Where to Eat Chinese Food on Christmas in Charm City
It doesn’t feel like Christmas without a plate of Chinese dish. Here are a few of Baltimore’s Chinese food restaurants that are open on Christmas Day.
Red Pepper Sichuan Bistro: Head to this Towson hangout to try Sichuan dishes that include salty, sour, sweet, and even floral flavors (花香). Besides spicy hot pots, the menu lists offerings like steamed chicken, stir-fried Shanghai cabbage, and sweet-and-sour fish, which support food delivery service.
Location: 11 Allegheny Ave. Towson.
Grace Garden: This Odenton treasure is all about typical Chinese style. Look out for family-style servings of pocket tofu, fish noodles, and tea-smoked duck with perfectly crisp (酥脆的) skin. The sugary fried rolls are also a must to end the meal on a sweet note.
Location: 1690 Annapolis Rd., Odenton.
Sonny Lee’ s Hunan Taste: In addition to the delicious dishes, the comforting atmosphere of this beautifully decorated restaurant has made it the most popular spot in the community for more than a decade. The service is always first-rate, and maybe you’re lucky enough to meet Sonny himself, who is making his rounds greeting guests or carving Peking duck at your table.
Location: 750 Main St. Suite 104A, Reisterstown.
Peter Chang Baltimore: Located near the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus, this restaurant is a destination for Chinese cakes, bubble tea, and a lengthy list of other vegan, seafood, and noodle dishes. Sit comfortably at the table and place a takeout order, but whatever you do, do not forget the sweet course.

John Agnello, a 15-year-old boy, was out fishing with his mom near the Lakefront Marina in Grosse Pointe Woods Tuesday afternoon when he saw that a car just got flying in the air. It was about 15 yards away and dropped into the water.
Without hesitation, John said, he and a man jumped into the water to help the woman inside the car. “The car was at like 65% water, so then we had to get her out of the window because the door wasn’t opening,” he said. He and the man pulled the woman to safety, who lost consciousness (意识). John’s mom, Beth Agnello, called 911 at once. John wondered whether there was anybody else inside the car, so he jumped back into the water. Thankfully, the car was empty.
“The only part that kind of scared me was when I was under the water inside the car, feeling around in there,” John said. “It was kind of like I got trapped in the car. But everything was fine.”
Beth Agnello said she is so proud of her son who is being called a hero. “I’m hoping that he isn’t proud of being a hero and considers some work options for his future,” Beth Agnello said.
John Agnello said he doesn’t know if he’ll be a first responder in the future, but he does know he loves helping others. “I think that’s just how my family raised me just to take action to help,” John Agnello said.
St. Clair Shores police are investigating what caused the car to go into the water. Police said the woman was taken to the hospital to be examined.

A. Brave and helpful. B. Active and patient.

The “cold shock reaction” doesn’t seem like a good thing. When you suddenly jump into ice water, breathing heavily in the cold air, your heartbeat jumps, and your body begins to shake uncontrollably. Yet the practice of regularly bathing in cold water is becoming fashionable. The movement’s biggest promoter is probably Wim Hof, a Dutch athlete and health expert. Called “The Iceman”, Mr. Hof has stood in a container filled with ice for nearly two hours and has swum under ice for 66 metres—a world record.
His website says that practice burns fat, strengthens the immune system, balances hormones, improves sleep and lifts the mood. And cold does speed up a body’s metabolism. It also reduces the painful inflammation (炎症), which is why cold packs are placed on injuries.
But does a cold-water bath provide broad benefits A study in 2014 of 12 persons of Mr. Hof’s method found that they experienced fewer flu-like symptoms (症状) than a control group.
The largest study of what Mr. Hof and his followers call “power in the cold shower” was conducted in 2015. Researchers asked about 3,000 volunteers to either shower normally or end with a cold bath lasting 30,60 or 90 seconds. A month later, it showed that in any case there was no difference in the number of days for which members of the two groups felt ill.
Studies have shown cold baths to raise levels of dopamine (多巴胺) which is linked to pleasure. A study in 2023 of 33 adults given a five-minute cold bath and a brain scan found that they “felt more active, attentive, proud and inspired and less anxious and nervous”.
That finding, at least, seems to explain the movement’s popularity. For those seeking a break from comfortable modern life, cold water can be inviting.
28. What does Mr. Hof’s website say about the cold-water bath
A. It fails to take effect. B. It improves overall wellness.
C. It puts a person in a bad mood. D. It is suitable for young people.
29. How was the 2015 study performed about a cold bath
A. Through different dates. B. Through the amount of water.
C. Through various time lengths. D. Through selecting testing locations.
30. What was found about the 33 grown-ups
A. They were confirmed to be ill. B. They experienced a long cold bath.
C. They got positive mental influence. D. They were requested to take medicine.
31. What is the writer’s attitude towards the cold-water bath at the end of the text
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Worried. D. Supportive.
D
More than 1,000 meters below the surface of the oceans, everything is in darkness. For animals living there, vision is unrelated; acoustic (声音的) signals, instead, are how they find their way, communicate and search for food.
That way of life has come under threat from decades of increasing human noise. A leading cause is shipping. By one research, shipping-noise productions double every 11.5 years.
With about 90% of traded goods traveling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in shipping itself is not tenable. Efforts to make ships more effective, and therefore less polluting, are likely to reduce noise. But experts say those measures will not do enough to bring back quiet. That is why a range of technologies are being developed, which could allow humans and other animals to co-exist in the ocean.
Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). The noise produced by the propeller can travel thousands of meters underwater without losing strength, messing up the movements of whales, which use these frequencies (频率) to communicate.
One solution, being developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), puts flexible polymers (聚合物) into the metal propeller, allowing its tips to bend. “This movement prevents bubbles (气泡) from forming and therefore reduces the noise,” says Rajeev Jaiman of UBC. Based on experiments, the design could reduce noise by 20 decibels.
But shipping noise does not come only from the propeller. About 20% comes from the body of the ship, as engines work and the ship will let out continuous loud noise. At low speeds, this percentage rises.
MARIN researchers have experimented with a bubble screen positioned around the outside of the ship. These make a skirt of air bubbles around the back of the ship, where most machinery sits, preventing noise from spreading.
32. What does the underlined word “tenable” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Difficult. B. Workable. C. Time-saving. D. Cost-friendly.
33. How are whales influenced by ships
A. Their habitat is polluted by ships.
B. Ships influence how far whales’ eyes can see.
C. Ships with giant bodies block whales’ swimming passage.
D. Noise from propellers messes up whales’ communication tools.
34. What is the key to reducing the noise from the propeller
A. Metal polymers. B. Increase of bubbles.
C. Bent tips of the propeller. D. Flexible shapes of the propeller.
35. What is the suitable title for the text
A. Structure of Ships Leads to Great Noise
B. Human Activities Affect Sea Animals Greatly
C. Experiments Are Conducted to Test Ship Performance
D. Noise-reducing Tech Makes Ships Affect Ocean Life Less

