Before she turned 17, she had never traveled outside. None of the kids in her family had ever been to a school or a hospital. As she got older, she felt that she needed to get away from this uncomfortable situation. Luckily, Westover's older brother taught her to read. With hard work, Westover went to college, and later got a PhD(博士学位)in History at Cambridge University.
Education changed her, her life, her way of thinking and even her luck. After reading the book, I come to feel the deepest thanks for my own family, and the education I got. Education allows girls like Westover to fly like birds toward their own goals. It allows us to get a different view, find new experiences, better understand others and explore the wider world. Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for directions.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have the similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the Earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It is still a mystery. Scientists have not found the answer yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for directions, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

In December 2020, the “quiet carriage (车厢)” service was first introduced on some trains of the Beijing- Shanghai high - speed railway and the Chengdu- Chongqing high - speed railway. Up to June 2024, this service has covered the Beijing- Guangzhou, Beijing- Harbin, Shanghai- Kunming and other high - speed railways.
The “quiet carriages” have silent videos and announcements made at a low volume(音量). Doors at both ends of the carriage are closed to reduce noise from outside. During the trip, passengers must wear earphones or turn off loudspeakers when using electronic devices (电子设备). They also need to leave their seats to make or answer calls, and their phones should be set to silent or vibrate mode (振动模式). For those travelling with children, they must take care of them and keep them quiet.
Mr. Li, a Chengdu local, said, “I make at least one round trip a week between Chengdu and Chongqing for work. I sometimes need to focus on my work or get some rest during the hour- long trip. The' quiet carriage' is a good choice for me.”

Dear editor,
I think everyone needs friendship. I have a friend. I met Peter in primary school. We found ourselves sitting next to each other. At first we were just friends at school, but as we grew older,we started doing other things together. We would spend time at each other's houses at the weekend, and our parents took us away on holiday together. We were like brothers almost. But then we went to different junior high schools and we didn't see each other very often. But then one evening when I joined a new football club,I found Peter in the club. So we started practising together twice a week, and later playing in the same team. In fact,we built a great goal﹣scoring partnership, probably because we knew each other so well. He made me understand that persistence is victory. We learn from each other, help each other and grow each other. I think we'll still be close friends in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
