Have you ever made your life look a little more charming than it actually is by posting beautified things on social media? If so, you may be damaging your mental health.
The posts we make on social media platforms allow us to look back and see what we did on a given day.But what happens when, in an effort to impress our online friends, photos and videos we post become beautified versions of the things we did?
A young girl named Sophia went out to a romantic anniversary dinner with her boyfriend, had a near relationship-ending fight during dessert, and then came home and posted, “Had the best time out with the love of my life!” — even with a photo of the meal.No surprise, but according to a new study, Sophia was by no means unique.Two-thirds of users admit lying about their lives on social media with 20 per cent of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 stating that they edit their own stories by frequently lying about relationships and promotions.
By beautifying our online stories, we are harming our memories. We start believing the stories we tell rather than remembering what really happened.Soon, the real experiences are lost and all that remains is the beautified versions of history.
Scientists fear that these edited stories will end up changing our memories. It’s well confirmed through research that our own memories are often unreliable and can be easily controlled.Writing down one’s life in the form of a journal, or even on social media can help us keep our memories undamaged, but only if we tell the truth. So recording our experiences through whatever medium, to later recall lessons we learnt, is not only acceptable but desirable. In fact, looking back on our own past — however embarrassing or uncomfortable — is not just healthy but can be enjoyable.
1.Why did Sophia post her story with a photo of the meal?( )
A.To make her post attractive.
B.To show her photography skill.
C.To convince others of her story.
D.To show how enjoyable the meal was.
2.In what kind of tone did the writer write the text?( )
A.Encouraging. B.Critical.
C.Humorous. D.Enthusiastic.
3.What don’t many people realize in the last paragraph?( )
A.Recalling the unpleasant past can also be enjoyable.
B.Writing down our lives on social media does no good to us.
C.Recording experiences through media is unacceptable.
D.Recording our experiences through media is beneficial.
4.What lesson can be drawn from the text?( )
A.Leaving others a good impression is desirable.
B.Editing our online stories weakens our memory.
C.Posting our experiences on social media is risky.
D.Beautifying our history ends up hurting ourselves.

(2024·南京协同体七校高一期中联考) Technoference (科技入侵) is defined as everyday interruptions (打扰) in face-to-face interactions because of technological devices.Studies showed that parents use devices for nine hours per day on average.Smartphones are often used during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime — all important times involved in shaping a child’s emotional well-being.When parents are on their devices, they have fewer conversations with their children, and pay less attention to them.
In one study, 172 two-parent families with a child aged 5 years or younger answered online questionnaires about family relationships.Participants showed how often different devices interrupted their activities with their children. The parents rated their child’s behaviour, such as how often they got upset or how easily their feelings were hurt. They also reported on their own levels of stress and depression, the support they received from their partners, and their child’s screen media use.
In almost all cases, devices were part of parent-child interactions during the day.Technology may serve as a refuge for parents who have to deal with difficult child behaviour. However, it has its drawbacks.
Electronic device use means parents can’t provide meaningful emotional support and positive feedback to their children, which causes behaviour such as crying. But this adds to parents’ stress levels.Parents are likely to spend more time with their technological products, and the cycle continues.“These results showed that relationships between parent technoference and child behaviour influence each other over time,” said McDaniel.“Parents who have children with behavioural problems become more stressed, which may lead to them using technology more, which in turn may contribute to more problems with their children.”
So, it seems like the best solution to a difficult relationship between a parent and his or her child would be to simply spend more time with each other, and less time on their smartphones or computers.
5.What do the first paragraph tell us about “technoference” ?( )
A.It makes life more convenient.
B.It stops people from thinking independently.
C.It brings children more leisure activities at home.
D.It affects communication among family members.
6.What were the parents asked to do in the study?( )
A.Answer some questions about their family relationships.
B.Use devices together with their children for several hours.
C.Observe how their children use technological devices daily.
D.List the benefits and problems of using technological devices.
7.What does the underlined word “drawbacks” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?( )
A.Effects. B.Disadvantages.
C.Benefits. D.Functions.
8.What does the writer suggest parents do?( )
A.Have more face-to-face quality time with their children.
B.Keep relaxed when their children use electronic devices.
C.Play with technological devices together with their children.
D.Encourage their children to spend more time playing outside.