It was Christmas Eve in the village of Hillspring. Mary Jepson was getting her six small children ready for bed. She helped each child hang a little old stocking. She felt her heart was full of sorrow because the bad weather had caused the situation to be even worse than before.
In October, Mary had received a letter from her sisters living in Idaho, who knew well about Mary’s situation. They wanted to know what they could send to the family for Christmas. Mary hadn’t written back right away. She didn’t want to tell them how poor the family really was. Finally in November, seeing that things were not going to get any better, she wrote a letter. She had requested only necessities. The week before Christmas, Mary’s husband Leland daily went to the post office for a package from Idaho. Each day he would receive the same disappointing answer.
Now, Mary looked up at the sad little old stockings still hanging empty, feeling that her heart was hanging just as empty. Outside the snowstorm was getting worse.
George worked as a postman. On this particular Christmas Eve, after George traveled through the snowstorm to deliver the last of the mail to the communities, darkness had already fallen. He went home. Placing the Christmas tree in the living room, he watched the children joyfully gathering around to decorate it.
Then he received a call from his office, saying that some large boxes had arrived from Idaho for the Jepson family. Thinking of the struggling Jepson family and the packages waiting at the post office, he decided to send the boxes to the Jepsons’ little farmhouse that very night. So he set out.
He struggled to find his way through the blinding snowstorm. With the snow deepening, his truck moved more and more slowly.

【原文】W: I went to a pop music concert last Saturday. It lasted for three hours. I did enjoy the concert and pop music made me feel young and energetic. Of course, apart from pop music, I also preferred other kinds of music, like country music and rock and roll. When Jack, my favorite rock music singer was singing, it began to rain. We were all wet but the concert still continued and nobody left. Later, the organizers offered some raincoats and umbrellas. My friend and I were able to share one umbrella. Although the weather was bad, the music was amazing. The bands performed so well that we didn’t want to leave when it ended at 10 p.m. I will never forget their excellent performance. It’s a great pleasure to enjoy the music concert in a rain.

C. Worried. D. Supportive.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. C 31.

【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35. D

词句猜测题。根据第三段“With about 90% of traded goods traveling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in shipping itself is not…. Efforts to make ships more effective, and therefore less polluting, are likely to reduce noise. (大约90%的贸易货物通过海运运输,通过减少航运本身来使海洋安静下来是不……的。努力使船舶更有效率,从而减少污染,可能会降低噪音。)”可知,大约90%的贸易货物通过海运运输,可推理出想通过减少航运来让海洋安静下来是不现实的,也就是不可行的。故选B项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). The noise produced by the propeller can travel thousands of meters underwater without losing strength, messing up the movements of whales, which use these frequencies(频率) to communicate. (船只产生的大部分水下噪音来自螺旋桨。螺旋桨产生的噪音可以在水下传播数千米而不减弱,干扰了鲸鱼的活动,鲸鱼利用这些频率进行交流。)”可知,螺旋桨产生的噪音干扰了鲸鱼利用频率进行交流的工具。故选D项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“One solution, being developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), puts flexible polymers (聚合物) into the metal propeller, allowing its tips to bend. “This movement prevents bubbles (气泡) from forming and therefore reduces the noise,” says Rajeev Jaiman of UBC.
