When colds or flu attacks, many people treat themselves to the comfort of warm blankets and hot chicken soup. Chicken soup has been shown to be more than just a comfort food, however.
An ancient Greek manuscript (手稿) written around 200 BCE describes how chicken soup can be used to treat respiratory (呼吸的) disorders, such as colds and flu. In the 12th century another Greek scholar wrote that chicken soup eases the symptoms people have when they have colds and flu. Modern research is showing that there is a basis for this old belief that chicken soup can help the common cold or other respiratory problems.
When a person gets a cold, the cold virus makes itself at home in one’s nose, sinuses and throat, resulting in swelling in these areas. The result is sore throat, headache, congestion (充血), coughing, etc. One experiment showed that hot chicken soup can clear the congestion that comes with a cold.
Chicken soup contains compounds (化合物) that stop the swelling which causes this problem. Scientists still don’t know why chicken soup works, but they are sure that it does. They have also found that in order to be effective, the soup must be made with vegetables. Scientists think that it may be due to the presence of some healthful elements (元素) found in plants. Perhaps the best evidence for the effectiveness of chicken soup comes from the research of one scientist who found that chicken soup is rich in a chemical widely used in cold medicines.
Thus, when your mother or grandmother tells you to eat chicken soup when you have a cold or flu, go ahead and enjoy it. You will be doing something worthwhile for your body as well as pleasing her.
4.Why are the two Greeks referred to in Paragraph 2?
A.Because Greece has a long food history.
B.Because Greeks like drinking chicken soup.
C.To prove colds and flu spread widely in Greece.
D.To show chicken soup has some medical effects.
5.How can chicken soup have a better treatment on a common cold?
A.Eat it at the right time.
B.Choose healthy chicken.
C.Add vegetables into it.
D.Take it with cold pills.
6.Which of the following may the author agree with?
A.Scientists find that chicken soup can kill cold viruses.
B.Scientists doubt if chicken soup really helps a cold.
C.It takes less money to treat a cold with chicken soup.
D.Elders tend to appreciate the effects of chicken soup.
7.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Chicken Soup Helps to Cure a Cold
B.Why Not Eat Chicken Soup Often?
C.You May Well Need Chicken Soup
D.How to Deal with a Common Cold

Jessica Westervelt, a Spanish teacher at Bethlehem High School in New York, created an activity called “House Hunters”, which was inspired by the popular television show House Hunters International, for her Spanish class about four years ago.
Similar to the show, students work in groups, pretending to be real house agents, and look for three houses in Spanish-speaking countries. She uses the activity to teach vocabulary related to home, chores, travel and vacation. She created the exercise because she wanted to incorporate her students’ interest into the curriculum (课程). At the time, a group of her students were big fans of the show.
The students look for a house for Jessica to buy to live in, or rent for vacation. She tells them what she is looking for in a home and gives them a budget. Students work in groups of three, and each student is responsible for finding one house in a Spanish-speaking country that fits the requirements.
The groups usually make a brochure describing the houses they find. Each group presents their findings to the class, while the other students take notes. The entire activity is done in Spanish, so students get to practice their writing, listening and conversation skills. They also get some cultural education when researching homes in Spanish-speaking countries. Jessica says that students planning to take the class look forward to her project.
Jessica says, “I think it’s helpful to find connections to something that they are interested in outside of school. It makes it more realistic for them and it makes that activity much more enjoyable for them.”
8.How did Jessica come up with the idea of the activity?
A.She got it from a TV program.
B.She was inspired by her students.
C.She learned it from a house agent.
D.She was taught that in high school.
9.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “incorporate” in Paragraph 2?
A.Change. B.Involve.
C.Force. D.Persuade.
10.What are the students supposed to do with the houses they find?
A.Rent the houses for their vacation.
B.Live in the houses for a while.
C.Write an introduction to the houses.
D.Choose and buy one for their teacher.
11.What do Jessica’s words in the last paragraph mean?
A.Most school activities are not enjoyable.
B.Students should be realistic about study.
C.Out-of-school activities are very important.
D.Learning should be combined with interest.

