M: Prioritize speed improvement. And add a progress bar with funny animations to reduce frustration.
W: Agreed. Should we test these changes in the beta version next week
M: Yes. Let’s also collect feedback through in-app surveys. Oh, and check if the payment process is smoother now.
W: Will do. If this works, our user stay rate should double by next month!

【原文】
M: There was a beautiful garden with some flowers and a tree. Both the flowers and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knows that the flowers and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The flowers hated the tree’s shadow, because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the flowers because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live. The situation became so serious that the flowers decided to run out of all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree fought back by not protecting the flowers from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the flowers were really weak, and the tree was drying up. The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the flowers realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to the garden, watering and fertilizing (施肥于) it better than any other patch (小块土地) for miles around.

On February 20, the science fiction magazine Clarkesworld was forced to stop accepting any new articles from writers after it was flooded with AI-written stories.
“By the time we closed on the 20th, we had received 500 human-written stories and 700 AI-written ones,” said editor-in-chief Neil Clarke. “It was increasing at such a speed that we figured that by the end of the month, we would have doubled the number of articles we normally have. The rate had been growing from previous months, and we were concerned that we had to do something to stop it.”
Worries about AI misuse have frequently appeared in headlines recently, particularly since the launch of ChatGPT in November, 2022, which can not only answer a broad range of questions, but also create original poems and stories.
Clarke said magazines like his, which pay contributors for their work, were being targeted by people trying to make quick money. He said he had already spoken to editors of other magazines and that all of them had agreed to stop accepting AI-written articles. He also admitted that the humor of his sci-fi magazine being targeted by AI robots is not lost on him.
“You know, our mascot (吉祥物) is a robot. So we see the irony,” he said. “But the thing is that science fiction is often intended to give a warning to people. We don’t celebrate technology just because it exists. We want to make sure that we’re using it right. And there are some significant legal and moral issues around this technology that we’re not ready to accept.
Clarke said the magazine didn’t know how to deal with the issue, and part of the motivation to speak out was in the hope of finding some solutions. He also said the quality of the AI-written stories was very poor.
24. What’s the matter with the magazine Clarkesworld
A. It will close down forever. B. It was targeted by AI writers.
C. It stopped paying contributors. D. It has lost many good authors.
25. What can we infer about other magazines’ attitude to the AI-written stories
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Unknown. D. Tolerant.
26. What does Neil Clarke say about science fiction
A. It often intends to find some solutions.
B. It welcomes the existing new technologies.
C. It will accept AI-written stories in the near future.
D. It often tries to warn the dark side of technologies.
27. Where is this text most likely from
A. A notice. B. A science fiction. C. A news report. D. A book review.

3M and Discovery Education announced Sean Jiang from Gilman School as one of the top ten finalists from across the nation for the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It’s a competition that encourages students to identify an everyday problem and submit a video showing the science behind the solution he or she came up with.
14-year-old Jiang decided to help those who can’t see. Blind people had a hard time navigating (导航) objects that are medium to far range. So Jiang wanted to design something to give them a heads-up on obstacles (障碍) that may be incoming.
Jiang’s inspiration came from the powers of the hearing system. “I learned in school that bats and whales are able to use echolocation (回声定位) to help them navigate and just use their sense of hearing and I also saw on YouTube some very skilled blind people that use echolocation to help them walk,” said Jiang.
Jiang started with a virtual reality setting and then made it a reality. His creation uses a depth camera that can detect how close objects are, thus giving enough time to dodge the obstacles. When a blind is walking with the device, the sensor of the depth camera gathers the information regarding the obstacles’ position and distance. Then the AI system in it will turn the distance data into musical sound guidance. This could significantly increase the walking speed of a blind person as well as decrease the number of obstacles they hit.
Some other similar programs were alright at finding objects that were in close range, but Jiang still wanted the blind to experience the world even fuller so they were able to see stuff that was much further away than their circle of reach.
In October, the top ten finalists will compete in person in Minneapolis for the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and a $ 25, 000 prize.
28. What can we learn about Jiang from the first two paragraphs
A. He was the champion of the 2023 3M event.
B. He invented technology to remove road obstacles.
C. He sought to assist the blind in walking smoothly.
D. He developed a new navigation app for his school.
29. Why did Jiang mention “echolocation”
A. To show the development of technology. B. To present the difficulties the blind face.
C. To stress the significance of hearing. D. To explain the inspiration of his invention.
30. What does the underlined word “dodge” mean in paragraph 4
A. Avoid. B. Encounter. C. Challenge. D. Remove.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. 3M facilities intended for the blind. B. A teen using sound to help the blind.
C. An invention to cure vision problems. D. A competition to improve the blind’s life.