Kindness comes in many forms. That thought is behind the new website, A Gift of Kindness, which promotes sharing stories of good deeds, all in memory of Captain Sir, Tom Moore, who passed away at the age of 100.
Being a hero of the pandemic, Moore decided to raise money for the National Health Services (NHS) in England. On 6 April 2020, at the age of 99, Moore promised to raise £1,000 by his 100th birthday. In the course of 24 days, Moore made media appearances and became a beloved popular figure, attracting more than 1.5 million individual donations. Finally, Moore raised £32.79 million for the NHS.
Now, Moore’s family is making his spirit a lasting effect by building a website called A Gift of Kindness. The idea came to Sir Tom’s daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore while she was eating with her family around the dinner table on a recent evening, according to The Washington Post. They were discussing how Moore’s fans continued to send warm wishes.
Since the website started on 8 December 2022, thousands of entries have poured in.Ingram-Moore picks each one and posts some of them to the site.“The website passes on Moore’s spirit serving as a message board for telling stories of kindness, and sharing joy and hope with others by recalling any small gift of kindness towards you or someone you know and how that feels,” the website states.“This has traveled across the Atlantic,” Ingram-Moore said in The Washington Post. The stories emphasize that “the things we do every day have a huge impact”.
“While my father is deeply missed by me and his grandchildren,so much of our life is devoted to making sure that his spirit lives on,”Ingram-Moore continued.“We call ourselves Team Tom.”

We’ve all done it.For many of us, it’s something that happens so naturally every day. After working on an important project or a task for a little while, you decide to take a break — only to pick up your smartphone and start looking through social media, reading emails, checking out the news and maybe getting in a quick round of “Candy Crush Saga”.A break is supposed to be a time to relax so that you can go back to your work feeling fresh. However, a new study finds that cellphone use during a mental break doesn’t really allow the brain to relax and can actually result in a poorer performance.
For the study,a group of 422 undergraduate students at Rutgers were assigned a set of 20 word puzzles to complete.Halfway through the task, the students were separated into three groups: one group took a break and were told to use their cellphones to go shopping online, another group took a break and were instructed to shop either via their computers or using a paper circular (印刷品广告), and the third group didn’t take a break at all.
Interestingly, the group that took a break with their cellphones displayed the highest levels of mental fatigue (疲劳), and had the hardest time solving the word puzzles following their breaks. In all, the cellphone group took 19% longer to finish the puzzle task, and solved 22% fewer problems than participants in the other two groups combined.
“The act of reaching for your phone between tasks, or the mid-task, is becoming more common. We assume it’s no different from any other break — but the phone may carry increasing levels of distraction that make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks,” explains Terri Kurtzberg.
13.Why do people turn to smartphone after a big task?( )
A.To get relaxed. B.To keep informed.
C.To achieve help. D.To make a phone all.
14.How was the study conducted?( )
A.By asking questions.
B.By interviewing lots of people.
C.By studying different lifestyles.
D.By studying different ways of breaks.
15.What does the study suggest?( )
A.Breaks are unnecessary.
B.Students are addicted to smartphones.
C.Smartphones distract people’s attention.
D.Paper circulars improve work efficiency.
16.What might be the purpose of the author?( )
A.To share a story.
B.To present a finding.
C.To solve a problem.
D.To prove a theory.

根据第三段中的by building a website called A Gift of Kindness. The idea came to Sir Tom’s daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore while she was eating with her family around the dinner table on a recent evening可知,一次家庭讨论让Hannah Ingram-Moore想到了建网站。
The website passes on Moore’s spirit serving as a message board for telling stories of kindness ...how that feels可知,建立网站的目的是让Tom Moore的精神延续下去。
This has traveled across the Atlantic可推断,该网站很有影响力。
根据最后一段中的the phone may carry increasing levels of distraction that make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks可知,这项研究表明智能手机会分散人们的注意力。
However, a new study finds that cellphone use during a mental break doesn’t really allow the brain to relax and can actually result in a poorer performance.

Talk to your current or past teachers.Ask them for tips about how to improve your quality of learning.

Have you ever made your life look a little more charming than it
actually is by posting beautified things on social media? If so, you may
be damaging your mental health.
The posts we make on social media platforms allow us to look back
and see what we did on a given day.But what happens when, in an effort
to impress our online friends, photos and videos we post become
beautified versions of the things we did?
A young girl named Sophia went out to a romantic anniversary dinner
with her boyfriend, had a near relationship-ending fight during dessert,
and then came home and posted, “Had the best time out with the love of
my life!” — even with a photo of the meal.No surprise, but according
to a new study, Sophia was by no means unique.Two-thirds of users
admit lying about their lives on social media with 20 per cent of young
people between the ages of 18 and 24 stating that they edit their own
stories by frequently lying about relationships and promotions.
By beautifying our online stories, we are harming our memories. We
start believing the stories we tell rather than remembering what really
happened.Soon, the real experiences are lost and all that remains is the
beautified versions of history.
Scientists fear that these edited stories will end up changing our
memories. It’s well confirmed through research that our own memories
are often unreliable and can be easily controlled.Writing down one’s life
in the form of a journal, or even on social media can help us keep our
memories undamaged, but only if we tell the truth. So recording our
experiences through whatever medium, to later recall lessons we learnt,
is not only acceptable but desirable. In fact, looking back on our own
past — however embarrassing or uncomfortable — is not just healthy but
can be enjoyable.

