A
Drinking coffee as soon as one wakes up from a night’s sleep greatly affects metabolism and blood sugar responses.Scientists published this in the British Journal of Nutrition.
In the study, the UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take part in three different overnight experiments. In the first two scenes, participants were given a sugary drink upon waking first from a normal night’s sleep, and then again after a greatly disturbed night’s sleep. In the third, their sleep was similar, but they were given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before having the sugary drink.
Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary drinking each experiment. Results showed that one night of disturbed sleep did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast increased the blood sugar response by around 50 per cent.
By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers found that our bodies’ ability to break down our food healthily is completely improved.Examining the effects of broken sleep and morning coffee through a range of different metabolic markers, researchers found that, while one night of poor sleep had a limited effect on metabolism, drinking coffee before breakfast could have a negative effect on blood sugar control.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee — the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee is.This study is important and has far-reaching health influences, and it indeed shakes some coffee drinkers.Up to now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control, so we have a long way to go,” said Professor James Bette, co-director of the Centre for Nutrition at the University of Bath.

Mum filled our house with beautiful furnishings (家具), one of which was a pair of crystal (水晶) table lamps. One of my chores was to clean the lamps. I didn’t mind because when they were cleaned, rainbows covered the highly cleaned wood floor when the sun shone through them.
I asked her how much they cost. “Don’t you worry about it,” she replied.“Just know that they are expensive and can never be replaced.”
Each sat on its own lamp table in the aisle (走廊) between the living room and the kitchen. It was unavoidable that the combination of my five-year-old brother Stephen and those lamps would lead to a tragedy (悲剧). They were a challenge to him. He had to prove he could pass dangerously close without knocking them off their tables.
I knew I’d be held responsible if Stephen harmed those lamps, so I tried to stop him from getting me into trouble. On one occasion when he was trying to prove to me how skilled he was, Stephen’s luck finally ran out.
Trying to explain to Mum that I hadn’t broken one of the lamps and that I’d tried to get Stephen to stop was useless. I had no idea how much it cost, but decided to save my birthday money to replace the lamp.
One day, Mum and I went shopping at Newberry’s. To my surprise, there was the precious lamp high on a shelf, only priced at twenty-five dollars! I had more than enough to afford it! I told Mum that I was going to buy it, but she said, “No.” At my request, she told me, “The lamp isn’t irreplaceable because it was the only lamp in existence. My mother gave those lamps to me as a wedding gift. She used to clean floors for a living and it took everything she earned and so much love for her to buy them for me. Nothing replaces the love she has for me, nor the love I have from you wanting to spend all the money you have to buy me the same lamp.”
5.Why was the author willing to clean the lamps?
A.The lamps were her mother’s favourite furnishings.
B.The sunlight shining through the lamps pleased her.
C.The cleaned lamps reminded her of her grandmother.
D.The lamps were the most expensive furnishings in her house.
6.What tragedy happened one day?
A.One of the lamps was broken by Stephen.
B.The author lost all the money for the new lamp.
C.The author knocked a lamp off when doing housework.
D.Stephen hurt himself when picking up the broken lamps.
7.Why did the author’s mother prevent her from buying the lamp at Newberry’s?
A.It had less artistic value.
B.It lacked special meaning.
C.It was priced much too high.
D.It had totally gone out of fashion.
8.What might the author learn from her mother’s words?
A.Love cannot live where there is no trust.
B.A lamp lights others and consumes itself.
C.Lamps are replaceable but love is priceless.
D.If a thing is worth doing it is worth doing well.

