　　When Kevin Day was a child， he could hardly speak due to a speech impediment （口吃）.Yet he was extraordinarily fluent in the language of music.Kevin says， “Music was sort of my way of self-expression when I couldn’t communicate what I felt with words.”
Now in his mid-20s， Mr Day is breaking racial and age barriers in classical music.His work has already been performed at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox， Massachusetts， the Rachmaninov Concert Hall in Moscow， and the Carnegie Hall in New York.To reach these peaks， the young black composer has had to overcome tough challenges.
“He is driven， but he is so uplifted and comforted by music that I don’t think it’s a choice for him，” says Cynthia Johnston Turner， dean of the music faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo， Ontario.During her previous post at the University of Georgia， she selected Mr Day for a master’s program.“He has a lot of resilience （复原力）， but let’s not ignore the fact that the systems are piled up against him.”
Mr Day’s work is influenced by life experiences as much as by musical notes.When he was around 10 years old， his family’s struggles deepened.Both his parents were unable to find a job.Sometimes there was no electricity or water in the house.In the end， the family lost their house and car.“I don’t make a big deal out of this stuff，” Mr Day notes.“I’m always looking forward and try not to look back， not even for reflection.”

　　Iron rust （铁锈） is generally considered troublesome， but German researchers have now transformed it into a water-cleaning superhero they name “smart rust”.This innovative particle is not only magnetic but can also pull in numerous pollutants like oil， tiny plastic particles， and even the herbicide glyphosate （除草剂草甘膦）.
“Our ‘smart rust’ is cheap， non-toxic and recyclable，” says Dr Marcus Halik， the project’s principal investigator from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universit t Erlangen-Nürnberg， in a statement.“And we have demonstrated its use for all kinds of pollutants， showing the potential for this technique to improve water treatment dramatically.”
At the heart of “smart rust” are iron oxide nanoparticles （纳米粒）， which are attracted to magnets but won’t stick to each other， insuring they remain separated.To improve their pollution-grabbing potential， the researchers coat these particles with phosphonic acid molecules （膦酸分子）， turning the particles into tiny pollutant sponges （海绵）.
“After we add a layer of the molecules to the iron oxide cores， they look like hairs sticking out of these particles’ surfaces，” says Dr Halik.
By adjusting the other end of these acid molecules， they can customize the particles to pull in various pollutants.The team’s earlier versions were successful in clearing crude oil from Mediterranean sea water and glyphosate from pond water.Additionally， these particles proved capable of removing tiny plastic particles from labs and river water samples.
But the team wasn’t stopping there.Lukas Müller， a graduate student associated with the project， explored whether this rust could tackle smaller pollutants， specifically hormones.Estrogen （雌激素）， which is hormone naturally found in humans and livestock， often finds its way into water sources and can disrupt the ecosystem， even in the slightest amounts.“I started with the most common estrogen， estradiol， and then four other derivatives that share similar molecular structures，” says Müller.Müller’s approach involved crafting “pockets” on the smart rust’s surface that attract and lock in the estradiol.Though these pockets are too small to be seen， advanced instruments are helping Müller confirm their existence and effectiveness.

　　Cleanliness may be next to godliness， but a new study suggests it could have an unexpected downside： A few minutes of floor cleaning indoors with a fresh-scented （气味清新的） cleaning product can generate as many airborne particles （微粒） as vehicles on a busy city street， because these products contain chemicals that react with ozone （臭氧） in the air to form harmful small particles.
“I was absolutely amazed that floor cleaning produced potentially harmful particles at similar rates to those generated by traffic on a busy street，” says Nicola Carslaw of the University of York who was not involved with the study.“There is a lot of particle formation during these cleaning events， even under conditions that we would consider very normal.”
Previous studies found cleaning products can generate such pollution.But not all of these experiments were realistic or detailed.The new study was designed to reveal， minute by minute， what happens with airborne reactions during a typical floor cleaning.Researchers brought their lab instruments into a room with an air volume of 50 cubic meters.In the morning， they cleaned the floor for 12 to 14 minutes with a terpene-based （含有萜烯成分的） cleaner.Then， they used the most advanced instruments to monitor the reactions over the next 90 minutes.“This is the first study that really looked at the entire chemical process under realistic indoor conditions，” says researcher Philip Stevens.
What about opening windows？ It can also be a double-edged sword， researchers say.Ventilation （通风） removes particles， but it can also bring in more dangerous ozone from outdoors.
Keeping ozone levels below one part per billion — either by reducing ventilation or using activated carbon air filters （活性炭空气过滤器） — would help， the researchers say.So would cleaning in the morning or evening， when ozone levels tend to be lower， and avoiding products with terpenes.“Portable air filters can also reduce the concentration of particles inside rooms，” says another researcher Brandon Boor.
“The larger problem，” Boor says， “is the lack of rules for the design and operation of buildings — and the use of various common chemicals inside them — with respect to air quality.We need to pay closer attention to what’s going on in indoor environments.”
