To deal with low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. Bishan Library (Singapore)
Built in 2006, this library with skylights and trellises (格架), is meant to create a modern glass treehouse. Glass pods (吊舱) of varying colours stick out of the building randomly to create cozy yet airy places for reading throughout the building. At the same time, a more open-plan children’s room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from traveling upward and disturbing those concentrating in high places.

Libraries are usually known for their quiet atmosphere, but this one encourages conversation. Throughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change—to find poetry where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.
Landscape is another unchanging element of art.It can be found from ancient times through the 17th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie, one of the new American realists, continued this practice.Leslie sought out the same place where Thomas Cole,a romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before.Unlike Cole who insists on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature,Leslie paints what he actually sees.In his paintings, there is no particular change in emotions and he includes ordinary things like the highway in the background. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of colour photography to help both the eyes and the memory when he improves his painting back in his workroom.
Besides, all art begs the age-old question:What is real? Each generation of artists has shown their understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects, the realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the Cro-Magnon cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals in the ancient forests. To sum up,understanding reality is a necessary struggle for artists of all periods.
Over thousands of years, the function of the arts has remained relatively constant.Past or present,Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate experience.Variety and diversity are the faces of art,and together they express the basic need and hope of human beings.

Daniel Brush,an astonishing worker in gold, jewels and steel died on November 2022,aged 75.Students from a jewellery school once came to Brush’s studio,a loft in mid-Manhattan,awed to be meeting a figure who,to them, was a worker of miracles.
For 45 years in that loft,he had pursued his calling. His wife Olivia was the only company. He produced hundreds of objects of all sorts, most of them exquisite and many astonishingly small.Rather than use electricity,he laboured alone in a forest of antique machines and when tools frustrated him he made his own, displaying them in cupboards as art in themselves.
Above all else,he worked in gold. His obsession took fire when at 13 he saw an Etruscan gold bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The ancient technique of applying gold beads as fine as sand-grains to a curved gold surface without solder(焊接),was stunning, but so was the lightness of spirit.
He resolved then that he would make such a bowl, and gold became the study of his life.Simply to watch it melt, turn to red-hot and white-hot,then glow purple, was magical. To hold pure gold grain and let it move slowly through his fingers restored his calm of spirit. His chief motivation,he said, was to understand the material and, through that, himself. He wondered why his heart had beaten so fast in the museum that day.Gold in particular had a message for him.His contact with this glorious metal might focus all his attention and help him to hear it.
He developed delicate craftsmanship, with each object virtually a museum piece. For Daniel Brush,he loved the idea that one might take a piece made by Brush out of a pocket, let its beauty pass from mind to mind, and smile. That too was what its maker was after.

三、七选五阅读(本大题共1小题)
It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past. 30
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention. 31 Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories. 32 The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: 33 She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
34 This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked — to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.
A.Familiarity is important.
B.Music itself is easy to remember.
C.But what makes music so effective in doing this
D.Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E.This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F.Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.