1. Why did Sophia post her story with a photo of the meal?( )
A. To make her post attractive.
B. To show her photography skill.
C. To convince others of her story.
D. To show how enjoyable the meal was.
2. In what kind of tone did the writer write the text?( )
A. Encouraging. B. Critical.
C. Humorous. D. Enthusiastic.
3. What don’t many people realize in the last paragraph?( )
A. Recalling the unpleasant past can also be enjoyable.
B. Writing down our lives on social media does no good to us.
C. Recording experiences through media is unacceptable.
D. Recording our experiences through media is beneficial.

4. What lesson can be drawn from the text?( )
A. Leaving others a good impression is desirable.
B. Editing our online stories weakens our memory.
C. Posting our experiences on social media is risky.
D. Beautifying our history ends up hurting ourselves.

入侵) is defined as everyday interruptions (打扰) in face-to-face
interactions because of technological devices.Studies showed that parents
use devices for nine hours per day on average.Smartphones are often used
during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime — all
important times involved in shaping a child’s emotional well-
being. When parents are on their devices, they have fewer conversations
with their children, and pay less attention to them.
In one study, 172 two-parent families with a child aged 5 years or
younger answered online questionnaires about family relationships.
Participants showed how often different devices interrupted their activities with their children. The parents rated their child’s behaviour, such as how often they got upset or how easily their feelings were hurt. They also reported on their own levels of stress and depression, the support they received from their partners, and their child’s screen media use.
In almost all cases, devices were part of parent-child interactions
during the day.Technology may serve as a refuge for parents who have to
deal with difficult child behaviour. However, it has its drawbacks.
Electronic device use means parents can’t provide meaningful
emotional support and positive feedback to their children, which causes
behaviour such as crying. But this adds to parents’ stress levels.Parents
are likely to spend more time with their technological products, and the
cycle continues.“These results showed that relationships between parent
technoference and child behaviour influence each other over time,” said
McDaniel.“Parents who have children with behavioural problems
become more stressed, which may lead to them using technology more,
which in turn may contribute to more problems with their children.”
So, it seems like the best solution to a difficult relationship between
a parent and his or her child would be to simply spend more time with each
other, and less time on their smartphones or computers.

8. What does the writer suggest parents do?( )
A. Have more face-to-face quality time with their children.
B. Keep relaxed when their children use electronic devices.

Kindness comes in many forms. That thought is behind the new
website, A Gift of Kindness, which promotes sharing stories of good
deeds, all in memory of Captain Sir, Tom Moore, who passed away at
the age of 100.
Being a hero of the pandemic, Moore decided to raise money for the
National Health Services (NHS) in England. On 6 April 2020, at the
age of 99, Moore promised to raise £1,000 by his 100th birthday. In
the course of 24 days, Moore made media appearances and became a
beloved popular figure, attracting more than 1.5 million individual
donations. Finally, Moore raised £32.79 million for the NHS.
Now, Moore’s family is making his spirit a lasting effect by
building a website called A Gift of Kindness. The idea came to Sir Tom’s
daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore while she was eating with her family
around the dinner table on a recent evening, according to The Washington Post. They were discussing how Moore’s fans continued to send warm wishes.
Since the website started on 8 December 2022, thousands of entries
have poured in.Ingram-Moore picks each one and posts some of them to
the site.“The website passes on Moore’s spirit serving as a message
board for telling stories of kindness, and sharing joy and hope with others
by recalling any small gift of kindness towards you or someone you know
and how that feels,” the website states.“This has traveled across the
Atlantic,” Ingram-Moore said in The Washington Post. The stories
emphasize that “the things we do every day have a huge impact”.
“While my father is deeply missed by me and his grandchildren,so much of our life is devoted to making sure that his spirit lives
on,”Ingram-Moore continued.“We call ourselves Team Tom.”

We’ve all done it.For many of us, it’s something that happens so
naturally every day. After working on an important project or a task for a
little while, you decide to take a break — only to pick up your
smartphone and start looking through social media, reading emails,
checking out the news and maybe getting in a quick round of “Candy
Crush Saga”.A break is supposed to be a time to relax so that you can go
back to your work feeling fresh. However, a new study finds that
cellphone use during a mental break doesn’t really allow the brain to
relax and can actually result in a poorer performance.
For the study,a group of 422 undergraduate students at Rutgers were
assigned a set of 20 word puzzles to complete.Halfway through the task, the students were separated into three groups: one group took a break and were told to use their cellphones to go shopping online, another group took a break and were instructed to shop either via their computers or using a paper circular (印刷品广告), and the third group didn’t take a break at all.
“The act of reaching for your phone between tasks, or the mid-
task, is becoming more common. We assume it’s no different from any
other break — but the phone may carry increasing levels of distraction that
make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks,” explains
Terri Kurtzberg.
