二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
Reviews for Top Gun 2: Maverick
Comments on Downton Abbey II: A New Era
9/10 Beautiful! cacaescher1 May 2022 What a masterpiece! I’m a fan from the series and I must admit that seeing the cast all together for all these years so happy and cheerful is a true blessing and we all must be so grateful. I went to the Movie Theater today and everyone was enjoying so much! People were always laughing at Maggie’s jokes and commenting on each scene... it’s pure excitement. I have no words to describe my love for Downton Abbey. 6/10 Mild guskeller21 May 2022 Downton Abbey: A New Era is simple escapism. The script emphasizes quantity over quality, parading numerous trivial plotlines rather than digging into any particular idea. Characters are hollowly pleasant because, ultimately, nothing is consequential. Easy entertainment has its audience, but some viewers might want tonal range, character depth, strong themes, or significant tension. The acting is charming enough and the soapy plot keeps moving, but Downton Abbey is more of a getaway than a journey. 4/10 Tired of fading characters Drabble5008 May 2022 I loved the Downton Abbey series and have re watched them during lockdown. The delightful fizz of the early series gradually began to fade out as they went on but they held us enraptured because we were invested in the characters. Roll on the show through two movies and it’s obvious that both the characters and the franchise have run out of steam. This is a plot which ultimately goes precisely nowhere, so that we’re left with a trip in the south of France (without the scenery) and a film within a film back at the house.
9.According to the critics, what makes Top Gun 2: Maverick praiseworthy
A.It outshines the previous movie in terms of character depth and plot complexity.
B.It provides insightful appreciation of life’s progress.
C.It lives up to audience’s expectations.
D.It is honest about its own shortcomings.
10.The word “enraptured” most probably means .
A.disappointed B.furious C.excited D.responsible
11.Which of the following statement is true
A.James speaks highly of the audio and visual effects of the new Top Gun movie.
B.Both guskeller21 and Catalina lay emphasis on a film’s substance and depth.
C.Drabble5008 prefers the big screen adaptations to the series.
D.Neither Louisa nor cacaescher1 presents comments in a balance way.
Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution (变革).
In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.

A.It is packed with complex codes. B.It adopts a down-to-earth writing style.
C.It provides step-by-step instructions. D.It is intended for AI professionals.
14.What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development
A.Observe existing regulations on it.
B.Reconsider expert opinions about it.
C.Make joint efforts to keep it under control.
D.Learn from prior experience to slow it down.
15.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To recommend a book on AI. B.To give a brief account of AI history.
C.To clarify the definition of AI. D.To honor an outstanding AI expert.
Childhood is a time of limitless possibilities. And old age is the time of wisdom. But for children who face the monster of cancer, their lives are fast-forwarded into profound wisdom. Not only do they have hand-to-hand struggle with the limits of life, they face it with raw truth and courage. For them, life is hard-won yet full of unbelievable hope, and is to be lived to the fullest.
We have much to learn from these children.
That’s what art therapist, Lisa Murray, believed as she worked to help children with cancer to release their feelings through their drawings, which have turned into a book, Angels & Monsters.
Murray found that in their struggle, kids would tell her constantly, “I’m just a regular kid; I just want to play, to go to school, to go outside ... I just happen to have cancer.”
She was moved and inspired by their simple will to survive. The children were facing the disease head on. She saw some powerful images in their artwork. “What courage does it take to do that ” said Murray.
Murray selected 25 children aged 13 months to 18 years. She asked the four-year-olds and up, “If you could tell the world what it is like to have cancer, what would you say, what would you draw ” For two-to three-year-olds, she asked, “What do you want to tell people about yourself ” And for the youngest, she just took their handprints. It’s such a human expression, “Here’s my mark,” said Murray.
She then asked them about their pictures and wrote down exactly what they said. This gave the artwork a powerful voice. Coupled with Murray’s photographs of the children in the book, the three forms of expression leave both a permanent record and lasting impression with the viewer.
As a therapist, Murray doesn’t give the kids the impression that the drawing process is right or wrong. Whatever they draw is unconditionally acceptable. “Children play, they draw, and that’s the natural language of children. That’s why art therapy is so wonderful,” she said.
16.What are children with cancer like in the eyes of Murray
A.They are energetic and active. B.They are wise and hardworking.
C.They are courageous and optimistic. D.They are thoughtful and kind-hearted.
17.What does Murray do in the process of the children drawing pictures
A.She lets them draw whatever they like.
B.She teaches them how to draw naturally.
C.She gives them advice about what to draw.
D.She makes sure what they draw are acceptable.
18.What does the underlined “the three forms of expression” refer to
A.Their drawings, their voices and the book.
B.Their drawings, their handprints and the book.
C.Their drawings, their words and the photos of them.
D.Their drawings, Murray’s questions and the children’s answers.

