A
As the world around them is changing, teenagers continue to need guidance and support from both parents.Studies show that teens who have an active relationship with their fathers are less likely to involve (牵涉) themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely to succeed in school and develop higher self-worth, because their fathers go beyond social expectations to devote attention to them.
Peer (同龄人) pressure has always been a big part of the teens’ experience.Even the best father can’t completely protect their kids from the growing influence of their peer group. However, studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example.
Teens may not like to admit it, but they are watching their parents closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just how important parents are, especially Dad.Swiss researchers discovered that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesn’t, 44 percent of the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kids continue to attend.
Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their late teens.Fathers don’t get to make those choices for them, but they can be influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot from their parents’ concern on what to do when they finish high school.Should they go directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job? A father’s guidance brings a long-term perspective that teens often lack to these important decisions.

Lovers of language and a little friendly competition have played the game of Scrabble (拼字游戏) for generations, but this best-selling board game has a lesser-known history, which began in our own backyard.
At the Queens Library at Fresh Meadows, a neighbourhood in New York City, three friends meet weekly.Lynne Sherman, Pauline Bekele and Mona Fabricant first got to know each other in retirement over a game of Scrabble. They’ve kept their relationships for years thanks to meetings with the library’s Scrabble Club.
Their friendly competitions take place just a few neighbourhoods away from a Scrabble landmark.Early versions of the game were first played in the social room at the Community United Methodist Church in Jackson Heights, a neighbourhood in the northwestern corner of Queens.Standing at that place is a Scrabble-style street sign with letters showing points, just like in the game.
“Only people who know about the game of Scrabble are going to know at once what it is, and that’s why it’s my favourite sign, because it’s unique,” said Jason D.Antos, the executive director of the Queens Historical Society.
A game of strategy requiring spelling skills, a bit of math and the luck of the draw, Scrabble has left its mark. But who is the mastermind behind the beloved board game?
Antos said the creator was Alfred Mosher Butts, a local man of Jackson Heights who loved mind games.Butts came up with the idea for the game during the Great Depression, when he was a jobless architect living in a fifth-floor walk-up.Wanting to put some bread on the table, he turned his attention to the game. The rights to the game were later bought in 1948 by James Brunot, a retired director of the War Relief Control Board. It was Brunot who gave the game its popular name, Scrabble.
Today, Scrabble is played in English from India to Senegal and is sold in more than 30 languages.Nigeria often wins international competitions. From a competitive sport to a mind-expanding (拓展思维的) exercise, the game means different things to different people.
Back at the library, there’s one reason above all to play Scrabble.
“Just — it’s fun,” Sherman said.
5.What can we learn about the game of Scrabble from Paragraph 2?
A.It is a favourite of the elderly.
B.It serves as a bridge of friendship.
C.It makes the Queens Library well-known.
D.It encourages different styles of board games.
6.What makes the street sign unique according to Antos?

When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid a tutor (家庭教师) forty dollars a week for her coming to my house and helping me with math.It ended up raising my marks from fifty to fifty-five.
I had to admit it was mainly my fault.Maybe I should have concentrated my math from the beginning. But studying math was a tough thing.Sitting on a chair to work on confusing math problems for two hours was a slow and painful process.During the process, I would fidget (坐立不安) and have many trips to the refrigerator in an attempt to get off that chair for at least five minutes.
During math tests, my teachers would always stay by my desk.My teachers and friends would frequently ask the question after tests, “How’s your math this time?” So I became extremely afraid of math. While normal people of my age were scared of some insects and adventurous travels, I feared anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class made me feel scared. The red marks on the test paper were also terrifying.
My fear of math got worse in ninth grade.Every report card I received from my new math teacher Ms Robbins had the comment to encourage me, “I’m glad to do what I can to help you.” But I couldn’t tell her the real reason why I didn’t ask for help — I didn’t want to be considered stupid.Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time, something that the whole class had understood but I.So instead, I ended up not caring about anything related to math, without working hard on math at all.And I concluded everything would work out in the end.
Eventually, my classmates and I took the final test that would lead to our graduation from middle school and stepping into high school.Days after the exam — on a rainy summer morning, Ms Robbins called me.

