A
When I was in primary school, my favourite place was the library.I was the kid who got shouted at for trying to bring home sixty books at a time because I just couldn’t decide which world I wanted to experience that week.I remember spending my weekends glued to a book, hungering for experiencing lives other than my own.Up until middle school, reading was a passion (酷爱) of mine.
Something changed after I entered senior high school though. All of a sudden, reading was a task that I could not avoid fast enough. The books that I read in school bored me, or even if I enjoyed the books themselves, the challenging homework I completed based on those books made me hate reading as a whole.
It actually wasn’t until recently that I rediscovered my love for reading. You may ask how I did that.Audiobooks (有声书).Last summer, I spent every morning taking long walks while listening to them, and I would find myself lost in the stories for hours. And now I’m rediscovering my passion for reading.I feel that pull again. That curiosity.
My love story with reading may have had a happy ending, but not everyone is as lucky as me.What went wrong?
What will happen is that students lose their love for reading because of the way many schools try to encourage children to read. For example, when a child is told to read for twenty minutes every night, they will read for the required amount of time and then check the task off on their list.In this way, reading has suddenly become a boring task instead of an exciting experience.
Making sure that kids keep their passion for reading will require us to rethink how we teach reading in schools and how we introduce books to children outside of school as well. There needs to be less of a focus on meeting reading requirements and more of a focus on creating an environment in which students are actually excited to read.

Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores.“The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says.“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes.“We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,”she says, “and they feel successful.”
5.What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?
A.She used to be a health worker.

B.Experiencing Country Life
C.Growing Vegetable Lovers

Fairview Place neighbours will soon be getting “cool pavement (路面)”— again — after the first time around didn’t go as planned.
“You would see little dog paw prints and shoe prints of the grey coolant (冷却剂) all across the pavement,” said Kyle Callert.
In February, Phoenix’s Street Transportation Department held a meeting with the Fairview Neighbourhood Association and local people to explain that the mess was a result of trying out a new product. Moving forward, the city promised to go back to using its original (最初的), trusted product that has been found to be successful.
“The surface temperature, especially during the heat of the day, is 10 to 12 degrees cooler than traditional asphalt (沥青).That’s because it’s not collecting and storing heat like dark asphalt does, only to give it off slowly at night,”said Heather Murphy from the Street Transportation Department.
Neighbours who live between 15th and 17th Street and from McDowell Road to Encanto Boulevard were given a survey with the choice of going back to traditional asphalt. But the results came back, showing more are in support of the cooler choice.Kyle Callert is excited about all it has to offer, especially because his dog loves being outdoors.
“I would feel more comfortable walking if it was cooler in the middle of the summer.Plus, it gives the neighbourhood a unique look,” said Callert.
More neighbourhoods can also look forward to seeing that soon. The Street Transportation Department says there will be 100 miles of “cool pavement” in 11 neighbourhoods across the city by mid-June.
“This shows 20 degrees difference. So, I am a strong supporter of ‘cool pavement’,” said one local.
9.What is the present situation of the pavement in Fairview Place?
A.It is a mess.
B.It is unusable.
C.It looks terribly old.
D.It remains unfinished.
10.Why was the meeting held according to Paragraph 3?
A.To collect locals’ ideas on a product.
B.To test a product in the neighbourhood.
C.To provide an answer to locals’ problems.
D.To keep the Department’s early promises.
11.What do Murphy’s words in Paragraph 4 center on?
A.The costs of “cool pavement”.
B.The plans for “cool pavement”.
C.The protection of “cool pavement”.
D.The advantage of “cool pavement”.
12.What does Callert say about “cool pavement”?
A.It is the cheapest of all cool choices.
B.It makes their neighbourhood special.
C.It attracts more dogs to the outside.
D.It is more environmentally friendly.
The oral exam (口试) is a long-held tradition in many schools and subjects. 13 Students must then answer properly, using materials they have learned in preparation for the exam.Showing plentiful knowledge of the subject results in passing the exam or an excellent grade.
14 As part of the completion of a program at the undergraduate or graduate levels, students might need to prove their knowledge and understanding of a subject area. Many science majors finish Bachelor’s studies with oral exams, or a particular program may require oral and written exams that show how a student has taken in all the materials learned in a four-year period.Usually study guides are available for these exams. 15
One valuable tip for students to succeed is to practice before the exam. 16 But by answering questions classmates or family ask them students can do as many practices as possible. On the day of the exam, students should dress plainly but respectfully, and in keeping with any dress requirements.
Students taking these exams should remember how much they have learned, which is hopefully quite a lot. 17 When waiting outside the test room, taking a deep breath and reminding themselves that the oral exam is a nice way to show off how much knowledge has been learned from teachers can help overcome stressful moments. Also, any other relaxation techniques that help can be used.
A.It raises questions to students in spoken form.
B.Behaving properly can earn students some favor.
C.They may not be able to predict all the questions.
D.Usually, students performing well are experienced.
E.Nervousness can even make the smartest student get stuck.
F.There are many examples in college where oral exams are used.
G.Therefore, prepared students tend not to be surprised by what they’re asked.