Restaurants, farmers, and food businesses are turning to chemistry and physics to solve the problem of food waste.
Experts say growing awareness of food waste and its enormous cost — both in dollars and in environmental impact — has led to an increase in efforts to mitigate it. According to ReFED, a group that studies food waste, US food waste start-ups raised $300 billion in 2021, double the amount raised in 2020, to deal with the problem.
Many companies are working on ways to help cut down on food waste. Sweden-based Innoscentia is developing a sensor that can show if meat is safe to eat by measuring the build-up of microbes (微生物) inside its container. And Ryp Labs is working on a sticker for fruits and vegetables that would produce gas to slow ripening (成熟). SAVRpak has developed a plant-based packet that can fit inside a container and take in moisture, helping keep the food inside hotter and crisper (更脆).
But the cost can be a barrier (障碍) for some companies and shoppers. Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the US, ended its deal with Apeel Sciences this year, because Kroger said shoppers were not willing to pay more for fruits with Apeel’s special covering to keep them fresh. Apeel says its special covering is made of common food additives. It says treated pears can last a few extra days while treated oranges can last for several weeks.
The science is promising, but it is only part of the solution, said Yvette Cabrera, the director of food waste for the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Most food waste happens at home,” she said. “Buying smaller amounts of food at a time could have more effect than new technology.”
“Overall as a society, we don’t value food as it should be valued,” Cabrera added.
12.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Grade. B.Track.
C.Reduce. D.Consider.
13.What problem is shown in Paragraph 4?
A.Treated food may be expensive for shoppers.
B.Some companies can’t bear the cost of food waste.
C.Shoppers looked at the freshness of food differently.
D.Some companies dislike keeping food fresh with technology.
14.According to Cabrera, what is key to cutting food waste?
A.High technology.
B.Good daily habits.
C.Learning to keep food fresh.
D.Warning companies to produce less.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Science Matters to Food Safety
B.Everyone Should Treasure Food
C.Companies Use Technology to Fight Food Waste
D.The Less Eating Out, the Better for Our Environment
If you’re like most people, you’re too busy eating pizza to stop and consider how it arrived on your kitchen counter. 16 So why don’t pizzas arrive in round cardboard boxes?
It’s mostly because the pizza industry doesn’t really care to bother the cardboard industry. 17 That’s because they can be made in one piece as well as neatly piled.
The advantage of making a round pizza box would mainly be aesthetic. But it’s not going to save space over an edged box. 18 It’s just bad pizza management.
19 In the 1800s, street sellers carried pies in portable metal containers that kept them warm. When pizza started rising in popularity in post-war America, pizzerias used a single piece of cardboard as support and then slipped the pie into a paper bag. Eventually, corrugated cardboard (瓦楞纸板) kept a fine balance between retaining heat without trapping too much moisture.
Will we ever see a radical rethink of the pizza box? Some people have tried. In 2010, Apple filed for a patent for a round pizza container with holes so moisture can escape. It’s used in the company’s food courts. Another company, World Centric, designed a compostable round box in 2018 that can be used to reheat pizza. A similar product was test-marketed by Pizza Hut in 2019. 20
A.The pizza box has changed over time.
B.Pizza wasn’t always put in square cardboard boxes.
C.Cardboard boxes are usually manufactured with edges.
D.Pizza boxes are designed to be square for the benefit of deliverymen.
E.If the boxes are piled vertically (垂直地), pizzas run the risk of rolling out of place.
F.Think it long enough, though, and you may wonder why pies usually come in square boxes.
G.Although all the designs were claimed to keep pizzas warmer and crisper, none have become widespread.

Section Ⅲ Integrated skills
Ⅰ.
Canada’s Candy Funhouse is employing a chief candy officer.
Applicants can be as young as 5 years old and must reside in North America.
They have also found that in order to be effective, the soup must be made with vegetables.
根据第一段中的created an activity called “House Hunters”, which was inspired by the popular television show House Hunters International可知,杰茜卡是从一个电视节目中受到启发,想出了这个活动。
The groups usually make a brochure describing the houses they find.
Kroger said shoppers were not willing to pay more for fruits with Apeel’s special covering to keep them fresh可知,消费者不愿意多花钱购买Apeel Sciences公司提供的用特殊包装保鲜的水果。
Think it long enough, though与上文之间为转折关系,you may wonder why pies usually come in square boxes引出下文。
When pizza started rising in popularity ...slipped the pie into a paper bag.

When colds or flu attacks, many people treat themselves to the
comfort of warm blankets and hot chicken soup. Chicken soup has been
shown to be more than just a comfort food, however.
An ancient Greek manuscript (手稿) written around 200 BCE
describes how chicken soup can be used to treat respiratory (呼吸的)
disorders, such as colds and flu. In the 12th century another Greek
scholar wrote that chicken soup eases the symptoms people have when
they have colds and flu. Modern research is showing that there is a basis
for this old belief that chicken soup can help the common cold or other
respiratory problems.
When a person gets a cold, the cold virus makes itself at home in
one’s nose, sinuses and throat, resulting in swelling in these areas. The
result is sore throat, headache, congestion (充血), coughing, etc.
One experiment showed that hot chicken soup can clear the congestion that
comes with a cold.
Chicken soup contains compounds (化合物) that stop the swelling
which causes this problem. Scientists still don’t know why chicken soup
works, but they are sure that it does. They have also found that in order to
be effective, the soup must be made with vegetables. Scientists think that
it may be due to the presence of some healthful elements (元素) found
in plants. Perhaps the best evidence for the effectiveness of chicken soup
comes from the research of one scientist who found that chicken soup is
rich in a chemical widely used in cold medicines.
Thus, when your mother or grandmother tells you to eat chicken
soup when you have a cold or flu, go ahead and enjoy it. You will be
doing something worthwhile for your body as well as pleasing her.

