy. B.To make sure it’s available.
C.To be familiar with the items. D.To learn to deal with emergencies.

二、阅读单选(本大题共3小题)
Born in Brussels in 1916, Andrée de Jongh was nicknamed Little Cyclone early on by her father. Just 24 in 1940 when the Germans invaded, de Jongh was a commercial artist who packed up and volunteered with the Red Cross, and then joined the Resistance, risking everything to save Allied pilots and crew members shot down by the Germans and trapped behind enemy lines.
De Jongh found these men, and she hid them and fed them. And with her family’s and other resisters’ help, she got them clothes and identity papers. Then she led them on a 1,000 mile escape route through occupied Belgium and France into neutral Spain.
The route was called the Comet line, and this girl inspired not just the men she saved but also the men who heard about her.
The value of what she was doing went beyond the individuals she was saving. She gave hope to air crews in England before they took off.
Some 800 Allied troops and airmen survived the war because of Andrée de Jongh. Known as Dédée by those she rescued, she personally led 118 people over the mountains and into Spain. But the price she and all the other unknown heroes paid was enormous.
In January 1943, de Jongh was caught, and then sent to a concentration camp. Her father was caught and then shot to death. Her sister and her mother were imprisoned. Despite all the arrests and killings, the Comet line continued to be an escape route, right up until the Allies invaded Normandy.
Who we are as a nation, what we are, every freedom we have and celebrate this weekend, and all of our bounty, have been paid for by people like Andrée de Jongh—brave, good, caring and mostly forgotten people.

How to Have Open Communication
When you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of ways. 27 There are a few things that you can do when talking with someone to help have an open conversation.
28 Be mindful of where and when you need to have a discussion with someone, especially if you are having an important disagreement. Someone is not likely to be open when communicating if you are surrounded by family or out in public. Therefore, have a discussion when it's more convenient for both you and your partner.
Have patience. When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your points across. But this can make communication more difficult because you are so focused on your feelings that you aren't able to focus on what you need to say. Be patient and allow for silences that happen. 29
Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying. 30 This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand accurately. You don't need to agree with everything they say, but it is important to understand where they're coming from.
Be honest with your thoughts and your feelings. Sometimes you feel the need to soften your words to lessen the blow. 31 Regardless, when you leave out certain details, you're not able to communicate openly. You need to be honest with your partner about your needs and your experiences. By doing so, you're hopefully closer to being able to tackle the issue.
A.Wait for the appropriate time and place.
B.Discuss what you need to communicate openly.
C.Bring something positive into your communication.
D.Ask questions if you need to and even repeat what they said.
E.This could be because we don't want to offend the other person.
F.Open communication increases trust and helps bridge differences.
G.Sometimes you need a minute to think and accurately express your thoughts.

I’m writing to share with you how I saved my best friend Lily yesterday. We were having lunch when suddenly she was choked and couldn’t breathe normally. Panicked at first, I quickly calmed myself and recalled the Heimlich manoeuvre we’d just learned in our class.
I rushed behind her, wrapped my arms around her waist, made a fist with one hand and placed it right above her stomach. Then, I grasped my fist with my other hand and gave a force. Thankfully, after a few tries, the piece of food flew out and Lily could breathe again.
It was truly a nerve-wracking yet rewarding experience. I’m extremely grateful that I had the knowledge to act in time and made a difference.
Yours,