根据第一段中的says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts可知,Abby Jaramillo是Urban Sprouts项目的一个发起人。
The kids ...come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful和some are initially ...turned off by the dirt可知,这个项目刚开始时面临的一个问题就是一些孩子不喜欢园地工作。

所以A项(它以口头形式向学生提出问题)符合语境,A项中的questions呼应下文的answer,in spoken form呼应上文的oral exam。

Realizing your potential①
Hello, everyone! Welcome to senior high school! [1]Today is the start of a new term, the start of a three-year journey and the start of a promising future②.
[2]I can’t wait to③ describe to you what senior high school life is like. The path before you leads to④ a world full of challenges⑤: a new environment, new knowledge and new ways of thinking. However, for those of you with a positive⑥ mind, opportunity lies in⑦ each challenge.[3]When you rise to⑧ the challenges, you will have the opportunity to acquire⑨ great knowledge and enjoy personal growth. Most importantly⑩, your time and effort at senior high school will open the door to your potential.
  [1]三个名词短语the start of ...
此处what ...is like可翻译为“……
[3]句中When引导时间状语从句,动词不定式短语to acquire ...growth作后置定语,修饰the opportunity。
“What is potential?” you may ask.[4]Put simply, potential is your natural ability that can be developed when you try hard enough. [5]Who knows what beautiful works of art you will create, what medical advances you will make or what amazing technologies you will develop! The possibilities are endless, and I have confidence in your ability to make a difference to your family, to your community and to our country.Over the next three years, you will discover your potential while you develop as a student and as a person.
[6]To fully realize your potential, it is important for you to make the most of our school resources. Take advantage of your classes, learn from your teachers and classmates, and make use of our school facilities .There are also a lot of school activities for you.Join a club or two, and take an active part in different sports.
  [6]本句是“It is+形容词+for sb to do sth”结构,it作形式主语,真正的主语是后面的动词不定式短语。
[7]Of equal importance are good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude . Carefully plan your study, set clear goals and balance your schoolwork with other activities. As a senior high school student, you must make efforts to improve your communication and problem-solving skills.Last but not least , always look on the bright side and never lose hope, even in difficult situations.[8]In time you will find yourself growing into a well-rounded individual .
主语是good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude。 Good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude are of equal importance。
[8]句中含有“find+宾语+宾语补语”结构,growing into a well-rounded individual作yourself 的宾语补语。
[9]As Lao-Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. ” You need to make a continuous effort to train your mind and develop your character.Senior high school will help you learn and grow, yet you alone are responsible for realizing your great potential.Be confident, do your best and make us proud!