Mama and Her Bank Account①
[1]Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table
and count out② the money Papa had brought home.
“For the rent③.” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.
“For the groceries④.” Another group of coins.
“I’ll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine, my
brother Nels or me.
Mama would put one or two coins to the side.We would watch with
anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?” And when
Mama nodded, we could relax⑤ a little.Mama would look up and
smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.” We were all so
proud of⑥ Mama’s Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure⑦
feeling.
When Nels graduated⑧ from grammar school, he wanted to go on to
high school.“It will cost a little money,” he said.
Eagerly we gathered⑨ around the table.I took down a box and laid⑩
it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”.[2]It was
used for sudden emergencies , such as the time when Christine broke
her arm and had to be taken to a doctor.
Papa had brought home为省略了关系代词which/that的定语从句,修饰
先行词the money。
  [2]when引导定语从句,修饰先行词the time。
Nels listed the costs of the things he would need.Mama counted out
the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough.“We do not want to
go to the Bank,” she reminded. We all shook our heads .
“I will work in Dillon’s grocery after school,” Nels volunteered
.
Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a
number.“That’s not enough,” Papa said. Then he took his pipe out
of his mouth and looked at it for a long time.“I will give up smoking,”
he said suddenly.
Mama reached across the table and touched Papa’s arm. Then she
wrote down another figure .
“I will look after the Elvington children every Friday night,” I
said.“Christine can help me.”
Now there was enough money.[3]We all felt very good because we
did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama’s Bank
Account.
So many things came out of the Little Bank that year: Christine’s
dress for the school play, my little sister Dagmar’s
operation ...[4]Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the
Bank to depend upon .
we still had the Bank
to depend upon是省略了引导词that的宾语从句。
  That was twenty years ago.
Last year I sold my first story. When the check came, I hurried
over to Mama’s and put it in her lap .“For you,” I said, “to put
in your Bank Account.”
[5]I noticed for the first time how old Mama and Papa looked.Papa
seemed shorter, and Mama’s hair was silver now.
“Tomorrow,” I told Mama, “you must take it to the Bank.”
“You will go with me, Katrin?”
“That won’t be necessary.Just hand it to the teller. He’ll pay it
into your account .”
Mama looked at me.“There is no account,” she said.“In all my
life, I’ve never been inside a bank.”
  And when I didn’t — couldn’t — answer, Mama said
seriously, [6]“It is not good for little ones to be afraid — to not feel
secure.”
[5]how old Mama and Papa looked是宾语从句。for the first time
afraid — to not feel secure,破折号起解释说明的作用。

which has 17 short stories and describes the struggles and dreams of a
family in San Francisco in the early 1900s )

A
As the world around them is changing, teenagers continue to need
guidance and support from both parents.Studies show that teens who have
an active relationship with their fathers are less likely to involve (牵涉)
themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely to succeed in school
and develop higher self-worth, because their fathers go beyond social
expectations to devote attention to them.
Peer (同龄人) pressure has always been a big part of the teens’
experience.Even the best father can’t completely protect their kids from
the growing influence of their peer group. However, studies show that
teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵
抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example.
Teens may not like to admit it, but they are watching their parents
closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just
how important parents are, especially Dad.Swiss researchers discovered
that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesn’t, 44 percent of
the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom
goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kids
continue to attend.
Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their late
teens.Fathers don’t get to make those choices for them, but they can be
influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot from their parents’
concern on what to do when they finish high school.Should they go
directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to
trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job? A father’s
guidance brings a long-term perspective that teens often lack to these
important decisions.