The London-based 13-year-old boy appeared for the show’s audition (海选) in April, 2023 and was accompanied by his mom and sister. “My big dream is to be an opera singer. I started singing at 7,” said Malakai to the BGT team. He then added jokingly, “My mom made me join the choir because she’s very bossy.” The teenager mentioned she was his biggest fan.
Malakai’s mom was worried as he was about to perform and said, “It scares me because, on his first show, somebody heckled (对……起哄) him. It is thought that music can make maths more enjoyable, keep students engaged and help case fear or anxiety they have about maths.
To find out more, Turkish researcher Dr Ayca Akin, from the Department of Software Engineering, Antalya Belek University, searched academic databases for research on the topic published between 1975 and 2022. She then combined the results of 55 studies from around the world, involving almost 78, 000 young people from kindergarten pupils to university students, to come up with an answer.
Students took maths tests before and after taking part in the intervention and the change in their scores was compared with that of youngsters who didn’t take part in an intervention. The use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of maths classes, was associated with greater improvement in maths over time. The integrated lessons had the biggest effect, with around 73% of students who had integrated lessons doing significantly better than youngsters who didn’t have any type of musical intervention. Some 69% of students who learned how to play instruments and 58% of students who had normal music lessons improved more than pupils with no musical intervention.
The results also indicate that music helps more with learning arithmetic than other types of maths and has a bigger impact on younger pupils and those learning more basic mathematical concepts. Dr Akin points out that maths and music have much in common, such as the use of symmetry symbols. Both subjects also require abstract thought and quantitative reasoning.
Limitations of the analysis include the relatively small number of studies available for inclusion. This meant it wasn’t possible to look at the effect of factors such as gender, socioeconomic status and length of musical instruction on the results.
Dr Akin adds, “Encouraging mathematics and music teachers to plan lessons together could help ease students’ anxiety about mathematics, while also boosting achievement.”
23.How did Dr Akin conduct her research
A.By launching a questionnaire online. B.By creating a data model.
C.By analyzing data worldwide. D.By surveying university students.
24.What were the students asked to do to reflect the effect of the intervention

C.Plan lessons with music teachers. D.Learn more basic mathematical concepts.
25.What does the author think of the research
A.Overall B.Sensitive C.Subjective D.Imperfect
In China, jade (玉) serves as one of the nation’s oldest symbols of virtue and nobility. For years, jade carvers have produced beautiful artworks, because of their exquisite skills and complicated techniques passed down from generation to generation. Among China’s wide-ranging styles of jade carving, Beijing’s is one of the most famous and recognized worldwide for its use of imperial (皇家的) elements.
Jade carving originated in the Yuan Dynasty. In the succeeding dynasty, the Ming, the court gathered skilled jade carvers from all over the nation to create the finest of products for the imperial family, lifting the art to new heights. During the Qing Dynasty, jade became especially popular in Beijing, and the carving skill reached its peak. After the Qing, the craft continued to flourish, with thousands of people pouring their creativity into the jade carving industry. In 2008, Beijing’s particular practices were listed as national intangible cultural heritage.
Zhang Tiecheng is a third-generation Beijing jade carving inheritor (继承人). In 1983, when the technical school attached to the Beijing Jade Factory began to enroll students, Zhang decided to try his luck. After four years of training, he graduated and started working at the factory. Through pure diligence and perseverance, he gradually became a master of the carving art. The year 2008 was a significant one for Zhang. Chinese jade art was introduced internationally through the “Chinese Seal” Olympic symbol and the jade-carved medals. Zhang participated in the design of both. They combined white jade with gold, a light greenish jade with silver, and a gray shade of jade with bronze to make the medals present that perfect combination of truthfulness and virtue.
Following his Olympic work, Zhang was invited to restore (修复) the jade decorations in the Palace Museum. During this assignment, Zhang couldn’t help but feel sad as he realized how the once successful jade artistry was slowly disappearing from its once celebrated stage. As an inheritor of Beijing jade carving, Zhang has added modern artistic elements into this traditional skill. He now hopes more young people can take up the craftsmanship so it can continue to flourish (繁荣) for many years to come.

I’m happy to hear from you. Just as you have learned, artificial intelligence is now widely used in China. Here I’d like to share with you what I experienced during the week-long National Day holiday.
When traveling, we were amazed at the changes and convenience brought by artificial intelligence. First of all, wherever and whenever we went, we could use the mobile payment. More interesting, we no longer had to get into tourist attractions with the ID card. We could do it through a face recognition app now, which really saved time so that we didn’t have to wait in queue. What an amazing experience!
I do hope you can come to China and experience all of this when you have spare time. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours truly,

