March: Traverse Ice Roads in the Arctic Circle

On the edge of the Arctic Ocean in early March, the temperature in Inuvik remains below zero.Cars and trucks ease their way along the 185 km ice road to Tuktoyaktuk as it’s known to locals. The treeline disappears as you head north, the blue ice solid beneath your wheels. The ice road is open from late December to late April. But March is the best time for the trip because the road is still solid and the weather isn’t as bad.

Where: Throughout British Columbia and Alberta
In mid-May,as the landscape of western Canada emerges from its wintry cover of snow, the world-renowned Rocky Mountaineer train begins operation for the season, running along attractive routes between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies. It’s one of the world’s best journeys by rail, and the luxury train’s glass-domed cars allow passengers to fully appreciate the mountains, lakes, and rivers scrolling by.The undisputed(无可争议的) highlights: Banff,Jasper, and Lake Louise.

I grew up in the Great Lakes State, and for many years now, during my annual summer visit back to Michigan,I’m always happy about what I don’t see.I don’t see crowds of Californians rushing into lovely lakeside towns like Petoskey or Glen Arbor.I don’t see hundreds of New Yorkers playing in Lake Michigan or coming down the steep white sands of Sleeping Bear Dunes.
No offense to the masses on both coasts, but I’ve always been glad the original charms of northwest Michigan felt like my secret—or at least a secret held by a smaller group of people, largely from the Midwest.
Lately, however,I’ve been thinking about the downside of being out of sight and out of mind.
Most people seldom think about Lakes Michigan,Huron,Superior,Erie, and Ontario. Many can’t even name all five. But they should care about them because,as Tim Folger writes in a cover story, the Great Lakes are “arguably the continent’s most precious resource, unmeasurably more valuable than oil, gas,or coal”.
Together the lakes hold more than 20 percent of the surface fresh water on Earth and 84 percent of the surface fresh water in North America.Almost 40 million Americans and Canadians “drink from the lakes, fish on them, transport goods over them, farm on their shores, and work in cities that wouldn’t exist without them”,Folger writes.
And yet we abuse them terribly: polluting them, introducing invasive species, allowing fertilizer runoff(径流) to create algal blooms(藻花)large enough that they can be seen from space.Climate change means the lakes don’t freeze as much as they used to,and severe storms have become more frequent.
So read Folger’s story.Appreciate the beauty of the landscape in the amazing photos by Keith Ladzinski.Become an advocate to protect our Great Lakes.
18.What can be inferred from paragraphs 1 & 2
A.The Great Lakes State is crowded.
B.The writer likes the warm atmosphere.
C.Fewer visitors are favourable there in summer.
D.The writer hopes to play about Lake Michigan.
19.What does Tim Folger think of the Great Lakes
A.They are as important as oil.
B.They are infinitely superior to oil,gas or coal.
C.They are the most important resource in the world.
D.All Americans and Canadians depend on them to live.
20.Which of the following is the current situation of the Great Lakes
A.People don’t treat them well.
B.Algal blooms are invisible from space.
C.They don’t freeze at all because of climate change.
D.The lakes hold 20 percent of the surface fresh water on Earth.
21.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To recommend Folger’s book.
B.To tell people how to save the continent.
C.To attract more visitors to the Great Lakes.
D.To call on people to save the Great Lakes.

The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May,when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester,to places like Athens,Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

Very few people enjoy going to the dentist, especially for a filling. Often fillings need to be replaced during the patients' lifetime. But is filling the cavity (蛀牙洞) with a foreign material really the best treatment What if the tooth could repair itself with its own material—dentine (牙质) Researchers at King's College London have found a process that may replace the traditional method.
Paul Sharpe of King's College London says a new treatment for cavities is simpler. It uses a drug that causes the tooth to fill in the hole naturally with dentine. “It involves putting a drug in the hole. It excites a natural process, which starts to occur anyway following the damage, so you can actually get the big hole repaired and the repair is the production of the natural material, the dentine.”
Usually a new drug requires repeated testing before it is approved for treatment. However, this drug that produces the regrowth material in teeth has already been approved. It is a drug used to treat Alzheimer's disease and other disorders of the nervous system. Researchers explain that they use only a small amount and they use it locally. Usually that means the medicine is put directly on the affected area. It does not travel through the patient's blood.
Nigel Carter heads Britain's Oral Health Foundation. He describes the new treatment as an exciting possibility for dental care. But Carter also has a warning, “Actually regrowing the tooth that has been lost with a cavity would be really a huge step forward. But it's also important that we remember that we shouldn't be getting the cavity in the first place. We're talking about a totally preventable disease.”

The Appalachian Trail winds some 2,190 miles across 14 states in the eastern US.Although it attracts thousands of serious hikers each spring, only one in four hikers completes the entire trail.
The Sutton family recently finished hiking the entire trail. They are a unique trio(三人组) as their son Harvey turned five on the trail, which makes him the youngest to complete the Appalachian Trail.

Although the Suttons are now back home, they have incredible memories of this mini-retirement.The journey is a life-changing experience for the Sutton family and is an inspiration for families who dream of taking a similar journey.

