“Look at this,” Nancy said to her mom as she entered the house. “There’s a five-day art camp this summer.” She held a bright red piece of paper up to her mother.
“Would you like to attend, Nancy ” Mom asked.
“Probably not,” Nancy replied. “None of my friends are going.”
Mom hugged Nancy. She knew Nancy had a hard time jumping into something with unfamiliar faces around. “Maybe next year,” Mom said.
“Maybe,” Nancy sighed (叹气), putting the red paper in her pocket. “I’m going to draw the Westons’ pine (松树) tree. I’ll be out front.”
Nancy sat down and drew the tall pine with her pencil. She drew so carefully that she didn’t notice the sound of the lawn mower (剪草机) a few houses down. That’s why she jumped with surprise when Mr. Weston said, “You’ve done a great job showing how strong that tree is on the paper.”
“Thanks,” Nancy smiled and stood up. She cut the grass for him every week.
“I have planted pine trees before, when I worked for the park,” Mr. Weston said. “You have to spread out the roots near the surface so the tree can get enough water and grow tall. If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. I learned that roots grow out, not down.”
“That makes sense,” Nancy thought. She never noticed how far a tree’s roots reached out. It made Nancy think about the art camp and her own roots. She suddenly realized she had to start reaching out.

Qinqiang Opera, which was from pop Chinese songs and dances in Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, is one of China’s oldest operas. It started during the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-207 BC), when farmers and soldiers used it for fun and comfort. The opera shows the daily lives, hard work, and feelings of ancient Chinese people. Its songs and dances also teach about Chinese language, culture and history.
However, in the 1990s, pop and Western music became very popular, and fewer people cared about Qinqiang Opera. Young people especially liked the new music more. Many actors had to leave during this time. Some opera groups closed, and people nearly forgot the old performance skills. To make money, artists did other jobs like selling clothes, starting small businesses or acting in movies. But a few never gave up-they kept practicing.
In 2006, things changed when the government named Qinqiang Opera “an important cultural treasure”. This helped people focus on it again. Schools started teaching about it, and theaters mixed traditional opera with modern styles to attract young people. Ten years ago, most audiences (观众) were old, but now many young people watch and love Qinqiang Opera. More young actors are joining too, and schools train them to keep the art alive (有活力)。
The return of Qinqiang Opera not only brings young people back to Chinese culture, but also shows old arts can stay meaningful even in today’s fast-changing world.

A.In the 1990s. B.In the Qin Dynasty. C.After 2006. D.About ten years ago.
10.What can we infer (推断) about Qinqiang Opera actors in the 1990s

A.Interest. B.Check. C.Hurt. D.Decide.

A.Qinqiang Opera and Modern Music.
B.Why Opera Groups Closed in the 1990s.
C.The History and Return of Qinqiang Opera.
D.The Importance of Chinese Culture Today.
Some places on Earth are very hot and dry, with almost no rain in these areas, finding water is a big problem. Scientists in Chile are working on a special way to collect water—they call it “fog (雾) to water.”
In the desert city of Alto Hospicio, Chile, it hardly ever rains. People there depend on trucks to bring them water. But the mountains around the city often have fog. Scientists thought, “Maybe we can use this fog to get water!”
Fog is like a low cloud full of very small water drops. To catch the water, scientists put metal nets (金属网) between tall poles in the mountains. When fog moves through the nets, the drops get together and grow bigger. Then the water falls into tanks (水箱) below.
The scientists tested this idea. Each week, they collect about 300,000 liters (升) of water and send it to poor areas in the city. They need 17,000 square meters of nets to do this. Another 110 square meters of nets can collect enough water to keep parks green.
Now, the team is looking for the best places in Chile to use fog collecting. They ask questions like: “How much fog does this area have ” “Is the fog thick enough ” “How does the wind blow ” They hope to make a “fog map” to show where this special way works best.
This could help people in dry areas live better lives. Who knew fog could be so useful
13.Why do people in Alto Hospicio need to collect water from tog
A.Because they enjoy using fog. B.Because trucks are too expensive.
C.Because it rains too much there. D.Because there is little rainfall there.
14.What do scientists use to catch fog
A.Plastic bottles. B.Metal nets. C.Tall trees. D.Large tanks.
15.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) toward fog collecting
A.Sad. B.Angry. C.Happy. D.upset.
16.What is the main purpose (目的) of the passage
A.To explain how fog collecting works. B.To discuss why deserts have no rain.
C.To compare different trucks to get water. D.To encourage scientists to make clouds.