Researchers at the Université de Montreal have found that our favorite music, particularly the emotions brought on by listening to bittersweet music, might be an effective, drug-free way of lowering our perception of pain.
Music has long been known to have a hypoalgesic effect, meaning that it causes a decreased sensitivity to painful stimuli (刺激物). But to test which kind of music was most effective for reducing pain, 63 participants received moderately painful heat stimuli to the inner forearm, resulting in a sensation similar to a hot teacup being held against the skin. The pain was paired with short pieces of music, each lasting around seven minutes.
Listening to their favorite music strongly reduced pain intensity and unpleasantness in participants, compared to control tracks or silence. Unfamiliar relaxing tracks did not have the same effect.
The researchers then interviewed participants about their favorite songs and conducted an analysis about four themes related to categories of emotional experience: energizing/activating, happy/cheerful, calming/relaxing, and moving/bittersweet. They wanted to see whether emotion themes couldmodulatethe hypoalgesic effect of favorite music. “We found that reports of moving or bittersweet emotional experiences seem to result in lower ratings of pain unpleasantness, which was driven by more intense enjoyment of the music and more musical chills,” said Valevicius.
While they don’t define “musical chills” in their paper, the researchers point to previous neurological studies that suggest a dopamine (多巴胺) pathway in the brain may be fundamental to both the enjoyment of music and music-induced chills. In some people, the researchers say, chills can appear as a tingling sensation, shivers, or goosebumps.
22. What is the common view about music

B.They have been defined in previous studies.
C.They may be related to dopamine in the brain.
D.They contribute little to the enjoyment of music.
25. What’s the text mainly about
A.Listening to music can make us more focused.
B.Music is a powerful tool for boosting our mood.
C.Emotional pain has an impact on our physical health.
D.Our favorite bittersweet music may help relieve pain.
The word “art” usually evokes (唤起) images of white-walled galleries, abstract paintings costing millions of dollars and wealthy people, far removed from our everyday experience. Yet, art in 21st century is a different story.
The Internet has weakened the idea that art appreciation is only for the rich, It has enabled more people than ever to have access to izens are not only consumers of art but creators and participants, too. The social media has made it much easier to share unprofessional work with the whole world. An unprofessional artist can now sell work or get advertising money from online videos.
“A picture is worth a thousand words” is the motto of data visualisation (可视化) fans. The amount of information available today can be huge, so some people are working on presenting data using visually appealing diagrams that are easy for the public to understand. Of course, diagrams can also be used by dishonest people to mislead the audience, so we need to take care to interpret them the right way.
Another way that art advances education is by enabling us to understand concepts that are invisible to the naked eye. For most biology students, the names and functions of dozens of proteins go in one ear and out the other, but unforgettable videos like “The Inner Life of the Cell” turn proteins into tiny people with different jobs in a city of large machinery. The same goes for concepts in physics such as black holes- we can understand them better with the help of artists who have backgrounds in both art and science.
Even though most people may not be consciously aware of it, art is all around us. As most of our surrounding environment is man-made, everything in it contains some element of art and can influence our behaviour—telling us where to go or how to interact with objects, feeding us true or false information and controlling our emotions. Art indeed has a greater impact than many would believe it does.;
26.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.How the Internet provides service for the rich.
B.How the Internet brings art closer to everyone.
C.How netizens can contribute to art.
D.How people appreciate and use art.;
27.What’s the author s attitude towards using diagrams in paragraph 3
A.Optimistic. B.Disapproving. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.;
28.What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A.Videos turn proteins into tiny people.
B.Videos explain concepts better than pictures.
C.Art helps students understand some concepts.
D.Art helps artists have more backgrounds.;
29.Which of the following best describes art in the 21st century
A.Accessible and powerful. B.Abstract and graceful.
C.Expensive and digital. D.Traditional and controversial.

Matilda Browne (1869—1947) was a successful artist in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, few people know her name or her art today.
Matilda Browne showed promising artistic talent early in her life. Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, she got an introduction to art by watching her neighbor, painter Thomas Moran. Her parents supported their budding young artist. 30 And it paid off. Matilda Browne participated in her first major exhibition when she was just twelve years old.
Browne loved to paint animals, especially cows and other animals. 31 Her bold brushwork gave her paintings a live appearance. Her style is best described as Impressionism.
Matilda Browne quickly became a respected and successful artist. Her list of honours opened doors that would have been otherwise inaccessible for a female artist of her time. This is a more common story for female artists than one might think. So, why has Browne faded into being unknown 34 She was American, while books about American Impressionists tend to focus on the male artists.