Lovers of language and a little friendly competition have played the
game of Scrabble (拼字游戏) for generations, but this best-selling
board game has a lesser-known history, which began in our own
backyard.
At the Queens Library at Fresh Meadows, a neighbourhood in New
York City, three friends meet weekly.Lynne Sherman, Pauline Bekele
and Mona Fabricant first got to know each other in retirement over a game
of Scrabble. They’ve kept their relationships for years thanks to meetings
with the library’s Scrabble Club.
Their friendly competitions take place just a few neighbourhoods
away from a Scrabble landmark.Early versions of the game were first
played in the social room at the Community United Methodist Church in
Jackson Heights, a neighbourhood in the northwestern corner of
Queens.Standing at that place is a Scrabble-style street sign with letters
showing points, just like in the game.
“Only people who know about the game of Scrabble are going to
know at once what it is, and that’s why it’s my favourite sign,
because it’s unique,” said Jason D. Antos, the executive director of
the Queens Historical Society.
A game of strategy requiring spelling skills, a bit of math and the
luck of the draw, Scrabble has left its mark. But who is the mastermind
behind the beloved board game?
Antos said the creator was Alfred Mosher Butts, a local man of
Jackson Heights who loved mind games.Butts came up with the idea for
the game during the Great Depression, when he was a jobless architect
living in a fifth-floor walk-up.Wanting to put some bread on the table, he
turned his attention to the game. The rights to the game were later bought
in 1948 by James Brunot, a retired director of the War Relief Control
Board. It was Brunot who gave the game its popular name, Scrabble.
Today, Scrabble is played in English from India to Senegal and is
sold in more than 30 languages.Nigeria often wins international
competitions.From a competitive sport to a mind-expanding
的) exercise, the game means different things to different people.
Back at the library, there’s one reason above all to play Scrabble.
“Just — it’s fun,” Sherman said.

When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid a tutor (家庭教
师) forty dollars a week for her coming to my house and helping me with
math.It ended up raising my marks from fifty to fifty-five.
I had to admit it was mainly my fault.Maybe I should have
concentrated my math from the beginning. But studying math was a tough
thing.Sitting on a chair to work on confusing math problems for two hours
was a slow and painful process.During the process, I would fidget (坐
立不安) and have many trips to the refrigerator in an attempt to get off
that chair for at least five minutes.
During math tests, my teachers would always stay by my desk.My
teachers and friends would frequently ask the question after tests,
“How’s your math this time?” So I became extremely afraid of
math. While normal people of my age were scared of some insects and
adventurous travels, I feared anything to do with numbers. The thought
of a teacher picking on me in class made me feel scared. The red marks on
the test paper were also terrifying.
My fear of math got worse in ninth grade.Every report card I received
from my new math teacher Ms Robbins had the comment to encourage
me, “I’m glad to do what I can to help you.” But I couldn’t tell her
the real reason why I didn’t ask for help — I didn’t want to be
considered stupid.Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time,
something that the whole class had understood but I. So instead, I ended
up not caring about anything related to math, without working hard on
math at all.And I concluded everything would work out in the end.
Eventually, my classmates and I took the final test that would lead
to our graduation from middle school and stepping into high school.Days
after the exam — on a rainy summer morning, Ms Robbins called me.

With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office. After asking me to
sit down, she told me that I failed the math test. And she suggested that I
should spend another year in middle school if I wanted to be admitted to a
relatively good high school.I burst into tears when I heard the
news.Seeing that, Ms Robbins came to comfort and encourage me, and
said she’d like to offer any help if necessary. After leaving her office, I
was anxious, wondering how to tell the bad news to my parents.
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were
silent. My body shook, waiting for their blame. However, they
encouraged me to have another try in ninth grade. It was then that I
determined to take math seriously. The following day, I turned to Ms
Robbins for help and told her about my determination.Ms Robbins was
happy that I finally decided to work hard on math. Thanks to her patient
guidance, I made great progress and was not afraid of math any
more. Finally, I made my way to a good high school and a
university.Now I’m a doctor and I’m proud of myself.