“Flashlight, water, sandwiches and spare clothes,” Harry’s mum called out. “Everything’s there,” Harry smiled as he tapped his backpack.
“Stay safe and take care of your friends too,” Harry’s mum called after him as he left the house.
“Yes, I will. Don’t worry,” Harry said.
Harry and his friends met at the port by the sea, with boats lined up in front of them. Excited, all four of them settled themselves down, and Tom and Lucy started up the engine. They were going to make the most out of their vacation.
The boat set off. Harry handed out sandwiches to everyone while they waited to see the island they planned their trip to. An hour went by when a distant piece of land appeared in front of them. Tom announced that they were very near their destination.
Not long after, they hit land. The island was pretty. Flowers in different shapes and sizes bloomed (开花), tall trees with fruits lined up, birds sang and butterflies flew past them.
Lucy took in a breath of air and said,“So beautiful!”
As they walked across the island, it started to get hot. The sun had already reached the top of their heads. They came across a small river and settled down beside it. Tom splashed (泼洒) water on his face. It was very cool.
“What is that?” Harry shouted in surprise, pointing in a direction in front of them. The others looked around to see what he had noticed.
“Doesn’t it look like a cave?” Jane said, her eyes shining bright.
Always ready for new adventures, they quickly ran over to the cave’s opening. The cave looked large, its opening wide enough to fit five people at once. But it looked like no one had been to it in ages.
“Do we have to go inside?” Tom asked. “What if there’s something scary in it?”
“Don’t be a mood spoiler (破坏者), Tom,” Jane pushed him to go inside. All of them walked after Harry.
The cave was larger than they thought at first. Harry pulled out the flashlight from his backpack and turned it on. A winding passage led out from one corner of the cave.
“Let’s see how far it goes,” Harry said.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

The countryside around Nanjing has been famous for its ducks for centuries; its countless waterways make the area perfect for raising waterbirds.A local history book from the late Qing Dynasty praised salted duck in particular , saying it was without equal.Traditionally, duck is considered to have cooling properties , so it is appropriate for the hot summer months.[7]Nowadays, people eat salted duck all year round and it is estimated that tens of thousands of ducks are consumed every day in Nanjing! It definitely hit the spot when I tried it, and it has become one of my personal favourites.

8 December, Cantonese dim sum
[8]In Guangzhou, morning tea is such an essential part of the daily routine that “Have you had your tea?” has become the local version of “Good morning.”Though teahouses have been common in China since the Tang Dynasty, the Cantonese innovation of the mid-19th century was to serve tea together with a variety of light dishes, or dim sum.The concept took off, and today Guangzhou’s restaurants stimulate customers’ appetite with over a thousand offerings, each more delicate and delicious than the last.
[9]The Cantonese do not hurry over their breakfasts, as I found when I visited a restaurant in Guangzhou’s old city centre this morning. The emphasis is rather on conversation about business, family or pleasure, and locals can spend hours together chatting, drinking tea and working their way through the menu. From beef balls to rice noodle rolls, there are various dishes that have been baked, boiled, steamed or fried.A single visit is not enough to appreciate everything, and I have a long list of dim sum I still need to try.

Drinking coffee as soon as one wakes up from a night’s sleep greatly
affects metabolism and blood sugar responses.Scientists published this in
the British Journal of Nutrition.
In the study, the UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take
part in three different overnight experiments. In the first two scenes,
participants were given a sugary drink upon waking first from a normal
night’s sleep, and then again after a greatly disturbed night’s sleep. In the
third, their sleep was similar, but they were given a strong black coffee
30 minutes before having the sugary drink.
Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary
drinking each experiment. Results showed that one night of disturbed sleep
did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar responses at breakfast when
compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee
consumed before breakfast increased the blood sugar response by around
50 per cent.
By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers
found that our bodies’ ability to break down our food healthily is
completely improved.Examining the effects of broken sleep and morning
coffee through a range of different metabolic markers, researchers found
that, while one night of poor sleep had a limited effect on metabolism,
drinking coffee before breakfast could have a negative effect on blood
sugar control.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and,
before doing anything else, drink coffee — the more tired we feel, the
stronger the coffee is.This study is important and has far-reaching health
influences, and it indeed shakes some coffee drinkers.Up to now we have
had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in
particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control, so we have a long
way to go,” said Professor James Bette, co-director of the Centre for
Nutrition at the University of Bath.