A
When I was in primary school, my favourite place was the library.I
was the kid who got shouted at for trying to bring home sixty books at a
time because I just couldn’t decide which world I wanted to experience
that week.I remember spending my weekends glued to a book,
hungering for experiencing lives other than my own.Up until middle
school, reading was a passion (酷爱) of mine.
Something changed after I entered senior high school though. All of a
sudden, reading was a task that I could not avoid fast enough. The books
that I read in school bored me, or even if I enjoyed the books
themselves, the challenging homework I completed based on those books
made me hate reading as a whole.
It actually wasn’t until recently that I rediscovered my love for
reading.You may ask how I did that.Audiobooks (有声书).Last
summer, I spent every morning taking long walks while listening to
them, and I would find myself lost in the stories for hours. And now
I’m rediscovering my passion for reading.I feel that pull again. That
curiosity.
My love story with reading may have had a happy ending, but not
everyone is as lucky as me.What went wrong?
What will happen is that students lose their love for reading because
of the way many schools try to encourage children to read. For example,
when a child is told to read for twenty minutes every night, they will read
for the required amount of time and then check the task off on their list.In
this way, reading has suddenly become a boring task instead of an
exciting experience.
Making sure that kids keep their passion for reading will require us to
rethink how we teach reading in schools and how we introduce books to
children outside of school as well. There needs to be less of a focus on
meeting reading requirements and more of a focus on creating an
environment in which students are actually excited to read.

Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like
tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby
Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school
garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help
students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy
lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and
green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber
grocery stores.“The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and
large bottles of soft drinks,” she says.“They come to us thinking
vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some
are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager
to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high
schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-
seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the
garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow,
and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of
the classes.“We have students who say they went home and talked to
their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some
students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start
their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to
have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many
of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,”she
says, “and they feel successful.”

Fairview Place neighbours will soon be getting “cool pavement (路
面)”— again — after the first time around didn’t go as planned.
“You would see little dog paw prints and shoe prints of the grey
coolant (冷却剂) all across the pavement,” said Kyle Callert.
In February, Phoenix’s Street Transportation Department held a
meeting with the Fairview Neighbourhood Association and local people to
explain that the mess was a result of trying out a new product. Moving
forward, the city promised to go back to using its original (最初的),
trusted product that has been found to be successful.
“The surface temperature, especially during the heat of the day,
is 10 to 12 degrees cooler than traditional asphalt (沥青).That’s
because it’s not collecting and storing heat like dark asphalt does, only
to give it off slowly at night,”said Heather Murphy from the Street
Transportation Department.
Neighbours who live between 15th and 17th Street and from
McDowell Road to Encanto Boulevard were given a survey with the choice
of going back to traditional asphalt. But the results came back, showing
more are in support of the cooler choice.Kyle Callert is excited about all it
has to offer, especially because his dog loves being outdoors.
“I would feel more comfortable walking if it was cooler in the
middle of the summer.Plus, it gives the neighbourhood a unique
look,” said Callert.
More neighbourhoods can also look forward to seeing that soon. The
Street Transportation Department says there will be 100 miles of “cool
pavement” in 11 neighbourhoods across the city by mid-June.
“This shows 20 degrees difference. So, I am a strong supporter of
‘cool pavement’,” said one local.

The oral exam (口试) is a long-held tradition in many schools and
subjects. 13 Students must then answer properly, using materials
they have learned in preparation for the exam.Showing plentiful
knowledge of the subject results in passing the exam or an excellent grade.
14 As part of the completion of a program at the undergraduate
or graduate levels, students might need to prove their knowledge and
understanding of a subject area. Many science majors finish Bachelor’s
studies with oral exams, or a particular program may require oral and
written exams that show how a student has taken in all the materials
learned in a four-year period.Usually study guides are available for these
exams. 15
One valuable tip for students to succeed is to practice before the
exam. 16 But by answering questions classmates or family ask them
students can do as many practices as possible. On the day of the exam,
students should dress plainly but respectfully, and in keeping with any
dress requirements.
Students taking these exams should remember how much they have
learned, which is hopefully quite a lot. 17 When waiting outside the
test room, taking a deep breath and reminding themselves that the oral
exam is a nice way to show off how much knowledge has been learned
from teachers can help overcome stressful moments. Also, any other
relaxation techniques that help can be used.
A. It raises questions to students in spoken form.
B. Behaving properly can earn students some favor.
C. They may not be able to predict all the questions.
D. Usually, students performing well are experienced.
E. Nervousness can even make the smartest student get stuck.
F. There are many examples in college where oral exams are used.
G. Therefore, prepared students tend not to be surprised by what
they’re asked.

合语境,A项中的questions呼应下文的answer,in spoken form呼应上
文的oral exam。
