Have you ever read stories by the Danish (丹麦的) writer Andersen This year is his 220th birthday! Teens invited editors (编辑) from the UK, Poland and the US to share their own stories about reading Andersen’s works.
Jacorb: Andersen’s stories were a big part of my childhood because my mom read them to me before bed. My favourites were The Little Match Girl and The Storks. The Little Match Girl shows how people don’t care about poor children. The image (形象) of the girl walking in the snow without shoes still makes me sad. Every New Year’s Eve, I remember to be thankful for what I have. The Storks teaches us that bad people must pay for their actions.
Patric: I read Andersen’s stories when I was little. I was surprised to see how dark some of them were. For example, in The Red Shoes, a girl is cursed (诅咒) to keep dancing until she dies. And I thought the story The Emperor’s New Clothes was just a silly story, but now I see this kind of thing in real life.
David: In the UK, we often read Andersen’s stories in primary school. My mom first read The Ugly Duckling to me. Later in school, we talked about its message of growing up and becoming special. Kids love The Little Mermaid. The story is not only a story about love and beauty, but also shows the growth of women.

Mangroves (红树林) are very special forests that grow along the coastlines (海岸线). They look like tall green walls rising from the sea. Though they might seem like just trees, they do many important jobs for nature.
First, mangroves play a very important part. They protect coasts from strong winds and big floods, keeping homes and beaches safe. Their roots (根) are like little cities for small animals. Small fish swim around them and birds build their homes there. What’s more, these trees are great cleaners. They filter out (过滤掉) bad things in the seawater, making the sea cleaner and healthier. In a word, mangroves are not only beautiful but also very useful. We should protect them well.
But now, mangrove forests are in big trouble. People cut them down to build houses or start farms. Human activities produce (产生) lots of rubbish and wastewater, which is also bad for them. Many mangrove forests are getting smaller and many small animals in the sea are losing their homes. It’s time for us to take action.
The good news is that more and more people are waking up to their importance. Volunteers plant new mangrove trees, and scientists study how to protect them better. We can help, too. For example, we should stop throwing the rubbish into the sea and support projects that protect mangroves. After all, saving mangroves means keeping nature healthy and it’s good for all living things.