Mum filled our house with beautiful furnishings (家具), one of
which was a pair of crystal (水晶) table lamps. One of my chores was
to clean the lamps. I didn’t mind because when they were cleaned,
rainbows covered the highly cleaned wood floor when the sun shone
through them.
I asked her how much they cost. “Don’t you worry about it,” she
replied.“Just know that they are expensive and can never be replaced.”
Each sat on its own lamp table in the aisle (走廊) between the
living room and the kitchen. It was unavoidable that the combination of my
five-year-old brother Stephen and those lamps would lead to a tragedy
They were a challenge to him. He had to prove he could pass
dangerously close without knocking them off their tables.
I knew I’d be held responsible if Stephen harmed those lamps, so I
tried to stop him from getting me into trouble. On one occasion when he
was trying to prove to me how skilled he was, Stephen’s luck finally ran
out.
Trying to explain to Mum that I hadn’t broken one of the lamps and
that I’d tried to get Stephen to stop was useless. I had no idea how much it
cost, but decided to save my birthday money to replace the lamp.
One day, Mum and I went shopping at Newberry’s. To my
surprise, there was the precious lamp high on a shelf, only priced at
twenty-five dollars! I had more than enough to afford it! I told Mum
that I was going to buy it, but she said, “No.” At my request, she
told me, “The lamp isn’t irreplaceable because it was the only lamp in
existence. My mother gave those lamps to me as a wedding gift. She used
to clean floors for a living and it took everything she earned and so much
love for her to buy them for me. Nothing replaces the love she has for
me, nor the love I have from you wanting to spend all the money you
have to buy me the same lamp.”

“Flashlight, water, sandwiches and spare clothes,” Harry’s
mum called out. “Everything’s there,” Harry smiled as he tapped his
backpack.
“Stay safe and take care of your friends too,” Harry’s mum called
after him as he left the house.
“Yes, I will. Don’t worry,” Harry said.
Harry and his friends met at the port by the sea, with boats lined up
in front of them. Excited, all four of them settled themselves down, and
Tom and Lucy started up the engine. They were going to make the most
out of their vacation.
The boat set off. Harry handed out sandwiches to everyone while they
waited to see the island they planned their trip to. An hour went by when a
distant piece of land appeared in front of them. Tom announced that they
were very near their destination.
Not long after, they hit land. The island was pretty. Flowers in
different shapes and sizes bloomed (开花), tall trees with fruits lined
up, birds sang and butterflies flew past them.
Lucy took in a breath of air and said,“So beautiful!”
As they walked across the island, it started to get hot. The sun had
already reached the top of their heads. They came across a small river and
settled down beside it. Tom splashed (泼洒) water on his face. It was
very cool.
“What is that?” Harry shouted in surprise, pointing in a
direction in front of them. The others looked around to see what he had
noticed.
“Doesn’t it look like a cave?” Jane said, her eyes shining bright.
Always ready for new adventures, they quickly ran over to the
cave’s opening. The cave looked large, its opening wide enough to fit
five people at once. But it looked like no one had been to it in ages.
“Do we have to go inside?” Tom asked. “What if there’s
something scary in it?”
“Don’t be a mood spoiler (破坏者), Tom,” Jane pushed him
to go inside. All of them walked after Harry.
The cave was larger than they thought at first. Harry pulled out the
flashlight from his backpack and turned it on. A winding passage led out
from one corner of the cave.
“Let’s see how far it goes,” Harry said.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
They stepped into the passage one after the other.

Suddenly, Jane cried out as she stood holding her toe.

They stepped into the passage one after the other. They silently walked
along the passage, sometimes whispering to each other. All of a sudden,
Harry stopped walking. They bumped into each other after him. Lucy
asked Harry what was wrong from the end of the line. Harry answered
disappointedly that the cave had just suddenly ended, and that he thought
they could at least have found some ancient treasure. Tom laughed at him
and suggested going back. Then they turned around and walked back.
Suddenly, Jane cried out as she stood holding her toe.All of them
rushed over to check if she was fine. Lucy flashed the light in the direction
of her foot. Jane’s toe looked okay. But what caught their attention was a
small ancient box, lying right beside her feet. They opened it and found
many gold coins in it. They’d actually found a treasure box!Hand in
hand, the four friends walked towards the sun shining through the cave
opening, with bright smiles on their faces.