A recent trend in the entertainment world is to adapt classic works of literature for either TV plays or the movies. One argument is that this is to everyone’s benefit,as it introduces people to works they might otherwise never have experienced, while others say that turning books into movies not only cheapens the original, but is rarely done successfully. So what do you think
In the past few years,we have seen several classic works of literature were adapted into movies. Many people believe that turning a novel into a film is a great idea, but some obviously think otherwise.According to the latter, translating classic works into movies destroys its originality and credibility. In my opinion, literary works can get translated into the screens effectively.
The main challenge that filmmakers face while turning a classic work into a movie is its imaginary world.Generally, the perception(见解) of the book’s imaginary world differs from person to person. And it’s quite challenging to put all these different perceptions in one frame. But modern technology has made this challenge achievable. For example, the filmmakers used visual effects to successfully adapt “Harry Potter” movies so visually attractive that their perception of “Harry Potter” changed. Therefore, literary works can be translated into films through technical means.
Also, while making a film, the main focus of makers always remains on the main plotline and characters. But for movies based on literary works, this issue is not there as these movies carry the same basic plotline as it is present in the books. Therefore, directors do not have to spend much time and imagination on the plot of the movie, which makes the adaptation quite easy.
Based on the above arguments,I believe that it is quite possible to make a beautiful movie based on a classic work using modern technologies and a writer’s imagination.
19.What does “the latter” in the second paragraph refer to
A.People who can translate literary works into the screens.
B.People who often enjoy reading classic works of literature into screens.
C.People who think it’s not a good idea to adapt classic works of literature into screens.
D.People who agree with adapting classic works of literature into screens.
20.What is the main difficulty when adapting classics into screens according to the author
A.Adapting literary works into films effectively.
B.Presenting the imaginary of classic works on screens.
C.The different perception of the book’s imaginary world.
D.The use of modern technology in adapting classic works.
21.Why does the author mention the adaption of Harry Potter
A.To present an example to prove that classic works is out of date.
B.To confirm adapting classic works into screens is really important.
C.To describe the successful use of modern technology in making films.
D.To prove that adapting literary works into screens can be successful.
22.What is the author’s attitude towards adapting classics
A.Critical. B.Objective.
C.Indifferent. D.Supportive.

二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
Yes, study comes hard to you, my dear Enrico, as your mother says. I do not yet see you set out for school with that determined mind and that smiling face which I should like. You are still stubborn. But listen; reflect a little! What a miserable thing your day would be if you did not go to school! At the end of a week you would beg with tears that you might return there, for you would be eaten up with boredom and shame; disgusted with your sports and with your existence.
Everybody, everybody studies now, my child. Think of the workmen who go to school in the evening after having worked hard all the day; think of the women, of the girls, of the people, who go to school on Sunday, after having worked all the week; of the soldiers who turn to their books and copy-books when they return exhausted from their drill! Think of the dumb and of the boys who are blind, but who study, nevertheless. Think of the innumerable boys who, at nearly this precise hour, are going to school in all countries. Behold them with your imagination, alone, in couples, in groups, in long lines, all with their books under their arms, dressed in a thousand ways, speaking a thousand tongues, from the most remote schools in Russia almost lost in the ice to the furthermost schools of Arabia, shaded by palm-trees, millions and millions, all going to learn the same things, in a hundred varied forms. Imagine this vast, vast crowd of boys of a hundred races, this great movement of which you form a part, and think, if this movement were to cease, humanity would fall back into barbarism (野蛮); this movement is the progress, the hope, the glory of the world.
Courage, then, little soldier of the immense (庞大的) army. Your books are your arms, your class is your squadron(中队), the field of battle is the whole earth, and the victory is human civilization. Be not a cowardly soldier, my Enrico.

