I'm having a wonderful time in South Africa! I settled in very quickly at the apartment and did volunteer work on the boat the day after I arrived.
The area suits me well, right on the sea, with lovely views of the ocean from the top windows of the apartment. Everyone is really friendly. People really make me feel at home.
I also got to go in the cage, the best thing I've ever done in my life! The sharks are so beautiful. We also saw a Southern Right Whale near our boat as we were on our way back to the shore. It was totally splendid. I thought I was going to cry!
As volunteers in a sea conservation project, we went out to sea and I helped get visitors in or out of their wet suits and generally helped out on the boat. We were usually back on shore by around 1:00 PM, but the day could go on longer if it took a while to get sharks. However, a local guide for us usually worked very well and we got a shark within half an hour of getting to our spot.
At the end of the day I helped clean the boat with a lovely guy named Mandla,who taught me a lot.It was very rewarding(有回报的)when the visitors enjoyed the sharks and the weather was good. Some days could be quite hard when we had to struggle with the rain, wind and poor water visibility(能见度).Luckily,that didn't happen too often.
The amount I have learned since I got here is unbelievable-not only more about the sharks, but also about working out at sea, which I knew nothing about two weeks ago!

Emperor penguins(帝企鹅),the largest penguin species, are black and white, with yellow ears and breasts. The male is responsible for incubating (孵化)the eggs for about two months.
Normally about 8 percent of the world's emperor penguin population breeds(繁殖)at Halley Bay. According to a study, almost no emperor penguins have been seen at Halley Bay since 2016. The study found that in 2016 and2017, there was no breeding activity at Halley Bay. Last year, there were few pairs. The number of breeding pairs, male and female penguins which raise their chicks together, has gone up quickly at a nearby breeding ground called Dawson Lambton. Yet, the study's writer said that number was not the same as the number of penguins usually seen at Halley Bay. “That means the penguins have not completely disappeared, but it doesn't explain the total number lost at Halley Bay." Trathan said, head of conservation biology at the British Antarctic Survey,
Scientists say that storms, winds and warmer weather break apart the “fast ice” ( sea ice that is connected to land where emperor penguins stay to breed),which leads to the sharp drop in numbers. The pairs incubate their eggs and care for their chicks-one each pair-on ice. After breeding and then feeding the chicks for a few months until they can swim, the penguins move to open sea.
Trathan said a super strong EL Nino melted(融化)more sea ice than usual.Winds and waves hit the ice shelf, or fast ice. That made the breeding home a dangerous place to raise chicks. “The breeding colony(群落)failure is a warning of things that might become important in the future. If, one day, there is no place for emperor penguins to breed.they will disappear from the world completely," Trathan said.