Chinese Teapot Escaping from British Museum Goes Viral
Chinese state media has praised a viral video series telling the story of a jade teapot coming to life and fleeing the British Museum to make its way back home.
The set of three short videos, entitled Escape from the British Museum, shows the teapot turning into a young woman in a green dress, who then engages a London-based Chinese journalist to help her reunite with her family. It appears to have struck a chord (弦) in China after first being released by independent vloggers on Douyin. By Monday evening, it had reportedly received more than 310 million views. The plot line taps into growing Chinese criticism of the British Museum after reports last month that more than 1,500 priceless objects, including gold jewelry, semi-precious stones and glass, were missing, stolen or damaged.
In August the state media Global Times called for the return of Chinese artifacts from the museum “free of charge” in the wake of the controversy. “The huge holes in the management and security of cultural objects in the British Museum exposed by this scandal (丑闻) have led to the collapse of a long-standing and widely circulated claim that ‘foreign cultural objects are better protected in the British Museum’,” it said. It strongly supported the video series for touching on a “powerful message” about the importance of cultural heritage and reflecting “Chinese people’s desiring for the repatriation of the Chinese cultural relics.”
State broadcaster CCTV also gave the short films a glowing review saying: “We are very pleased to see Chinese young people are passionate about history and tradition... We are also looking forward to the early return of Chinese artifacts that have been displayed overseas.”
The museum scandal made headlines around the world and reawakened earlier demands by the Chinese media to restore the country’s relics. The new three-part show has triggered a wave of nationalism among viewers, with many praising the creative plot that reduced them to tears by showing how the teapot experienced the happiness of returning to China to see pandas and watch a flag-raising ceremony on Tiananmen Square.
32. What excuse does Britain give for keeping other nations’ cultural objects in its museum
A. It has taken possession of these objects by all lawful means.
B. These objects are safer and taken better care of in its museum.
C. It is requested by other nations to protect their cultural objects.
D. These objects may come to life, flee their countries and go viral.
33. What does the underlined word “repatriation”(Para.3) probably mean
A. Repair. B. Reflection. C. Reserve. D. Return.
34. Which of the following can we infer from the passage
A. China had already demanded the restoration of its cultural relics before the scandal.
B. The museum’s awful management and security systems are involved in the scandal.
C. The Britain Museum is under pressure to return the cultural relics to China sooner or later.
D. A London-based Chinese journalist has contributed a lot to the viral three-part video series.
35. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To appeal to Britain to return China’s cultural objects.
B. To introduce a viral video series about a fleeing jade teapot.
C. To arouse readers’ concern about Chinese cultural objects abroad.
D. To praise Chinese young people’s passion for history and tradition.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Books often struggle to engage modern readers, and this can be especially true for nonfiction. For many people, it’s less exciting and less emotional than fiction. However, the problem may not be with nonfiction, but how they read it.
Some people start a nonfiction book but quit after reading a few chapters. They read probably because someone gives them the book or everyone is reading it. That’s not helpful to stay in a committed relationship with nonfiction. 36 No matter what yours is, write it down before starting to read. It’ll prepare your mind on what to look for in that book.
If you’re already a fiction reader, start with narrative nonfiction, which carries a strong storytelling element. This kind of writing is so engaging that you may almost forget the story being told is factual. 37 However, if you still feel burdened by an entire book, an anthology (选集) might be a perfect solution. As collections of shorter pieces, anthologies aim to bring together the best writing on a particular subject. 38 Once you’re drawn in, you’ll find more to read.
39 For those who prefer highlighting and taking notes, a physical book may be a nice choice. In contrast, e-books are ideal if portability (便携性) or the ability to adjust the text are your priorities. However, if you’re already a listener to nonfiction recorded programs, audio books might be the perfect fit for you.
Reading nonfiction can be challenging, but remember there’s always a book on the topic that interests you. It may be about historical events that shape our lives or stories where truth outshines fiction. 40
A. So it requires a personal insight into the book.
B. Some of the pieces are sure to grab your interest.
C. It’s a natural bridge between fiction and nonfiction.
D. Instead, you should have a clear objective of reading.
E. Reading habits affect our selections of nonfiction topics.
F. Choosing suitable formats is also key to enjoying nonfiction.
G. Whichever it is, the time spent on nonfiction can be rewarding.