Video games can spend hours intensely focused on leveling up — progressing to the next level of skill and challenge- in a virtual world, while their everyday troubles fade into the background. Called “flow”, this profoundly immersive state is familiar to artists, musicians and athletes, and has become a popular topic in the media. But video game scholar Braxton Soderman urges caution.
In his new book, Against Flow: Video Games and the Flowing Subject, Soderman aims to “create a little turbulence (湍流) in the smooth flow.” Among his criticisms of flow in relation to video gaming is that it can be used to manipulate (操纵) players for profit and socially isolate them.
“Developers of video games and apps design their technologies specifically in order to produce these intense states of concentration, to addict people to these kinds of experiences,” says Soderman. Money, of course, is the driving force behind most game design, not happiness.
Soderman has played video games almost his entire life, but as the father of two young children, he’s careful to limit the types of games and amount of time his kids spend on video games.
As with flow, Soderman worries that the concepts of play are already being manipulated by capitalism. Business owners, he says, arc being encouraged to use play and creativity to establish “playgrounds of profit” instead of creating more open, inclusive environments that actually make people happier.
“Play is an activity that is really about creativity, exploring possibilities, and freedom,” he says. “But it can be hijacked (操纵) and used in a wrong way”.
The concept of play, like flow, is one that Soderman will challenge us all to step back and think about critically. Because, as he shows in Against Flow, getting lost in a video game for a while can be fun, as long as you don’t end up swept away in a lonely current of someone else’ s profit.
20.What’s a key sign of video games being in a “flow” state
A.Profound interest in arts and music.
B.Increased focus on everyday troubles.
C.Persistent engagement in online chatting.

A.It’s subject to capitalist influence.

23.What is the text most likely to be
A.A review of recent video game research.
B.A report about game development practices.
C.An introduction to a newly published book.
D.An essay on the concepts of “flow” and “play”.

B.Presenting the imaginary of classic works on screens.
C.The different perception of the book’s imaginary world.
D.The use of modern technology in adapting classic works.
26.Why does the author mention the adaption of Harry Potter

B.To confirm adapting classic works into screens is really important.

Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World is one of the most important books about climate change to have been written. Hayhoe is a gifted public speaker and Saving Us is a follow-up to her awesome TED talk in 2018, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it.”
One of the many refreshing aspects of this book is that Hayhoe recounts both her successes and her failures to communicate, through which she has gathered evidence about what works and what does not. Much of the book’s advice is common sense, all backed up not just by Hayhoe’s experience but also with convincing research by psychologists and social scientists.
Hayhoe advises against trying to engage with a small minority, the “Dismissives”, who “angrily reject the idea that human-caused climate change is a threat; they are most receptive to misinformation and conspiracy theories (阴谋论)”. There is a warning that offering up more facts about climate change can actually increase polarisation (两极化) among them.
The book includes amusing examples of her encounters with the “Dismissives”, almost entirely older men—including an engineer who was unconvinced about the evidence but with whom she was able to establish mutual (相互的) respect through a shared passion for knitting (打毛线衣) —and is packed with inspiring accounts of how she has won over even the most suspicious of crowds. Her motto is “bond, connect and inspire”, which represents her approach of always looking for points of commonality.
She also tells of a man who approached her after an event in London in 2019. He had been so inspired by her TED talk that he had started to speak to everybody he could in his neighborhood of Wandsworth. He showed her details of 12, 000 conversations that had taken place as a result, claiming that they had helped to convince the government to declare a climate emergency and to switch investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
And so, while it may feel difficult to influence the outcome of the COP26, Hayhoe’s uplifting book makes a persuasive case that we can all do our bit to bring about success just by talking about the issue.
28.What does the book mainly focus on
A.Promoting people’s insight into climate change.
B.Introducing presentation skills with TED talks.
C.Developing critical thinking through literature.
D.Sharing communication tips on climate change.
29.Which of the following best describes the advice in the book
A.Humorous but one-sided. B.Novel and interesting.
C.Well-based and workable. D.Serious and hard to follow.
30.How did Hayhoe win over the “Dismissives”
A.By changing their political identity.
B.By challenging their fundamental beliefs.
C.By seeking common ground built on a shared interest.
D.By providing more facts about climate change.
31.What does the author intend to say by telling the story in paragraph 5
A.The shift to clean energy is unstoppable.
B.Conversations can influence climate decision-making.
C.Policymakers turn a blind eye to market changes.
D.We should call on people to prepare for the climate crisis.