I started to worry when the golf car taking me, Steve, and our suitcases stopped in the middle of the Maine forest. A yurt (蒙古包) is a tent tall enough to stand in and wide enough to fit a big family. But I didn’t see it anywhere.
“You hike from here,” said the driver, pointing down a weedy (杂草丛生的) path. The woods were darkening, and Steve encouraged me to pick up the pace. My summer sandals (凉鞋) slipped on the wet leaves. Steve and I spent a good hour until we spotted the light of the yurt.
Steve skillfully lit a fire. We ate some sandwiches, had a few beers, and settled in for a good night’s sleep. But I couldn’t relax. I shook Steve awake. “The door to the yurt doesn’t lock,” I said. “What if a bear wanders into the camp ”
“Don’t worry. Moose (驼鹿) are a bigger problem here than bears,” he said.
“Well, what if someone decides to rob us Or what if one of the locals wants to teach us a lesson ” “OK,” Steve said with a heavy sigh. He forcefully placed a chair under the door handle. “There, additional protection.” He smiled. “And even if someone gets through the door, you’ll have time to grab that book and use it as a weapon.” I laughed. Sleep moved in. We could enjoy our weekend.

Around the world, traditional crafts are falling victim to technology and globalization. In Hong Kong, Miru Wong Ka-lam is doing her bit to keep the art of Yue embroidery (粤绣) alive. Wong’s hand-embroidered shoe shop, Sindart, is one of a few in the city to have survived the industry. To share her skills, the third-generation owner of the 65-year-old small business holds weekly workshops for those eager to learn the dying art of embroidery.
When family members gather for dinner during the Mid-Autumn Festival, they exchange gifts. Handmade slippers (拖鞋) used to be a popular item to give to elderly members of the family. Unfortunately, the practice is now less common. “When my grandparents started the shop in the 1950s, there were a lot more orders for handmade slippers. Now, it seems that people are more focused on buying mooncakes,” Wong says.
Cheaper, machine-embroidered slippers are another threat (威胁) to the traditional craft’s survival. Wong, however, believes that handmade slippers have better quality compared with machine-made ones. “Machine-made slippers feel different from handmade ones,” she says. “The material is too soft, making the slippers uncomfortable.”
One element (元素) that makes Sindart’s slippers unique is the wide range of designs. “My late grandfather, who founded Sindart in 1958 in a tiny shop, created his own embroidery designs in the1950s,” Wong says.
Wong has made up her mind to give new life to the art of Yue embroidery by adding modern elements and making footwear that is suitable for everyday use. “This includes applying hand embroidery to not only slippers, which is the tradition, but also to other types of shoes. Now I’m studying shoemaking techniques in a shoe factory so that I can achieve this,” she says.
9.What is Wong’s purpose in holding weekly workshops
A.To enlarge her business.
B.To practice her embroidery skills.
C.To promote the art of embroidery.
D.To increase her influence in the industry.
10.Why have handmade slippers become less popular during the Mid-Autumn Festival
A.People think they’re out of date.
B.Old people do not want to wear them.
C.They’re not as good as they used to be.
D.People prefer to buy mooncakes instead.
11.Why are machine-made slippers considered a threat to handmade slippers
A.They are of higher quality. B.They are more comfortable.
C.They are more affordable. D.They are made of softer material.
12.What will Wong do in the future
A.Open more shoe factories. B.Expand her product range.
C.Apply hand embroidery to clothes. D.Build partnerships with local shoe factories.

I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip.I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So,naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.
Montreal, the second largest city in Canada,is a four-hour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.
After dropping off our bags at our hotel,we were immediately walking down the famous St.Catherine’s Street. While we walked, two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.
All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold.Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine,a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy(肉汁).It is delicious.
However,we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French-speaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help.
We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical buildings and monuments in Montreal. But at night we’d head to the very modern dance clubs and bars.Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveller can choose whichever direction he wants to go.

I used to overeat. I’ve never been significantly overweight, so people are surprised to hear this. When you think of overeating, you think of someone who is above their natural weight range(范围), right Well, I used to purposefully undereat as well. I was able to keep my weight within some control, but only through a lot of physical and mental pain.
Here’s a glimpse(一瞥)into my life as a first-year university student:
Friday: Go to a party and eat a lot of chips. Feel guilt and regret. Vow (发誓) to wake up and run an extra mile.
Saturday: Run 6 miles, come home and only eat a tiny breakfast. Eat like a bird for the rest of the day. Feel proud of myself.
Sunday: Study and snack on chocolate chips all day. Feel sick.
Monday: Head to class with no snack and no money so that I can’t buy any food. Feel hungry but full of willpower. Go home and overeat at dinner. Feel out of control.
My feelings were on a constant pendulum shift. I was proud and in control one moment, and then full of regret and out of control the next. It was exhausting.
As I studied nutrition and human anatomy(人体解剖学) in university,I started to learn just how amazing the human body is! The human body is an amazing, self-regulatory system. It knows precisely how much food it needs. When I learned this, my whole world changed. I stopped trying to manage my eating with willpower. Instead of trying to power through my hunger, I would provide my body with wholesome foods, so I would feel hungry less often.
This process definitely took some work and reflection, but after a while it became second nature. Eating has become a joyful experience, instead of a source of stress and worry in my life. All my eating is now guilt-free! I shamelessly eat unhealthy snacks without regret. Of course, the majority of my food intake does come from whole, healthy foods that are close to nature.

This experience taught me the power of teamwork and the urgency of ocean conservation. I’ve grown more curious about humans’ role in protecting marine ecosystems. Let’s discuss your thoughts on this topic sometime!
Best wishes,