Jessica Westervelt, a Spanish teacher at Bethlehem High School in
New York, created an activity called “House Hunters”, which was
inspired by the popular television show House Hunters International, for
her Spanish class about four years ago.
Similar to the show, students work in groups, pretending to be real
house agents, and look for three houses in Spanish-speaking countries.
She uses the activity to teach vocabulary related to home, chores, travel
and vacation. She created the exercise because she wanted to incorporate
her students’ interest into the curriculum (课程). At the time, a group
of her students were big fans of the show.
The students look for a house for Jessica to buy to live in, or rent for
vacation. She tells them what she is looking for in a home and gives them a
budget. Students work in groups of three, and each student is responsible
for finding one house in a Spanish-speaking country that fits the
requirements.
The groups usually make a brochure describing the houses they find.
Each group presents their findings to the class, while the other students
take notes. The entire activity is done in Spanish, so students get to
practice their writing, listening and conversation skills. They also get
some cultural education when researching homes in Spanish-speaking
countries. Jessica says that students planning to take the class look forward
to her project.
Jessica says, “I think it’s helpful to find connections to something
that they are interested in outside of school. It makes it more realistic for
them and it makes that activity much more enjoyable for them.”

Restaurants, farmers, and food businesses are turning to chemistry
and physics to solve the problem of food waste.
Experts say growing awareness of food waste and its enormous
cost — both in dollars and in environmental impact — has led to an
increase in efforts to mitigate it. According to ReFED, a group that
studies food waste, US food waste start-ups raised $300 billion in 2021,
double the amount raised in 2020, to deal with the problem.
Many companies are working on ways to help cut down on food
waste. Sweden-based Innoscentia is developing a sensor that can show if
meat is safe to eat by measuring the build-up of microbes (微生物)
inside its container. And Ryp Labs is working on a sticker for fruits and
vegetables that would produce gas to slow ripening (成熟). SAVRpak
has developed a plant-based packet that can fit inside a container and take
in moisture, helping keep the food inside hotter and crisper (更脆).
But the cost can be a barrier (障碍) for some companies and
shoppers. Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the US, ended its
deal with Apeel Sciences this year, because Kroger said shoppers were
not willing to pay more for fruits with Apeel’s special covering to keep
them fresh. Apeel says its special covering is made of common food
additives. It says treated pears can last a few extra days while treated
oranges can last for several weeks.
The science is promising, but it is only part of the solution, said
Yvette Cabrera, the director of food waste for the Natural Resources
Defense Council. “Most food waste happens at home,” she said.
“Buying smaller amounts of food at a time could have more effect than
new technology.”
“Overall as a society, we don’t value food as it should be
valued,” Cabrera added.

13. What problem is shown in Paragraph 4?
A. Treated food may be expensive for shoppers.
B. Some companies can’t bear the cost of food waste.
C. Shoppers looked at the freshness of food differently.
D. Some companies dislike keeping food fresh with technology.
Kroger said shoppers were

If you’re like most people, you’re too busy eating pizza to stop and
consider how it arrived on your kitchen counter. 16 So why don’t
pizzas arrive in round cardboard boxes?
It’s mostly because the pizza industry doesn’t really care to bother the
cardboard industry. 17 That’s because they can be made in one piece
as well as neatly piled.
The advantage of making a round pizza box would mainly be
aesthetic. But it’s not going to save space over an edged box. 18 It’s
just bad pizza management.
19 In the 1800s, street sellers carried pies in portable metal
containers that kept them warm. When pizza started rising in popularity in
post-war America, pizzerias used a single piece of cardboard as support
and then slipped the pie into a paper bag. Eventually, corrugated
cardboard (瓦楞纸板) kept a fine balance between retaining heat
without trapping too much moisture.
Will we ever see a radical rethink of the pizza box? Some people
have tried. In 2010, Apple filed for a patent for a round pizza container
with holes so moisture can escape. It’s used in the company’s food courts.
Another company, World Centric, designed a compostable round box in
2018 that can be used to reheat pizza. A similar product was test-marketed
by Pizza Hut in 2019. 20
A. The pizza box has changed over time.
B. Pizza wasn’t always put in square cardboard boxes.
C. Cardboard boxes are usually manufactured with edges.
D. Pizza boxes are designed to be square for the benefit of deliverymen.
E. If the boxes are piled vertically (垂直地), pizzas run the risk of
rolling out of place.
F. Think it long enough, though, and you may wonder why pies usually
come in square boxes.
G. Although all the designs were claimed to keep pizzas warmer and
crisper, none have become widespread.