He showed her details of 12, 000 conversations that had taken place as a result, claiming that they had helped to convince the government to declare a climate emergency and to switch investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy. 和最后一段中“Hayhoe’s uplifting book makes a persuasive case that we can all do our bit to bring about success just by talking about the issue.

Sam is a fourth-year student at Harvard Medical School, but poetry is still a big part of his life, now with a new teacher,Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter(邂逅)with my patients. I think healing is really in a very great way about poetry. And if we do anything when we’re with our patients,we’re really immersing(使沉浸于)ourselves in their stories, really hearing their voices. And,certainly, that’s what a poem does,”he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today:humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that,he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents(住院医生).
He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said. “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest. ”Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do,though.
Rafael said,“I was afraid of how people might judge me,actually. In the medical profession,as many people know,we must always put the emergency first. But,you know, that kind of treatment,if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there ”
In a poem titled“Health”,Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.

Chinese people love food made of flour. In the hands of skilled artisans (手艺人), flour is made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which brings a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called dough figurine (面塑). Among the various art styles of dough figurines, Beijing’s Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. In 2008, it was included in the list of national intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage.
It was created by Lang Shao’an. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished product is either put at the end of a thin stick or on a table for display. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are fine pieces of artwork for display only. For this reason, during the making process they are often mixed with additives (添加剂)to better preserve the finished products.
Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor (继承人) of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Beijing Olympic Mascot (吉祥物) shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons (偶像) are popular with young people.
Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Few young people are willing to take the time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.;
19.What is special about Dough Figurine Lang

B.It is created by many famous artists.
C.It shows people’s lifestyles and beliefs.
D.It is popular with both tourists and the locals.;

A.To call on people to master a skill
B.To appeal to people to value this folk art

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two young men from Germany who loved a good story. As university students, they became interested in folktales—traditional stories that people memorized and told again and again. They began to collect traditional folktales from storytellers all over Germany. Many were similar to stories told in France, Italy, Japan, and other countries. Between 1812 and 1814, the brothers published two books in German. These included stories like "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood."
Despite the fact that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are often associated with Snow White and Rapunzel, the brothers didn’t actually write any of those stories. In fact, the stories existed long before the two men were born in Germany in the mid 1780s. The fairy tales, in fact, were part of a rich oral tradition—passed down from generation to generation, often by women seeking to pass the time during household chores. In 1812, Jacob and Wilhelm published the stories as part of a collection titled Nursery and Household Tales, or what is now known as Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
The Grimm brothers’ tales were about traditional life and beliefs. For example, forests are common in Germany, and this image often appears in the Grimms’ stories. In the past, many people believed forests were dangerous places. In the Grimms’ stories, a forest is the home of evil witches, talking animals, and other magical beings.
Although most people today think of these stories as fairy tales for children, the brothers first wrote them for adults. Many of their early tales were dark and a little scary. Later, the brothers changed the text of some of the original stories. They "softened" many of the tales and added drawings. This made them more appropriate(合适的) for children. Like the early tales, though, each story still has a moral: work hard, be good, and listen to your parents.
Actually, university-trained philologists (语言学者) and librarians, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published more than fairy tales. They wrote books about mythology, and published scholarly works on linguistics and medieval studies.

Our school will organize an “English Poetry Creation” competition with the theme of “Dream” for our students next Monday. Being the organizer of this competition, I have difficulty in formulating the rules and evaluating entries. I hope you can help me out of your busy schedule.
Because of your professionalism, you can not only take responsibility for modifying the grammar and poetry rules of entries, but also give me some suggestions. I believe with your help, this competition will be a complete success.
I would greatly appreciate it if I could get your help.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