二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
Do you remember your very first day at school For most of us, it was so exciting to meet a teacher for the first time. It was great fun to have new classmates and a real desk to sit at.
For children this year, it’ll still feel thrilling for the students to be in a new environment. However, the students should wear a special uniform. It might also be a little scary to be sitting at a desk surrounded by strange plastic screens as a six-year-old.
There are two Florida teachers who have figured out a way to make those plastic dividers — installed on desks to keep a safe distance during the age of COVID-19 — less nerve-wracking, and more totally, joyfully brilliant.
First-grade teachers Patricia Dovi and Kim Martin, of St. Barnabas Episcopal School in DeLand, Florida have turned coronavirus dividers into the windshields and windows of, yes, Jeeps.
“Anything that we can do to add some silliness and some creativity to get them excited is going to be really important in the longevity of this school year,” Dovi told Insider.
The school supplied the plexiglass; Dovi and Martin paid for the decorations out of their own pockets. Martin estimates that the desks took about a week to complete. Wasn’t all that work worth it Family and friends of these two inspiring teachers helped turn the desks into colorful Jeeps with personalized license plates.
Each student arrived just yesterday, to find their very own “car” waiting for them. “We cannot praise him too much, saying ‘Hey, purple Jeep, you’re getting out of your lane,” Martin joked. “I think it will be a smart way to keep the kids engaged. We have no doubt about that.”
16.What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A.Things are a little different. B.School uniforms are a must.
C.Students hate sitting at the desk. D.All the old desks are replaced.
17.Why did Dovi and Martin turn desks into jeeps for their 1st grade students
A.To make the naughty boys quiet. B.To make social distancing fun.
C.To draw their attention. D.To let them love learning.
18.Where did Dovi and Martin get money to decorate their desks
A.From the school. B.From the fund-raiser.
C.From their family and friends. D.From themselves.
19.Which word can best describe the students’ attitude to their very own “car”
A.Skeptical. B.Ridiculous.
C.Favorable. D.Conservative.
CPR (心肺复苏术) saves lives. It can really change someone’s life, as I found out for myself three years ago.
On October 14, 2009, my mom had an accident while playing soccer and was taken to hospital. The next morning, I was told that my mom had had a cardiac arrest (心脏停搏). I later learned that two players on the opposing team kept breathing air into my mother’s mouth and pressing her chest for seven minutes, as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. My mom stayed in the hospital for only ten days. I know that I am very lucky to have my mom here, because most people who have cardiac arrests and do not receive CPR within the first six minutes die.
My mom has used this experience to spread the word about CPR. She joined the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Support Group, which was set up to help survivors and their families through a difficult experience. The support group also takes part in the Heart Walk every year, raising money for the American Heart Association. And she attends Lobby Day each year, convincing the New York State Legislature to pass a law that would make basic CPR and first-aid training a graduation requirement for high school students.
This task is not as difficult as it may first appear to be. Every student in New York State must take health class in order to graduate. Just one or two days of health class each year will ensure that every student in the state will learn this important skill. This training is also nearly free. There is no need for a professional CPR instructor because the American Heart Association has online videos that show the newest techniques in CPR. Also, most local EMS services will lend training models to schools.
My mom and her fellow survivors go to a high school each year to talk to the students about the importance of learning CPR. This training will not get you the official CPR certification (证书), but as my mom says, “You don’t need a little card to save someone’s life.”
20.How does the author feel about the two players
A.Deeply grateful. B.Quite concerned.
C.A bit sorry. D.Rather frightened.
21.In what way did the author’s mother change
A.She made efforts to improve CPR. B.She realized the key importance of law.
C.She paid more attention to her health. D.She became an active CPR supporter.
22.What does Paragraph 4 say about the CPR training for students
A.It may be turned down by a lot of students.
B.It requires little time and money.
C.It will become a graduation requirement.
D.It is difficult and dangerous.
23.What might the author’s mother agree with
A.It is challenging for many students to master CPR skills.
B.Every graduate should get an official CPR certification.
C.CPR skills are more important than CPR certifications.
D.High schools should make a special card for CPR learners.
Elephants on the coast of Thailand are acting strangely. They stamp their feet and signal (示意) towards the hills. The sea draws back from the beaches. Fish flop (扑腾) on the seabed. Suddenly, a huge wave appears. This is no ordinary wave. It is a tsunami!
Tsunami waves are larger and faster than normal surface waves. A tsunami wave can travel as fast as a jet plane and can be as tall as a ten-storey building. Imagine dropping a stone into a pool. The water on the surface ripples (起细浪). A tsunami is like a very powerful ripple. Tsunamis begin when the ocean rises or falls very suddenly. Lots of seawater is displaced. This movement causes huge waves.
If a tsunami happens, there must be some kind of force that causes the ocean water to become displaced. Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes. However, volcanoes, landslides, and large icebergs can also cause one of these huge waves.
Tsunamis are extremely powerful. Ordinary waves lose power when they break. Tsunami waves can remain powerful for several days. Because tsunami waves are so strong, they can kill people, damage buildings, and completely ruin an ecosystem in just one hour.
Scientists have no way of telling people in advance when a tsunami will hit. However, if a powerful enough earthquake happens, scientists can send out a warning or a watch. A warning means that a tsunami will very likely hit soon. A watch means that conditions are suitable for a tsunami. When people receive a watch or a warning, they have more time to prepare. It is best not to get caught unaware (没意识到) when a tsunami is on the way!
24.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.Causes of tsunamis. B.Signs of tsunamis.
C.The force of tsunamis. D.The effect of tsunamis.
25.What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Moved. B.Polluted. C.Stored. D.Lost.
26.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.A warning is more serious than a watch.
B.A warning is sent out after an earthquake.
C.A watch means a tsunami may not happen.
D.A warning means a tsunami will surely happen.
27.What is the purpose of the text
A.To tell a story. B.To provide facts.
C.To give advice. D.To compare opinions.

A few days before New Year 1944, Patricia Krueger received a telegram from the U. S. Army. She hoped it would contain a belated birthday greeting from her husband, an army flight engineer, Charles Krueger, whom she had not heard from for 2 weeks. Instead, the message said he wasn’t coming home: His B-29 had been lost and he was later declared MIA (missing in action). Their son, John Krueger from Middleton, Wisconsin, is still in tears when he recounts this story.
Decades later, the military continues to work to bring back the remains of soldiers like Charles Krueger. The job of finding them falls to DPAA (Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency), created in 2015 after critics charged that the previous MIA search process was slow, and behind on innovations in science and technology. Between 1973 and 2014, the remains of only 1,849 missing service member s were returned to their families; in 2021, the agency accounted for the remains of 141 MIAs; according to DPAA figures.
To accelerate the work, Congress gave DPAA the authority to develop public-private partnerships with scientists and groups outside the government. “Teaming up with academic scientists introduces new ways of thinking,” says military historian Michael Dolski. “Working with partners allows us to tap into their technologies and capabilities in ways that we just can’t maintain.”
For scientists, the work is more than technically satisfying. “It’s the most rewarding aspect of my career,” says Mires, a scientist working with the agency. “In other archaeology sites I’ve worked on, the history is remote,” he says. “Here, you’re doing something not for a thing, but for a person, and all the people they touched.”
26.What was the telegram about in paragraph 1
A.A New Year dinner. B.Krueger’s disappearance.
C.A birthday greeting. D.John Krueger’s memory.
27.Why did people criticize the previous MIA search process
A.Because DPAA wants to continue the search.
B.Because it took long and lacked creativeness.
C.Because the work was stopped by the military.
D.Because 141 MIAs’ remains were found in 2021.
28.What is Michael Dolski’s attitude to the cooperation with scientists and groups
A.Patient. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.
29.What is a suitable title for the text
