There is a teenager girl named Nancy. She never helps out around the house. Last year her mother was on vacation for a week and left her at home. When her mother came home from vacation, she could not find a clean dish or a clean shirt.
③Schools are important in teaching students to work hard. Primary and middle schools should have hard-working spirit lessons every week. To our joy, in some schools, each class has a field to plant their favourite vegetables. For example, No. 38 Middle School in Hefei, has a 500-square-metre farm on the top of the classroom building. The school asks each class to grow and pick vegetables there.
④Parents should also encourage children to learn to do chores at home. Teenagers should learn one or two life skills every year. The next morning, Tammy got up early on her own because she wanted to help her mother with breakfast. She made orange juice and even prepared bread so that her mother could sleep for a few more minutes. When Justin Tong was a child, other children felt sorry for him. His parents always had him doing lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish. But when he grew up, he was the best among his childhood (孩童时期) friends and lived a happy and healthy life.
This is the result of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who worked hard in childhood could have a rich and happy future. “Children who worked in the home in childhood got more abilities and came to feel they were important members of the family,” said Daniel Brown. He made the study. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Brown's study followed these children to get great information. They made the study about the children at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the scientists collected the children's childhood-activity scores (分数). The children got high scores for housework, hard work in school, and ability to solve problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child improve abilities. They also help him or her understand that people must work together and work towards common goals. The great people know how to do this.
Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live great in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”
( )27. What do we know about Justin Tong
A. He enjoyed a happy life. B. He never did housework.
C. He hardly collected rubbish. D. He felt sorry for the other children.
( )28. Who may succeed in the future according to Paragraph 2
A. Children who enjoy happy and rich lives.
B. Children who work in the home in childhood.
C. Children who take part in Daniel Brown's study.
D. Children who feel good about people around them.
( )29. How did Brown follow the children in his study
A. By giving housework and praising them.
B. By giving goals and showing love.
C. By solving problems and teaching them.
D. By asking and collecting scores.
( )30. What is the text mainly about
A. Every child should help work at home.
B. A child should do more work.
C. Working can help solve many problems.
D. Working is helpful for children's lives.