24. 细节理解题。根据最后一段内容“While they don’t define ‘musical chills’ in their paper, the researchers point to previous neurological studies that suggest a dopamine (多巴胺) pathway in the brain may be fundamental to both the enjoyment of music and music-induced chills.(虽然他们没有在论文中定义‘音乐寒战’,但研究人员指出,之前的神经学研究表明,大脑中的多巴胺途径可能是音乐享受和音乐引起的寒战的基础)”可知,音乐寒战可能与大脑中的多巴胺有关。故选C项。
25. 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段“Researchers at the Université de Montreal have found that our favorite music, particularly the emotions brought on by listening to bittersweet music, might be an effective, drug-free way of lowering our perception of pain.(蒙特利尔大学的研究人员发现,我们最喜欢的音乐,尤其是听苦乐参半的音乐所带来的情感,可能是一种有效的、无毒的方式来降低我们对疼痛的感知)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项研究发现听最喜爱的音乐特别是凄美的音乐可能会缓解人们的疼痛感。故选D项。

二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer — I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician — but all that came to an end after 911. I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing golf otherwise.

“Everybody is talented because everybody who is human has something to express,” said American journalist Brenda Ueland. However, sometimes strict teachers or art world could kill creative spark in those who might not meet academic or art world expectations.
From a young age, Emily’s parents introduced her to art. Her father took her to world-renowned galleries in Germany, Italy, or France. Although her father loved and focused on Medieval and religious art, nine-year-old Emily was taken aback by the Modern Art. “I would go to the Modern Art section on my own. The paintings were fantastic, and my heart flew looking at them,” said Emily.
Although she loved arts and took creative subjects at school, she never had enough time to dedicate to painting. Only after she completed her Ph.D.in systematic theology (神学) at The University of St. Michael’s College in Canada, she found time to paint in 1996. “I was already teaching theology, and I enrolled (报名) in a watercolour class. Once I started, I could not stop,” she said.
Emily works as an independent fundraiser consultant for non-profit organizations, in addition to her responsibilities as a Fund Developer at Cardinal Felix Foundation. She regularly takes art classes or paints at home, but she packs her colours on every trip. “Painting helps me to get in touch with my true self. It has made my life richer,” she said.
In her painting, she likes to focus on a single object and draw attention to its details. “I like to see what is unique about an object and how it complements its surrounding,” she said. Emily enjoys creating colourful and novel scenes. She ignores remarks of those who follow strict art concepts and who is considered a genuine artist. Emily views art and creativity as a unique language that introduces her to different aspects of life and people. “Art is also my best friend. It is always here for me,” she said.

