All the students were just learning to speak English. Sitting in Room 142, Thorpe had a chance to meet students from all over the world. She said the class included 22 foreign students. They had the common struggles of teenagers everywhere, but they also had the extra difficulty of being in a new country and trying to understand a new culture and a new language. The foreign students spoke 14 different languages. Many of the students were the only one in the room who spoke a certain language. At first, most of the students were unable to make friends because they couldn’t communicate with others. So they were struggling to overcome loneliness. What these students were hungry for was to learn how to speak, to feel they were accepted at their new high school, and to feel that they belonged to a community. As time went by, the students succeeded in dealing with their difficulties. In her book, Thorpe wrote about some of the problems many of these students faced.
【知识点】方法和策略、说明文
【答案】25.cause 26.solution 27.reasonable 28.methods
【听力材料】M: There are many ways to solve personal problems.
First of all, if you are feeling unhappy about something, face it. Try to state the problem in a few words, so that you will know exactly what you are against. Then see if you can “put your finger” on the cause of your unhappiness. Secondly, try direct attack. In many cases, we only “think” there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack. So try to be as positive rather than escape from the problem. Make sure you have a reasonable goal. Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations. Sometimes it is necessary to change either the methods or the goal. It is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

Actually, it’s a decision made by my father as a business man. He has been to many places, but he said that he had never seen big plains with horses and goats running on it. That’s why he chose inner Mongolia. Maybe this trip will be quite different, but our original intention is to experience life.
Nope. This time we are not in a hurry, so we decided to take a train. It will take us a long time to get there, but I think it will be quite amazing. You see, from Guangdong to inner Mongolia, that means we are going to travel from the south of China to the north of China. I will be able to see the scenery all the way.
No, we have family trips one or two years a time. The last time I went on a family trip was two years ago. It mainly depends on my father. You know he is always quite busy with his business. If he has time during summer or winter holidays, we will be able to go on a trip. I love family trips because my family members are all happy during the trips.
When would you like to watch the new movie
How long will Tom stay in Inner Mongolia
What does Tom’s father do
Why does Tom’s family decide to take a train
When was the last time Tom went on a family trip

【听力材料】With the spread of computers, the Internet has been playing a more and more important role in our daily lives. In recent years, the number of net users has been multiplying. Take China for example: there are now millions of net users in the country, a great jump from the 620,000 users recorded in 1997, when the computer industry was just beginning its rapid growth. The number had grown to 79.5 million by the end of 2003, and about 11.5 million new users were recorded in the last half of 2006. In fact, China had more Internet users than Japan by the end of 2002, jumping to second in the world after the United States. It’s estimated China had the largest number of Internet users in the world by the end of 2007. Still, the current number is only 6.2 percent of the country’s total population, and the majority of Internet users are people between the ages of 18 and 30. So the number of users in China will continue to increase.

I’d like to tell you about some of the ships I’ve discovered. Well, there’s nothing quite like finding the first old ship — it is 300 years old. It was just lying at the bottom of the sea, so it wasn’t difficult to find. Most are covered in sand and rocks — but this one wasn’t. I’m actually a teacher, not a full-time diver — I dive in my free time but I often get to them before the professional divers, because I have good up-to-date equipment. Another thing that helps is talking to fishermen. I’ve even written a book about some of their experiences.
At the moment, I’m looking for the gold from a ship called The Seabird. I was astonished when I first saw it. It was a well-built ship and it was coming from Australia on a winter night in 1859. Everything was going fine until the ship reached the English coast, when it crashed into some rocks in a very strong storm and sank to the bottom of the sea.
Well, as diving is a dangerous hobby, it’s not a good idea to teach yourself. I’d recommend anyone interested to do what I did. There are some excellent diving clubs like the one I joined, which run courses for beginners. It is best to do one of these ahead of time before you go on a diving holiday.

Skiing skiing is Mary’s favorite sport, but she has only skied for four times in her whole life. Last year, her father promised to take her skiing if she did well in her exam. After she got an A, her father brought her to Seoul, south Korea. It was the first time for Mary to see some real snow. After arriving, they checked in at a hotel. Their room overlooked one of the ski slopes and they could see people skiing until ten PM. They couldn't wait to try themselves. The next day they had their first skiing lesson. They rented skis, suits, boots and skis and went outside on the snow. Wearing skis for the first time made Mary feel very strange. Suddenly, she found herself, couldn’t even walk. Their instructor took them on a gentle slope and showed some basic skills. To be honest, the first lesson was not successful and she kept on falling down. However, the next day she definitely improved and she managed to do a few longer runs. She felt pleased with herself and the instructor congratulated her, so she felt great. Although it was very cold, she spent most of the time skiing. It was the most wonderful time of her life.