【答案】
Dear Brian,
Thank you for sharing your Campus First Aid Guide! I’m truly impressed by it, which covers essential skills clearly. The illustrations are helpful, especially when they show how to handle bleeding.
However, I have two suggestions to improve it. First, since many students may be unfamiliar with professional terms, could you add a section that explains them in simple language at the end Second, it would be better if you could put in some pictures that show proper first aid positions.
Overall, Your work is valuable, and I believe it will benefit many students.
Yours,
Li Hua

Sean Royston, and his long-time friend, Tolin Annis had a tradition to head out for an expedition every other year. In 2016, they decided to kayak (划皮艇) the Rocks National Lakeshore, a challenging route on Lake Superior, teibentrti tuo bobson l rast ouodern.
On September 13, they loaded up on food and camping devices, climbed into their kayaks, and pushed off from a beach near the national park’s headquarters. They planned to return in a week. They moved through small waves and headed northeast. Soon the lake shore’s trademark cliffs (悬崖) began to rise on their right. Away from the shore, the head wind grew to the forecasted 10 knots — and kept rising. Still, they never considered turning around.
They had been rowing maybe 90 minutes when, quite suddenly, the waves grew to two metres and steepened. The wind rose to an intense 20 knots, putting them in danger of flipping over. “It went bad fast!” shouted Tolin, who was in the lead about 20 metres ahead of Sean. Meanwhile, the wind pushed them closer to the cliff, where the waves became even steeper and rolled them into the water.
Sean managed to get back to kayak, holding onto it for stability, and then paddled using his free hand. But he couldn’t make any progress against the strong wind. “My arms are giving out.” Sean thought to himself, “I gotta call now.” Using a VHF radio clipped to his life jacket, Sean called: “Mayday, two kayakers stuck.” But the tall cliffs blocked the signal from reaching anyone. When he raised his head, his friend had disappeared from sight. The man yelled to his friend at the top of his lungs, but there’s no reply.
Sean struggled until the waves finally pushed him away from the shoreline and farther out in the lake. Exhausted, he floated on his back and considered his options. Sean decided to turn downwind, towards the beach where they had launched that morning. It was 5 kilometers away. “I’m a swimmer.” Sean talked himself up and started kicking.

Luckily, after about three hours, Sean saw the beach within reach. With his last strength, he pulled and kicked against the crashing waves, his lungs burning and limbs numb. Collapsing onto the sand, he gasped for air, but he knew the clock was ticking. “I must hurry up to save Tolin!” he muttered. Dragging his trembling feet, he headed toward the park headquarters, shouting, “One man is drowning along the cliff! Help!” Rangers heard him and rushed him inside for treatment, calling for the rescue team at the same time.
The rescue team headed out immediately for Tolin. A helicopter soared over the cliffs, its spotlight piercing through the rain. Suddenly, a faint whistle echoed — Tolin hung on to a rock, waving his arm. A rescuer on the rope approached him carefully, and then pulled him up aboard, wrapping him in a blanket. Minutes later, they took Tolin back to the headquarters to reunite with his friend. Sean held Tolin tight, tears streaming down his face. “Thank goodness you’ re fine,” Sean said, gripping his friend’s shoulders. Tolin nodded, “Your bravery and determination saved us.”