24. What is the common view about music
A.It has a pain-decreasing effect. B.It can enhance brain development.
C.It is a universal language of mankind. D.It may reduce feelings of pressure and depression.
25. What does the underlined word “modulate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Ruin. B.Improve. C.Judge. D.Adjust.
26. What can be learned about musical chills
A.They will be further studied by researchers.
B.They have been defined in previous studies.
C.They may be related to dopamine in the brain.
D.They contribute little to the enjoyment of music.
27. What’s the text mainly about
A.Listening to music can make us more focused.
B.Music is a powerful tool for boosting our mood.
C.Emotional pain has an impact on our physical health.
D.Our favorite bittersweet music may help relieve pain.
Look carefully and you’ll find musicians at the top of almost any industry. The television broadcaster Paula Zahn(cello) and the NBC chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd (French horn) attended college on music scholarships; Both Microsoft’s Mr. Allen and the venture capitalist Rogar MeNamee have rock bands. Lorry Page, a co-founder of Google, played saxophone in high school. The former World Bank president James D.Wolfensohn has played cello at Carnegie Hall.
The connection isn’t a coincidence. I know because I asked. I put the question to top-flight professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious (if often little-known) past lives as musicians. Almost all made a connection between their music training and their professional achievements.
Will your school music program turn your kid into a Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft (guitar) Or a Woody Allen(clarinet) Probably not. These are outstanding achievers. But the way these and other visionaries (有远见的人) I spoke to process music is interesting.
But the key question is: why does that connection exist Paul Allen offers an answer. He says music “establish your confidence in the ability to create.” He began playing the violin at age 7 and switched to the guitar as a teenager. Even in the early days of Microsoft, he would pick up his guitar at the end of marathon days of programming. The music was the emotional analog (类比) to his day job, both of them show his different creativity. He says, “something is pushing you to look beyond what currently exists and express yourself in a new way.”
For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a “hidden language,” as Mr. Wolfensohn calls it, one that enhances the ability to connect different or even opposite ideas. When he ran the World Band, Mr.Wolfensohn traveled to more than 100 countries, often taking in local performances (and occasionally joining in on a borrowed cello), which helped him understand “the culture of people”.
Consider the qualities these high achievers say music has sharpened: cooperation, creativity, discipline and the capacity to coordinate (协调) conflicting ideas. All are qualities obviously absent from public life. Music may not make you a genius, or rich, or even a better person. But it helps train you to think differently, to process different points of views - and most important, to take pleasure in listening.
28.The reason why the author quote so many outstanding people as examples in the first paragraph is
A.to prove the popularity and the charm of music
B.to prove all winners are musicians before
C.to encourage kids to choose school music program
D.to prove the connection between success and music
29.What question did the author put to top-flight professionals
A.Are success related to music or not
B.Why do you choose music training
C.What’s the benefit of learning music
D.Why do you give up the career as a musician
30.Which of the following is true
A.Everybody knows those well-known people are musicians before.
B.Musicians exist in all industries.
C.Music can certainly make you become a better person.
D.Music helps Mr. Wolfensohn have a better understanding of the different culture.
31.The main idea of this passage is that
A.many musicians are found at the top of almost any industry
B.music plays an important role in achieving success
C.music can provide a new way to express yourself
D.music is an absolute necessity for everyone
32.The author develops the passage mainly________
A.by classification B.by comparison C.by example D.by process
三、七选五阅读(本大题共1小题)
It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past. 33
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention. 34 Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories. 35 The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: 36 She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
37 This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
G.Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.

65.考查宾语从句。句意:知道如何订票对任何想做这项工作的人都有帮助。分析句子结构可知,“ wants to do the job.”
故填When。
67.考查表语从句。句意:我们现在遇到的困难是怎样才能说服他说实话。分析句子结构可知,“ we can persuade him to tell the truth.”为表语从句,结合语境“怎么样”可知,从句缺少方式状语,需用连接副词how引导。故填how。

69.applied to
70.composed of
71.sticking to
72.Set apart from

【详解】
Unless it was applied to real experiences properly,it指代句子主语book knowledge,从句中使用了was,从句的主语和主句主语一致同时用到了be动词,可以省略从句的主语和be动词,所以此处省略了it was,故填applied to。
70.考查过去分词。句意:100名医务人员和120名警察组成的救援队连夜赶到灾区。短语:be composed of“由……组成”,句中已有谓语came,所以此处使用非谓语,过去分词,故填composed of。

72.考查短语和过去分词。句意:这个年轻人凭借其独特的设计方法与其他竞争对手区别开来,在比赛中获得了一等奖。短语:set apart from“把……与……区分开来”,分析可知,空处在句中为状语,句子主语the young man与动词set为动宾关系,所以此处用过去分词,处于句首,所以首字母大写。故填Set apart from。
因而空处填will be rewarded with,故填will be rewarded with。
74.考查短语和过去分词。句意:那本新出版的历史书以其生动的图片展现了古老的文明,深受读者的喜爱。短语:bring...to life“使苏醒”,根据空后“by many vivid pictures”可知,此处用过去分词短语作补语,故填brought to life。
